About the journal

Current Issues in Tourism

Current Issues in Tourism encourages in-depth discussion and critique of key questions within the subject. It offers a readable format for extended peer-reviewed papers, commentaries, letters and reviews, all designed to spark off further reader response and debate. It contains both applied and theoretical work that addresses tourism inquiry, method and practice. Lively and rigorous, it welcomes contributions from the broad gamut of subjects which make up the stuff of tourism studies.

Current Issues in Tourism is designed to be accessible to both new and experienced researchers and practitioners on a global basis. The principal aims of the journal are to: encourage the full disciplinary and interdisciplinary range of approaches which are available to the study of tourism; bring together researchers from different subject backgrounds for interdisciplinary and postdisciplinary debate; develop the theoretical base on which the study of tourism is built; provide a basis for the development of critical approaches to the study of tourism; disseminate new approaches, concepts, frameworks, methods, models and practices which may be developed in the study of tourism; promote new research; assist in the creation of new networks of researchers; and encourage young researchers.

In addition to general papers Current Issues in Tourism features three other sections - CIT Letters, CIT Reviews and Current Issues in Method and Practice. To find out more about these sections, including how to submit material, please click here

The journal aims for a rapid turnaround of submissions and encourages short commentaries and rejoinders. In addition to normal submissions of approximately 5-7,000 words the journal also welcomes extended peer-reviewed papers of between 15,000 and 25,000 words in length on a single topic that combine detailed literature reviews with substantive empirical research and/or policy analysis in the ‘CIT Reviews’ section. There are also Reports, Rejoinders and Commentary (on both current and past papers) of up to 3000 words, plus book review articles of up to 1500 words. Contributions to Current Issues in Method and Practice should normally be no more than 5,000 words. Occasional special symposia issues will also be produced focusing on a special topic. In the ‘CIT Letters’ section, the journal is keen to encourage shorter pieces focussing on issues of the moment or early notice of research findings. All papers are peer-reviewed. We also welcome supplementary material in the form of video, audio, photographs and additional information about data that is not otherwise included in the paper.

Instructions to Authors

Manuscript preparation

1. General guidelines

  • Please use British spelling (e.g. colour, organise) and punctuation. Use single quotation marks with double within if needed.
  • A typical article (this excludes submissions to the Reviews, Letters, Current Issues in Method and Practice sections of the journal) will normally not exceed 7,000 words. Papers that greatly exceed this will be critically reviewed with respect to length. However, we also accept extended papers of the order of 15,000 – 25,000 words. For such extended papers on a single topic that combine detailed literature reviews with substantive empirical research and/or policy analysis the editors welcome contact from authors before submission.  Authors should include a word count with their manuscript.
  • N.B.  Authors who wish to submit to either the Reviews or Letters section of the journal should first consult the additional submission guidelines for those sections.  These can be found here .
  • Authors should prepare and upload at least two files. The first should be the manuscript with all information identifying the author(s) removed (name, affiliation, contact details and acknowledgements) to allow it to be sent anonymously to referees. This blinded file should be uploaded with “Main Document” selected as the file designation. The second file should be a full title page; when uploading this file authors should select “Title Page: File not for Review” as the file designation. Acknowledgments may be included on the title page. Tables should appear on individual pages at the end of your main manuscript file. Figures should be uploaded separate to your text, as TIFF files.
  • Manuscripts should be compiled in the following order: abstract; keywords; main text; appendices (as appropriate); references; table(s) with caption(s) (on individual pages); figure caption(s) (as a list).
  • Abstracts of 200 words are required for all papers submitted.
  • Each paper should have 5 or 6 keywords .
  • All the authors of a paper should include their full names, affiliations, postal addresses, telephone and fax numbers and email addresses on the title page of the manuscript. One author should be identified as the Corresponding Author.
  • For all manuscripts non-discriminatory language is mandatory. Sexist or racist terms should not be used.
  • Authors must adhere to SI units . Units are not italicised.
  • When using a word which is or is asserted to be a proprietary term or trade mark, authors must use the symbol ® or TM.

Search engine optimization (SEO) is a means of making your article more visible to anyone who might be looking for it. Please consult our guidance here.

2. Style guidelines

3. Figures

  • It is in the author's interest to provide the highest quality figure format possible. Please be sure that all imported scanned material is scanned at the appropriate resolution: 1200 dpi for line art, 600 dpi for grayscale and 300 dpi for colour.
  • Figures must be saved separate to text. Please do not embed figures in the paper file.
  • Files should be saved as TIFF (tagged image file format).
  • All figures must be numbered in the order in which they appear in the paper (e.g. figure 1, figure 2). In multi-part figures, each part should be labelled (e.g. figure 1(a), figure 1(b)).
  • Figure captions must be saved separately, as part of the file containing the complete text of the paper, and numbered correspondingly.
  • The filename for a graphic should be descriptive of the graphic, e.g. Figure1, Figure2a.

4. Colour

Authors of accepted papers who propose publishing figures in colour in the print version should consult Taylor & Francis at proof stage to agree a financial contribution to colour reproduction costs. Figures that appear in black-and-white in the print edition of the Journal will appear in colour in the online edition, assuming colour originals are supplied.

5. Reproduction of copyright material

Contributors are required to secure permission for the reproduction of any figure, table or extensive extract (more than fifty words) from the text of a source that is copyrighted or owned by a party other than Taylor & Francis or the contributor. This applies to direct reproduction as well as ‘derivative reproduction’, where the contributor has created a new figure or table that derives substantially from a copyrighted source. Authors are themselves responsible for the payment of any permission fees required by the copyright owner. Copies of permission letters should be sent with the manuscript upon submission to the Editor(s).

Further advice and information, including a template letter for requesting permissions, is available on our Author Services site at: http://journalauthors.tandf.co.uk/preparation/permission.asp

6. Supplementary online material

Authors are welcome to submit animations, movie files, sound files or any additional information for online publication.

Manuscript Submission

All submissions should be made online at the Current Issues in Tourism  ScholarOne Manuscripts  site, with the exception of book reviews (see below for further details). New users should first create an account. Once logged on to the site, submissions should be made via the Author Centre. Online user guides and access to a helpdesk are available on this website.

Manuscripts should be submitted in Word format wherever possible. These files will be automatically converted into a PDF file for the review process. LaTeX files should be converted to PDF prior to submission because Manuscript Central is not able to convert LaTeX files into PDFs directly. This journal does not accept Microsoft Word 2007 documents. Please use Word's "Save As" option to save your document as an older (.doc) file type.

If you are submitting a book review for publication in the journal, please email the manuscript to the Book Reviews Editor, John Jenkins, at the following address John.Jenkins@scu.edu.au . All other guidelines regarding submission apply.

Copyright and authors’ rights

It is a condition of publication that authors vest or license copyright in their articles, including abstracts, in Taylor & Francis Ltd. This enables us to ensure full copyright protection and to disseminate the article, and the Journal, to the widest possible readership in print and electronic formats as appropriate. Authors may, of course, use the material elsewhere after publication providing that prior permission is obtained from Taylor & Francis Ltd.

Exceptions are made for authors of Crown or US Government employees whose policies require that copyright cannot be transferred to other parties.  We ask that a signed statement to this effect is submitted when returning proofs for accepted papers.

Reprints

Corresponding authors will receive free online access to their article through our website ( www.tandfonline.com/RCIT ) and a complimentary copy of the issue containing their article. Reprints of articles published in this journal can be purchased through Rightslink® when proofs are received. If you have any queries, please contact our reprints department at reprints@tandf.co.uk .
