Instructions to Authors

Manuscripts must be written in English, and must be original and not currently under review elsewhere. If an article is scheduled for publication elsewhere, the author should clearly indicate this at the time of submission. The editors suggest 10,000–20,000 words (including references) as the preferable length. CJIP advocates strong referencing standards and asks authors to pay particular attention to the accuracy and correct presentation of all references (see Note Format below).

All submissions are to be made via the online submission system. Please see here for further information on online submission. If you have any problems with online submission, please send your manuscript files by email.

Manuscripts must be accompanied by an abstract of 200- 300 words and a biographical note of 50-100 words introducing the contributor’s education background, current affiliations, research interests, recent publications and full contact details (email, phone, fax and postal). It is preferred that the authors acknowledge no more than 2 institutions which have financially supported the research of their submissions.

PEER REVIEW

All submissions will be judged by the editors as appropriate for peer review or being rejected directly within 2 weeks. Two reviewers will be invited for those papers subject to anonymous peer review. These papers will be evaluated by the peer-reviewers on the basis of their creativity, quality of scholarship, and contribution to advancing the understanding of the international relations. Submissions will be processed as swiftly as possible and the editors aim to communicate a first decision to the contributors within 2 months.

      LICENCE AND PERMISSIONS

It is a condition of publication that authors grant an exclusive licence to Oxford Journals or the society of ownership. This ensures that any requests from third parties to reproduce articles are handled efficiently and consistently, and will also allow the article to be as widely disseminated as possible. In assigning copyright, authors may use their own material in other publications, provided that the journal is acknowledged as the original place of publication, and Oxford Journals is notified in writing and in advance.

Upon receipt of accepted manuscripts at Oxford Journals, authors will be invited to complete an online copyright licence form. If the form has not been received by the time we receive author corrections, publication of your manuscript may be delayed.

Manuscripts submitted for publication must be original, previously unpublished, and not under consideration for publication elsewhere. If previously published figures, tables, or parts of a text are to be included, the copyright-holder’s permission must have been obtained prior to submission. For more information on how to obtain permissions, please consult Rights and Permissions.

      OPEN ACCESS OPTION FOR AUTHORS

The Chinese Journal of International Politics authors have the option to publish their paper under the
Oxford Open initiative; whereby, for a charge, their paper will be made freely available online immediately upon publication. After your manuscript is accepted the corresponding author will be required to accept a mandatory licence to publish agreement. As part of the licensing process you will be asked to indicate whether or not you wish to pay for open access. If you do not select the open access option, your paper will be published with standard subscription-based access and you will not be charged.

Oxford Open articles are published under Creative Commons licences. Authors publishing in The Chinese Journal of International Politics can use the following Creative Common licence for their articles:

      PREPARATION OF THE MANUSCRIPT

      General

Papers must be clearly written in English. If you would like additional help with the quality of the written English in your manuscripts, including grammar, spelling, and language usage, visit Oxford Journals Language Services. For review articles and book reviews, direct and full citations are encouraged whenever the indirect and partial citations may cause misunderstanding and confusions about the original arguments.

      Figures

Figures should be supplied in an electronic format at a suitable size for printing with the following resolutions: 600 dots per inch (dpi) for line drawings and combinations; 300 dpi for greyscale and colour figures. Colour figures must be supplied in CMYK not RGB colours. Please ensure that the prepared electronic image files are at a legible size and are of a high quality for publication.

      PROOFS

All manuscripts will undergo some editorial modification, so it is important for you to check proofs carefully. PDF page proofs will be sent via e-mail to the corresponding author for checking. To avoid delays in publication, proofs should be checked and returned within 48 hours. Corrections should be returned by annotated PDF, e-mail or fax. Extensive changes to the text may be charged to the author.

      POST-PRODUCTION CORRECTIONS

Corrections will be made if the publication record is seriously affected by the academic accuracy of published information, and the correction will be published as a formal notice (erratum) in a subsequent issue both online and in print.

Advance Access constitutes definitive publication and is not subject to informal changes. If a very significant error (as outlined above) is discovered after publication of an Advance Access article, which necessitates correction to the online version, a new version will be published online with a footnote to outline the changes made. Both versions will be available online.

Authors' corrections to Supplementary Data are made only in exceptional circumstances (for example major errors that compromise the conclusion of the study). Because the Supplementary Data is part of the original paper and hence the published record, the information cannot be updated if new data have become available or interpretations have changed.

      OFFPRINTS

The corresponding authors for all articles will automatically receive a free link to the full text of their article. Corresponding authors may also purchase offprints using the Oxford Journals Author Services site.

      CONFLICT OF INTEREST

CJIP’s policy requires that each author reveal any financial interests or connections, direct or indirect, or other situations that might raise the question of bias in the work reported or the conclusions, implications, or opinions stated - including pertinent commercial or other sources of funding for the individual author(s) or for the associated department(s) or organization(s), personal relationships, or direct academic competition. When considering whether you should declare a conflicting interest or connection please consider carrying out a conflict of interest test: Is there any arrangement that would embarrass you or any of your co-authors if it was to emerge after publication and you had not declared it?
