Instructions to Authors

General Nature of the Editorial Process

Manuscripts submitted to the American Economic Journal: Applied Economics are handled by an Editor, a Coeditor, and a staff located in Pittsburgh, using an Internet-based manuscript management software system. Papers are submitted online electronically, processed by the Pittsburgh office staff, and then distributed by the Editor to the Coeditor or to himself/herself to oversee the refereeing process and to make a publication decision. Papers are assigned on the basis of field of expertise, combined with a variety of other considerations including equalization of work-load and conflict-of-interest rules. Once assigned, papers are handled by the designated Coeditor throughout the decision process.

Peer Review, Confidentiality, and Editorial Handling

There are several rules that affect assignment of manuscripts. Coeditors are generally not assigned manuscripts authored by an individual at his or her institution or a current student. Papers falling into these categories are handled by the Editor or by a different Coeditor with appropriate procedures for confidentiality of refereeing. Papers submitted by a Coeditor are handled by the Editor and papers submitted by the Editor are handled by a Coeditor, again employing appropriate confidentiality procedures.

Manuscripts are reviewed in a single-blind fashion. The name of the author is revealed to the referee(s), while the referee(s) remain anonymous to authors.

Disclosure Policy

When submitting papers for peer review, all authors must provide Disclosure Statements, identifying potential conflicts of interest. If authors have nothing to disclose, they are obligated to submit a statement explicity stating this. Disclosure Statements should also disclose whether IRB approval was obtained for the project, and if not, state the reason(s). For published papers, a brief summary of potential conflicts of interest should appear in the acknowledgements footnote. A more detailed account will be available on the journal's website, posted with the paper. The complete Dislosure Policy can be found at http://www.aeaweb.org/aea_journals/AEA_Disclosure_Policy.pdf.

Data Availability Policy

It is the policy of the American Economic Journal: Applied Economics to publish papers only if the data used in the analysis are clearly and precisely documented and are readily available to any researcher for purposes of replication. Details of the computations sufficient to permit replication must be provided. The Editor should be notified at the time of submission if the data used in a paper are proprietary, or if, for some other reason, the above requirements cannot be met. The full data availability policy can be viewed at http://www.aeaweb.org/aej/data.php.

Policy on Papers Previously Submitted to the AER

The American Economic Journals will consider papers previously reviewed by the American Economic Review. Authors of manuscripts previously reviewed by the AER may request that, subject to the referees' agreement, the full correspondence files of the AER referees (including cover letters as well as referees' reports) be shared with the editors of the AEJ to which the author is applying (AEJ: Applied Economics, AEJ: Economic Policy, AEJ: Macroeconomics, or AEJ: Microeconomics), who will have the discretion to make a decision based on these reports or to request additional reports.

If you wish to take advantage of this option answer YES to the question on the online submission form asking "Has your paper previously been submitted to the AER, and if yes, would you like to request the materials from your AER review be forwarded to the AEJ editors?" If you DO NOT wish the AEJ editors to see the file of a paper previously submitted to the AER, answer NO to the question. When such a request has been made, the AEJ staff will contact each referee to obtain his or her permission, and if it is granted, will forward all referee correspondence to the AEJ editor.

If an author chooses to ask the AEJ editor to use the AER referee reports and correspondence, it is not necessary to change the paper in response to the AER referee comments at this stage. However, if you do change it, also separately upload the original version of the paper that was sent to the AER and a letter detailing the changes you made and choose the file designation 'Misc. (for review).'

Special Announcement to Authors:
Effective July 1, 2012

Beginning July 1, 2012, all submissions to AEA journals, including revisions of previously submitted papers, must be accompanied by a Disclosure Statement. This is applicable even when the authors have no relevant interests to disclose. Authors will need to provide a separate Disclosure Statement for each coauthor at the time of submission. Submissions that do not include the statements will be considered incomplete and will not be reviewed. Please see the complete Disclosure Policy.

Submission Policy

Any paper submitted to the AEJ: Applied Economics should NOT be under consideration for publication at another journal. All submitted papers must also represent original work, and should fully reference and describe all prior work on the same subject and compare the submitted paper to that work.

In an effort to prevent plagiarism, the American Economic Association subscribes to CrossCheck to screen its submissions. CrossCheck has a "database of current and archival scholarly literature" and uses the Ithenticate tool to "compare authored work against the content in the database and highlight matching or similar text for further editorial review." Submission to AEA journals implies permission of the Association to check the submission electronically for plagiarism, using the CrossCheck system.

Submission fees must be paid by credit card at the time of submission. We are unable to review manuscripts that have been previously rejected by the AEJ: Applied Economics. The AEJ: Applied Economics reserves the right to reject papers without review.

Effective July 1, 2012: All submissions, including revisions, must be accompanied by a Disclosure Statement. This is applicable even when the authors have no relevant interests to disclose. Authors will need to provide a separate Disclosure Statement for each coauthor at the time of submission. The statements will also need to disclose whether IRB approval was obtained for the project, and if not, state the reason(s). Submissions that do not include the statements will be considered incomplete and will not be reviewed. Please upload disclosure statements in Step 5 of the submission process for original submissions and Step 6 for revisions.

Source information for tables, figures, maps, photos, and other artwork should be mentioned in the captions. For material that is copyrighted, you must obtain a letter of permission from the copyright holder. In the US, Canada, EU countries, and Japan, copyright is automatically granted for photos to the owner(s) of the photos.

Submission Instructions

Read guidelines thoroughly.  Papers will not be reviewed if they do not follow our submission guidelines.

Papers should be submitted electronically to http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/aej-applied.  Upon receipt of the paper, a confirmation e-mail will be sent electronically.

  1. All manuscripts should be submitted in PDF format with 1.5 line spacing and should not exceed 50 pages. This limit includes reference lists, figures, and tables.

  2. Please use 12-point Times New Roman or similar font. Margins should be 1.5 inches on the top, bottom, and sides.

  3. Your manuscript should include a title page with each author's name and contact information.

  5. Include an abstract of 100 or fewer words.

  6. Any requests for an exemption from our Data Availability Policy should be made in your cover letter when your paper is first submitted.

  7. Fully reference all prior work on the same subject and compare your paper to that work. In addition to referencing the work of other scholars, you should be certain to cite your own work when applicable.

Please note:

Data Availability Policy

It is the policy of the American Economic Journal to publish papers only if the data used in the analysis are clearly and precisely documented and are readily available to any researcher for purposes of replication. Authors of accepted papers that contain empirical work, simulations, or experimental work must provide to the American Economic Journal, prior to publication, the data, programs, and other details of the computations sufficient to permit replication. (For AEJ: Economic Policy, authors of accepted papers must also provide tables containing empirical results referred to but not presented in the paper.) These will be posted on the AEJ Web site. The Editor should be notified at the time of submission if the data used in a paper are proprietary or if, for some other reason, the requirements above cannot be met.

As soon as possible after acceptance, authors are expected to send their data, programs, and sufficient details to permit replication, in electronic form, to the AEJ office. Please send the files via e-mail to Annette (aejaccept@aeapubs.org), indicating the manuscript number. Questions regarding any aspect of this policy should be forwarded to the Editor.

Our policies differ somewhat for econometric and simulation papers, and for experimental papers.

For econometric and simulation papers, the minimum requirement should include the data set(s) and programs used to run the final models, plus a description of how previous intermediate data sets and programs were employed to create the final data set(s). Authors are invited to submit these intermediate data files and programs as an option; if they are not provided, authors must fully cooperate with investigators seeking to conduct a replication who request them. The data files and programs can be provided in any format using any statistical package or software. Authors must provide a Readme PDF file listing all included files and  documenting the purpose and format of each file provided, as well as instructing a user on how replication can be conducted.

If a request for an exemption based on proprietary data is made, authors should inform the editors if the data can be accessed or obtained in some other way by independent researchers for purposes of replication. Authors are also asked to provide information on how the proprietary data can be obtained by others in their Readme PDF file. A copy of the programs used to create the final results is still required.

For experimental papers, we have a more detailed policy, including requirements for submitted papers as well as accepted papers. We normally expect authors of experimental articles to supply the following supplementary materials (any exceptions to this policy should be requested at the time of submission):

1. The original instructions. These should be summarized as part of the discussion of experimental design in the submitted manuscript, and also provided in full as an appendix at the time of submission. The instructions should be presented in a way that, together with the design summary, conveys the protocol clearly enough that the design could be replicated by a reasonably skilled experimentalist. For example, if different instructions were used for different sessions, the correspondence should be indicated.

2. Information about subject eligibility or selection, such as exclusions based on past participation in experiments, college major, etc. This should be summarized as part of the discussion of experimental design in the submitted manuscript.

3. Any computer programs, configuration files, or scripts used to run the experiment and/or to analyze the data. These should be summarized as appropriate in the submitted manuscript and provided in full as an appendix when the final version of a manuscript is sent in. (Data summaries, intermediate results, and advice about how to use the programs are welcome, but not required.)

4. The raw data from the experiment. These should be summarized as appropriate in the submitted manuscript and provided in full as an appendix when the final version of an accepted manuscript is sent in, with sufficient explanation to make it possible to use the submitted computer programs to replicate the data analysis.

Other information, such as applications to Institutional Review Boards, consent forms, or Web signup and disclosure forms, is not required or expected. If it desired to make this kind of information public, it should be posted on laboratory or authors' Web sites.

If the paper is accepted by the AEJ, the appendices containing instructions, the computer programs, configuration files, or scripts used to run the experiment and/or analyze the data, and the raw data will normally be archived on the AEJ Web site when the paper appears.

Instructions for Sending Data, Appendices, Additional Materials, Final Manuscripts, and Figures

Please label your files before e-mailing them to Annette (aejaccept@aeapubs.org).  Each file name should clearly indicate if the file is a “manuscript,” “data,” “appendix,” “figures,” or “additional materials.” Each file should contain the manuscript number (which should also be included in the subject line of the e-mail).

  • It is preferable to send each “group” of files (if there is more than one file for data, figures, additional materials, etc.) as a .zip file (for example, 20030002_data.zip or 20030002_addmaterials.zip).
  • Please use underscores instead of spaces when creating file names.
  • Appendices and manuscripts may be sent in PDF format (for example, 20030002_appendix.pdf or 2002002_finalpaper.pdf).
  • All datasets must include a PDF “Read me” file (clearly labeled, for example, ReadMe.pdf) containing a list of all files included and guiding a user on the types of files and how to use them to do replication.  The PDF “Read Me” file should be included in the .zip file containing the dataset.
  • For datasets that are too large to send by e-mail, we make available the option of uploading large files to our FTP server. Please contact Annette (aejaccept@aeapubs.org) for instructions on accessing the FTP server.
