About the journal

Africa Spectrum was first published in 1966 by the GIGA Institute of African Affairs (IAA) in Hamburg. It is an inter-disciplinary journal dedicated to scientific exchange between the continents. The journal focuses on socially relevant issues related to political, economic and socio-cultural problems and events in Africa as well as on Africa's role within the international system.

For more than four decades Africa Spectrum has regularly provided – three times per year – profound analyses of current issues in political, social and economic life; culture; and development in sub-Saharan Africa. On the web page http://www.giga-hamburg.de/afrika-spectrum interested readers will find abstracts and the table of contents of former issues of the journal.

Africa Spectrum is the leading German academic journal exclusively devoted to this continent and is part of the GIGA Journal Family.

Since 2003 the journal has collaborated closely with the African Studies Association in Germany (Vereinigung für Afrikawissenschaften in Deutschland, VAD). Members of the VAD contribute in various ways to the success of the journal, for example, as authors or as referees in the peer-review process. A subscription to the journal is included in the VAD membership fee. Nevertheless, the independence of the journal and its editorial policy is guaranteed. As of 2009 the Dag Hammarskjöld Foundation is cooperating with the GIGA/IAA with the aim of further internationalising the journal and expanding coverage of topics related to the United Nations.

Africa Spectrum is published in English only. The journal also accepts French- and German-language articles during the review process; however, accepted articles will have to be translated into English before publication (either by the author or through the editorial department). In addition, Africa Spectrum, unlike some other Open Access publications, does not charge its authors any fee.

Articles covering various topics are regularly included, but the journal also publishes special issues devoted to specific subjects. The editing of such a special issue by a guest editor is possible by arrangement. The journal also includes historical studies that illuminate current events on the continent. In addition, it carries debates, short contributions and book reviews.

Instructions to Authors

1. Language
Africa Spectrum is published in English only. Africa Spectrum also accepts French- and German-language articles during the review process; however, accepted articles will have to be translated into English before publication (either by the author or through the editorial department).

2. Biographical note and abstract
All authors are asked to provide a biographical note, which should state the following: current occupation, scientific discipline, research fields and projects (maximum 100 words). Please keep in mind that all contributions are to be headed by an abstract of at most 150 words. Please add three to four keywords. If possible, please translate the abstract and keywords into German.

3. Format
The submission file should not exceed 8,500 words (Research Articles), 4,500 words (Analyses and Reports, etc.) or 1,000 words (Book Reviews), respectively. Please refrain from formatting! Eliminate all editing, formatting and automatic numbering. Send the text as a plain Word file. Please use a standard font (e.g., Times New Roman, 12 pt.). Bold or underlined text is not necessary. Do not use justification and syllabication in your text. Organise titles and subtitles using a clear hierarchy; please do not use more than three levels of headlines. Refer only to sections, not to specific pages. Include footnotes for digression or further argumentation sparingly. Use British English throughout the text, and please be sure to write clearly and use correct punctuation; we recommend that non-native authors have their contributions proofread.

4. References
References should follow the Harvard Citation Style:

  • References cited in the text: Author/s publication date (and if needed): pp. For example: (Maihold 1996: 62-91; Johnson and Smith 2008; Cusack, Fitzgerald, and Hu 2001: 356). If the source has more than three authors, name only the first: (Dombois et al. 1997); if different sources published in the same year by the same author are quoted, distinguish them with an additional minuscule (2000a, 2000b). Do not use ibidem or ibid.
  • References at the end of the text: All quoted authors and sources are to be listed in an alphabetical bibliography at the end of the text. Please check for completeness! For titles in non-European languages please provide translation in brackets.
  • Books: Last name, First name, First name Last name, and First name Last name (eds.) (publication date), Title, second or further edition, Place of publication: Publisher.
  • Articles in anthologies: Last name, First name (publication date), Title, in: First name Last name (ed.), Title of anthology, second or further edition, Place of publication: Publisher, pp. xx-xx.

5. Tables, graphs, and images
Tables, diagrams, and images should be used in moderation. They are to be numbered separately and continuously and provided with an individual title and an exact reference; they should be placed within the text at the appropriate points. Attention: Tables and images need to fit our text format, DIN A5 paper size; we do not print in landscape format. We print in black and white and therefore use shading rather than colours. Photos and other images can only be used after consultation with our printer. Please make sure you are in possession of copyrights. Also, when using images from the Internet, a full reference and a written reprint authorisation are necessary. Photos from news agencies are protected by copyright as well and are only to be reprinted with written authorisation (and in some cases payment of a licensing fee). Authors are solely responsible for obtaining reprint authorisation.

6. Book Reviews
Book reviews should not exceed 1,000 words and should contain the following:
  • a short summary of the book's contents;
  • the main research issues covered in the book and their connection to international scientific discussions;
  • an appraisal of the book’s theoretical framework, methods, formal weaknesses or strengths, and its contribution to the ongoing scientific debate.
The review should be headed by the following information: name and first name of the author(s), title, place of publication, publisher, year of publication, ISBN, and number of pages. It should not contain footnotes or bibliographic notes.

7. Author’s copy
