About the journal

Citizenship Studies publishes internationally recognised scholarly work on contemporary issues in citizenship, human rights and democratic processes from an interdisciplinary perspective covering the fields of politics, sociology, history and cultural studies. It seeks to lead an international debate on the academic analysis of citizenship, and also aims to cross the division between internal and academic and external public debate.

The journal focuses on debates that move beyond conventional notions of citizenship, and treats citizenship as a strategic concept that is central in the analysis of identity, participation, empowerment, human rights and the public interest. Citizenship is analysed in the context of contemporary processes involving globalisation, theories of international relations, changes to the state and political communities, multiculturalism, gender, indigenous peoples and national reconciliation, equity, social and public policy, welfare, and the reorganisation of public management. As a theoretically basic concept, citizenship provides new tools for formulating problems and providing practical analysis and advice in these fields. The journal seeks to publish papers that provide links between theory, institutions such as markets and religions, and the analysis of substantive issues.

Peer Review
All research articles in this journal have undergone rigorous peer review, basaed on initial editor screening and anonymized refereeing by at least two anonymous referees.

Instructions to Authors

This journal uses ScholarOne Manuscripts (previously Manuscript Central) to peer review manuscript submissions. Please read the guide for ScholarOne authors before making a submission. Complete guidelines for preparing and submitting your manuscript to this journal are provided below.

Citizenship Studies accepts original articles which are not under consideration by another publication at the time of submission. Articles should not exceed 8000 words in length, should be free from jargon and should be written as clearly and concisely as possible. Unsolicited articles cannot be returned. Accepted articles must conform to Citizenship Studies style requirements.

Submissions: All submissions should be made online at the Citizenship Studies Manuscript Central site. New users should first create an account. Once a user is logged onto the site submissions should be made via the Author Centre.

Authors should prepare and upload two versions of their manuscript. One should be a complete text, while in the second all document information identifying the author should be removed from files to allow them to be sent anonymously to referees. When uploading files authors will then be able to define the non-anonymous version as “File not for review”.

Presentation: Manuscripts should be double-spaced throughout (including all quotations, endnotes and references) and typed in English. Generous margins on both sides of the page should be allowed and pages numbered consecutively. The author should retain a copy as submitted manuscripts cannot be returned. Full names of the author(s) should be given, an address for correspondence, and where possible a contact telephone number, facsimile number and email address.

Endnotes: Notes should be marked clearly in the text at the point of punctuation by superior numbers, and listed consecutively at the end of the article. They should not be as footnotes to manuscripts pages.

Each table and figure should be numbered consecutively in Arabic numerals with an appropriate caption (e.g. Table 1, Table 2; Figure 1, Figure 2, and so on). Permission to reproduce copyright material must be obtained by the author(s) prior to submission and any acknowledgements should be included either in the text or the caption as appropriate. A camera ready copy of any tables and figures should be submitted in addition to those attached to the manuscripts.
