About the journal

Aims & Scope

Assessment & Evaluation in Higher Education is an established international peer-reviewed journal which publishes papers and reports on all aspects of assessment and evaluation within higher education. Its purpose is to advance understanding of assessment and evaluation practices and processes, particularly the contribution that these make to student learning and to course, staff and institutional development.

Assessment & Evaluation in Higher Education welcomes research-based, reflective or theoretical studies which help to illuminate the practice of assessment and evaluation in higher education. The journal is aimed at all higher education practitioners, irrespective of discipline. It sets out to provide readily accessible, up-to-date information about significant developments within the field, with a view to the sharing and extension of evaluated, innovative practice and the development of ideas. Suggestions for special issues are welcomed.

Peer Review Policy:
All papers submitted to Assessment and Evaluation in Higher Education undergo a rigorous peer review process, beginning with an initial screening by the editor prior to anonymised scrutiny by at least two independent expert referees. Following structured comments from referees, decisions are conveyed to authors together with feedback about the paper.

Instructions to Authors

This journal uses ScholarOne Manuscripts (previously Manuscript Central) to peer review manuscript submissions. Please read the guide for ScholarOne authors before making a submission. Complete guidelines for preparing and submitting your manuscript to this journal are provided below.

Manuscripts, ideally between 3000 and 5000 words, should be submitted online at Assessment and Evaluation in Higher Education's Manuscript Central site. New users should first create an account. Once a user is logged onto the site submissions should be made via the Author Centre.

Authors should prepare and upload two versions of their manuscript. One should be a complete text, while in the second all document information identifying the author should be removed from files to allow them to be sent anonymously to referees. When uploading files authors will then be able to define the non-anonymous version as “File not for review”.

Manuscripts may be submitted in any standard format, including Word, PostScript and PDF, however please note that a Word document is required for the Production Department once a paper has been accepted. These files will be automatically converted into a PDF file for the review process. This journal does not accept Microsoft Word 2007 documents. Please use Word's "Save As" option to save your document as an older (.doc) file type.

Manuscripts should double spaced with a wide margin to the left. All articles should be written in a clear and straightforward style, and be free from technical jargon. Detailed statistical evidence should be summarised in the text, though a limited amount of tabulated data may be included if they aid understanding, and will be comprehensible to lay readers. Footnotes to the text should normally be avoided. All papers should be original, but if there is overlap with material published elsewhere, details should be given

Figures. Please supply one set of artwork in a finished form, suitable for reproduction. Figures will not normally be redrawn by the publisher.

As an author, you are required to secure permission if you want to reproduce any figure, table, or extract from the text of another source. This applies to direct reproduction as well as "derivative reproduction" (where you have created a new figure or table which derives substantially from a copyrighted source). For further information and FAQs, please see http://journalauthors.tandf.co.uk/preparation/permission.asp

Electronic Processing, Figures should be sent electronically but care and attention to these guidelines are essential as importing graphics packages can often be problematic.

Figures must be saved individually and separate to text. Please do not embed figures in the paper file.

Avoid the use of colour and tints for purely aesthetic reasons.

Figures should be produced as near to the finished size as possible.

All figures must be numbered in the order in which they appear in the paper (e.g. Figure 1, Figure 2). In multi-part figures, each part should be labelled (e.g. Figure 1(a), Figure 1(b)).

Figure captions must be saved separately, as part of the file containing the complete text of the paper, and numbered correspondingly.

The filename for the graphic should be descriptive of the graphic, e.g. Figure1, Figure2a.

Files should be saved as one of the following formats: TIFF (tagged image file format), PostScript or EPS (encapsulated PostScript), and should contain all the necessary font information and the source file of the application (e.g. CorelDraw/Mac, CorelDraw/PC).

Please note that it is in the author's interest to provide the highest quality figure format possible. Please do not hesitate to contact our Production Department if you have any queries.

Tables and captions to illustrations. Tables must be typed out on separate sheets and not included as part of the text. The captions to illustrations should be gathered together and also typed out on a separate sheet. Tables and figures should be numbered consecutively by Arabic numerals. The approximate position of tables and figures should be indicated in the manuscript. Captions should include keys to any symbols used.

Citations of other work should be limited to those strictly necessary for the argument. Any quotations should be brief, and accompanied by precise references.
