About the journal
Description

Cities offers a comprehensive range of articles on all aspects of urban policy. It provides an international and interdisciplinary platform for the exchange of ideas and information between urban planners and policy makers from national and local government, non-government organizations, academia and consultancy.

The primary aims of the journal are to analyse and assess past and present urban development and management as a reflection of effective, ineffective and non-existent planning policies; and the promotion of the implementation of appropriate urban policies in both the developed and the developing world.

Topics covered include: Housing, homelessness and health; urban management; public-private sector cooperation; Third World development and planning problems; urban regeneration; urban conservation and design; technological innovation and urban planning; urban transportation.

Each issue also features a profile of a major city. Coverage includes a brief description of the city's historical development, an account of comtemporary conditions, problems or issues, and a critical review of recent or current policy, planning or management responses.

Guide for Authors

Online Submission

Cities manuscripts must be submitted online using our Web-based submission tool. To submit your paper online, please go to http://ees.elsevier.com/jcitand upload your article and its associated artwork. A PDF will be generated and the reviewing process will be carried out using that PDF. All correspondence between editor and author is performed by e-mail, and paper copies are not required at the original submission stage.

Contributions are received with the understanding that their contents are original, unpublished material and are not being submitted for publication elsewhere. Translated material, which has not been published in English, will also be considered. The Editors reserve the right to edit or otherwise alter contributions, but authors will receive proofs for approval before publication.

Presentation

General Manuscripts must be written in English and typed in journal style, double-spaced (including footnotes; abstracts and references should be triple spaced) and with a wide margin. If applicable good quality print outs with a font size of 12 or 10 pt are required.

Paper Length: Articles should be 5000-6000 words long, although articles longer than 6000 words will be accepted on an occasional basis, if the topic demands this length of treatment

Text: Manuscripts should be arranged in the following order of presentation. First page: short title, subtitle (if desired), acknowledgements (if any), corresponding author's name, affiliation, E-mail address, full postal address and telephone and fax numbers. Respective affiliations and addresses of co-authors should be clearly indicated. Second Page: a self-contained abstract of 150 to 250 words (outlining in a single paragraph the aims, scope and conclusions of the paper); keywords (up to six); article title abbreviated appropriately for use as a running headline. Subsequent pages: main body of text, list of references, appendices; tables; footnotes (numbered consecutively).

The text should be organized under appropriate section headings which, ideally, should not be more than 600 words apart. Section headings should be marked as follows: primary headings should be typed in capitals and underlined; secondary headings should be typed with initial capital letters and underlined; tertiary headings should be typed in lower case and underlined. Any subsequent headings should be preceded by a Roman numeral (I, ii, iii etc.) placed on the first line of text and underlined/ All headings should be placed on the left-hand side of the text.

All measurements should be given in metric units. Abbreviations do not take a plural form and are not followed by a point.

Authors are urged to write as concisely as possible, but not at the expense of clarity. Descriptive or explanatory pages, necessary as information but which tend to break up the flow of text, should be put into footnotes or appendices. Where possible, however, footnotes should be avoided.

References: All publications cited in the text should be presented in a list of references following the text of the manuscript. In the text refer to the author's name (without initials) and year of publication (e.g. "Since Peterson (1993) has shown that..." or "This is in the agreement with results obtained later (Kramer, 1994)"). For three or more authors use the first author followed by "et al.", in the text. The list of references should be arranged alphabetically by authors' names. The manuscript should be carefully checked to ensure that the spelling of authors' names and dates are exactly the same in the text as in the reference list. References should be given in the following form:

For journals: Bryant, C (1990) The Third World goes to town: will US policy catch up? Cities 7 (2), 125-132. Tipple, A G, Korboe, D and Garrod, G (1997) Income, wealth and and house ownership in urban Ghana. Housing Stud. 12, 111-126.

For books: Teymur, N (1988) Rehumanising Housing, Butterworths, Guildford.

Raj, M and Mitra, B (1990) Households, housing and home based economic activities in low income settlements. In: Raj, M and Nientied, P (Eds), Housing and Income in Third World Urban Development. Oxford and IBH, New Delhi, pp. 10-28.

Other Publications: Where there is doubt include all bibliographical details.

Illustrations: All illustrations should be uploaded in camera-ready form, suitable for reproduction (which may include reduction) without retouching. Photographs, charts and diagrams are all to be referred to as "Figure(s)" and should be numbered consecutively in the order to which they are referred. They should accompany the manuscript, but should not be included within the text.

Line drawings: All lettering, graph lines and points on graphs should be sufficiently large and bold to permit reproduction when the diagram has been reduced to a size suitable for inclusion in the journal. Photographs: Original photographs must be uploaded as they are to be reproduced (e.g. black and white).

Tables:Tables should be numbered consecutively and given a suitable caption. Tables should not duplicate results presented elsewhere in the manuscript, (e.g. in graphs).

CITY PROFILES

City Profiles are usually 5000-6000 words in length. They should make clear at the start why the city is being featured and should offer a brief description of the city's historical development, an account of contemporary conditions, problems or issues, and a critical review of recent or current policy, planning or management responses.

The following components will normally be required: location and physical constraints; summary history; demographics, economy and social conditions; urban form or design characteristics; key urban issues; political, planning and management structures; recent or current initiatives, successes or failures; future developments. City profiles often include a section focusing in on a specific area, sector, or other aspect of the city or of its planning or management. Location and city maps are normally required and photographs are encouraged.

Proposals may be put forward for series of two or more city profiles linked by a common category, theme or perspective. Linked profile series may be offered by a single contributor, or by two or more with a co-ordinating guest editor.

City Profile Manuscripts: Manuscripts should be typed double or 1.5 spaced, with references and footnotes numbered consecutively throughout the paper and listed together at the end of the text. Electronic maps and photographs should normally number a maximum of 8 in all. Title page should include: a self-contained abstract of 50-200 words; a list of up to 8 keywords; author's name, affiliation, full postal address, email address and telephone and fax numbers including international and national codes. Where there is more than one author, contact details may be those of the nominated corresponding author only. For further details regarding editing conventions, see 'Cities' Presentation section (above).

City Profiles must be submitted online using our Web-based submission tool. To submit your paper online, please go to http://ees.elsevier.com/jcit and upload your article and its associated artwork. A PDF will be generated and the reviewing process will be carried out using that PDF. All correspondence between City Profiles editor and author is performed by e-mail, and paper copies are not required at the original submission stage.

SHORTER ITEMS

The Viewpoint section exists for the expression of opinion, and allows authors to submit material which might not be appropriate for full-length articles but which contains ideas worthy of publication (2500-5000 words).

Book reviews are welcomed (800-1200 words).

Conference reports (1000-1500 words).

Notices of forthcoming meetings for listing in the Calendar section are also welcomed. Entries must be received at least three months before publication.

Shorter items must be submitted in the same way as major articles via EES clearly marking the purpose of the submitted article.

Proofs

Proofs will be sent to the author (first named author if no corresponding author is identified of multi-authored papers) and should be returned within 48 hours of receipt. Corrections should be restricted to typesetting errors; any others may be charged to the author. Any queries should be answered in full. Please note that authors are urged to check their proofs carefully before return, since the inclusion of late corrections cannot be guaranteed. Proofs are to be returned to the Log-in Department, Elsevier, Stover Court, Bampfylde Street, Exeter, Devon EX1 2AH, UK.

Offprints

Twenty five offprints will be supplied free of charge. Additional offprints and copies of the issue can be ordered at a specially reduced rate using the order form sent to the corresponding author after the manuscript has been accepted. Orders for reprints (produced after publication of an article) will incur a 50% surcharge.

Copyright

All authors must sign the "Transfer of Copyright" agreement before the article can be published. This transfer agreement enables Elsevier Ltd to protect the copyrighted material for the authors, without the author relinquishing his/her proprietary rights. The copyright transfer covers the exclusive rights to reproduce and distribute the article, including reprints, photographic reproductions, microfilm or any other reproductions of a similar nature, and translations. It also includes the right to adapt the article for use in conjunction with computer systems and programs, including reproduction or publication in machine-readable form and incorporation in retrieval systems. Authors are responsible for obtaining from the copyright holder permission to reproduce any material for which copyright already exists.

Author Services

Authors can also keep a track on the progress of their accepted article, and set up e-mail alerts informing them of changes to their manuscript's status, by using the "Track a Paper" feature of Elsevier's www.authors.elsevier.com.

Full details of electronic submission and formats can be obtained from http://authors.elsevier.com.

Contact details for questions arising after acceptance of an article, especially those relating to proofs, are provided when an article is accepted for publication.
