Australian Social Work is the professional journal of the Australian Association of Social Workers. Through the journal the Association seeks to promote the interests of the profession in Australia and to reflect the current thinking about and by the profession. Australian Social Work has grown out of the Australian context and continues to provide a vehicle for Australian authors. The journal publishes original research, theoretical papers and critical reviews that build on existing knowledge. The journal also publishes reviews of relevant professional literature, commentary and analysis of social policies and encourages debate in the form of reader commentary on articles. Submission of papers are invited from authors worldwide and all contributors are encouraged to present their work for an international readership. If CONFERENCE PAPERS are submitted then only an Abstract to the paper must appear in the published conference proceedings.
From 2007 the Journal will adopt a new style, all papers submitted from May 2006 must conform to the following:
Form Authors should prepare manuscripts according to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA) (5th ed.).
Text should be double-spaced. Instructions for preparing tables, figures and references appear in the Manual.
The word count is limited to 6000 words but shorter contributions will be accepted. Manuscripts must be the original work of the author(s) and will be received on the understanding that they have not been published, simultaneously submitted or accepted for publication elsewhere.
All manuscripts must include 3-6 relevant keywords and an Abstract of up to 200 words typed on a separate page which should outline the questions investigated, the design, essential findings and main conclusions of the study.
A cover page should include title, author(s), affiliation(s), author note, and address (including an e-mail address) for correspondence. As manuscripts are reviewed anonymously, the author's name and other identifying material should be omitted from the manuscript.
Manuscripts that do not comply with style and format requirements, or which are not neat and legible, will be returned without review.
Peer Review. All manuscripts are peer reviewed. The Editor selects several reviewers from the Australian Social Work Editorial panel to review each paper, if appropriate, a guest reviewer with specific expertise may be consulted. The process is anonymous in that the identity of authors and reviewers is not known to the other party. Articles may be accepted, returned for revision, or rejected. The editor may make minor alterations to articles on his or her own initiative.
The decision of the editor is final. The review process normally takes at least three months - longer when revision is necessary (revisions are often requested).
Data Sharing. Authors of data-based articles in Australian Social Work should have their research data available for at least 5 years after publication. On request, these data should be shared with other competent professionals for reanalysis, solely for the purpose of verifying the published findings, provided that participants' confidentiality is protected and unless legal rights concerning proprietary data prevent their release. Where relevant, the specific computer program used for data analysis should be identified.
Final Copy and Proofs. A PDF proof of the copy-edited article will be e-mailed to the corresponding author for correction prior to publication. No changes to content are permitted at this stage and alterations are restricted to correction of typographical errors
Submission. All submissions should be made online at the Australian Social Work ScholarOne Manuscripts site. New users should first create an account. Once a user is logged onto the site submissions should be made via the Author Centre.
Authors should prepare and upload two versions of their manuscript. One should be a complete text, while in the second all document information identifying the author should be removed from files to allow them to be sent anonymously to referees. When uploading files authors will then be able to define the non-anonymous version as “File not for review?
