Child: care, health and development is an international, peer-reviewed journal which publishes papers dealing with all aspects of the health and development of children and young people. We aim to attract quantitative and qualitative research papers relevant to people from all disciplines working in child health. We welcome studies which examine the effects of social and environmental factors on health and development as well as those dealing with clinical issues, the organization of services and health policy. We particularly encourage the submission of studies related to those who are disadvantaged by physical, developmental, emotional and social problems. The journal also aims to collate important research findings and to provide a forum for discussion of global child health issues.

A covering letter must be submitted as part of the online submission process, stating on behalf of all the authors that the work has not been published and is not being considered for publication elsewhere. All accepted papers should be accompanied by a copyright assignment form. Copyright of accepted manuscripts and all published material becomes the property of the Journal.
For guidance on ethical aspects, authors are recommended to consult the proposals of the MR. Report 1962/3 on human investigations published in the British Medical Journal (1964) B, 178-180.
Preparation of the manuscript
The following checklist should be used to check the manuscript before submission. Articles are accepted for publication at the discretion of the Editor. A manuscript, which ideally will be between 2000 and 3000 words, should consist of the sections listed below.
Manuscript style: Manuscripts must be submitted online at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/cch. All parts of the manuscript must be available in an electronic format and it is recommended that, where possible, figures be embedded into a single Microsoft Word document.
Manuscripts should be typed using double spacing and size 12 pt. No identifying details of the authors or their institutions must appear in the submitted manuscript. Author details will be inputted as part of the online submission process.
Title page: The title page should give both a descriptive title and short title. The title should be concise and should give a brief indication of what is in the paper.
Main text: Generally, all papers should be divided into the following sections and appear in this order: Abstract (structured abstracts, not more than 300 words, including background, methods, results and conclusions are preferred); Introduction; Methods; Results; Discussion; Acknowledgements; References; Tables; Figures. Authors must provide a word count for the main body of the text.
Units and spellings: Système International (SI) units should be used, as given in Units, Symbols and Abbreviations (4th edition, 1988), published by the Royal Society of Medicine Services Ltd, 1 Wimpole Street, London W1M 8AE, UK. Spelling should conform to that used in The Concise Oxford Dictionary, published by Oxford University Press.
References: References cited in the text should list the authors names followed by the date of their publication, unless there are three or more authors when only the first author's name is quoted followed by et al. References listed at the end of the paper should include all authors' names and initials, and should be listed in alphabetical order with the title of the article or book, and the title of the Journal given in full as shown:
Havermans, T. & Eiser, C. (1994) Siblings of a child with cancer. Child: care, health and development, 20, 309-322.
Cart, P. (1984) Observation. In: The Research Process in Nursing (ed. D.F.S. Cormack), pp. XX-XX. Blackwell Publishing, Oxford, UK.
Work that has not been accepted for publication and personal communications should not appear in the reference list, but may be referred to in the text (e.g. 'A. Author, unpubl. observ.' or 'B. Author, pers. comm.'). It is the authors' responsibility to obtain permission from colleagues to include their work as a personal communication. A letter of permission should accompany the manuscript.
Figures and tables: Always include a citation in the text for each figure and table. Artwork should be submitted online in electronic form. Detailed information on our digital illustration standards is available on the Blackwell Publishing website at: http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/authors/submit_illust.asp. Any abbreviations used in figures and tables should be defined in a footnote.
Approval for reproduction/modification of any material (including figures and tables) published elsewhere should be obtained by the authors/copyright holders before submission of the manuscript. Contributors are responsible for any copyright fee involved.
Acknowledgements: These should be brief and must include references to sources of financial and logistical support.
Special issues
From time to time the Editor will commission a special issue of the Journal which will take the form of a number of papers devoted to a particular theme.
Page proofs
Proofs will be sent via e-mail as an Acrobat PDF (portable document format) file. The e-mail server must be able to accept attachments up to 4 MB in size. Acrobat Reader will be required in order to read this file. This software can be downloaded (free of charge) from the following Web site: www.Adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html/ This will enable the file to be opened, read on screen, and printed out in order for any corrections to be added. Further instructions will be sent with the proof. Proofs will be posted if no e-mail address is available; in your absence, please arrange for a colleague to access your e-mail to retrieve the proofs.
Proofs must be returned to the production office within 3 days of receipt. Only typographical errors can be corrected at this stage. Major alterations to the text cannot be accepted.
Offprints
Authors will be provided with electronic offprints of their article. Paper offprints may be ordered at prices quoted on the order form, which accompanies proofs. Note that this form should not be returned with your proofs, but to the fax number on the form. The cost is more if the order form arrives too late for the main print run. Offprints are normally despatched within 3 weeks of publication of the issue in which the paper appears. Please contact offprint@cosprinter.com if offprints do not arrive: however, please note that offprints are sent by surface mail, so overseas orders may take up to 6 weeks to arrive. Electronic offprints are sent to the corresponding author at his or her first e-mail address.
Copyright
Authors will be required to assign copyright in their paper to Blackwell Publishing Ltd. Copyright assignment is a condition of publication and papers will not be passed to the publisher for production unless copyright has been assigned. To assist authors, an appropriate copyright assignment form will be supplied to you by the editorial office (Government employees in both the US and the UK need to complete the Author Warranty sections, although copyright in such cases does not need to be assigned.)
