About the journal
Road & Transport Research is a quarterly journal of interest to those involved in the roads and transport fields, both local and international. Road and Transport Research blends refereed papers with the best of papers from other sources that you may not otherwise find, and also keeps you up to date with: news and Local Government items, new publications, reviews, forthcoming events and conference reports.
Instructions to Authors

Road and Transport Research aims to publish original work which assists in bringing new knowledge and insights to practitioners and decision makers, within the scope of the Journal's objectives as listed below.

Priority is given to papers which help to translate research into practice, or which examine issues in the land transport sector. Our primary focus is research and practice in Australia and New Zealand, or work which is judged to be of relevance to practitioners and decision makers in those countries and the countries in which they provide professional services. This may include papers relevant to practice in the Asia-Pacific region.

We seek to publish material in several categories:

Refereed Papers  manuscripts submitted for consideration must conform to the following basic requirements:

  • ideally less than 5000 words in length;
  • references cited using the Harvard (author, date) system, with the references listed in alphabetical order at the end of the paper;
  • all tables and copies of figures (including photographs), numbered sequentially in Arabic numerals and with full captions, sources and notes, must be placed at the end of the paper, with the position of each table and figure clearly indicated in the text. Originals of illustrations should not be sent until requested by the Editor, and must then be in a form suitable for publication;
  • a face sheet is required, containing the following: Paper title, name(s) and affiliation(s) of the author(s), full contact details (including fax number and email address of the corresponding author) and an abstract of 150-200 words.
  • Manuscripts should be submitted electronically as Word documents. When creating figures please use a draw or chart/graph program such as Freehand, Illustrator, Corel Draw or Excel and save the files in one of the following formats: EPS, PICT, BMP, Freehand, Illustrator or Excel. Requirements for submission of scanned images are: for line diagrams, 600dpi (resolution); for photographs 300dpi and must be saved as either TIFF or JPEG format. Figures and photos must be supplied as separate files and not only as placements within the Word document.
  • Papers for review may be sent to us by email, at \n journal@arrb.com.au This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . If sending the document on disk by post, a hard copy should be included.

Incomplete manuscripts not conforming to these requirements, or clearly requiring extensive editing, cannot be accepted for refereeing. Authors not having English as a first language are advised to seek advice from an appropriate reviewer before submitting their paper.

It is the authors'  responsibility to guarantee the authenticity of their papers and articles and to obtain the necessary permissions and authorisations for material and photographs. The Editor is not responsible for the opinions expressed by the contributors.

Unless notified by the author to the contrary, it will be assumed by the Editor that a submitted paper has not been published or offered elsewhere, and that the author holds full rights of publication. Papers previously published in a refereed journal or published conference proceedings will not normally be accepted (but see 'Invited Papers').

Highly technical papers better suited to a limited audience through specialist academic journals are not encouraged. Essential technical and mathematical material should be included as an appendix rather than break the flow of the paper.

Manuscripts are judged on their scholarly merit and relevance to the Journa's readership, initially by the Editorial Panel and then by at least two independent experts in the relevant field. Papers are also subjected to technical refereeing to maintain style consistency before publication.

The refereeing process satisfies the requirements for academic accreditation, and we aim to publish acceptable papers within six to nine months of receipt.

Invited Papers  papers previously presented at conferences but not formally published, or otherwise not likely to receive widespread attention, may be considered for publication as 'Invited Papers' if they meet the Journal's Purpose and general requirements for publication. These are not normally refereed, but may be edited in consultation with the author. The Editor welcomes suggestions from readers and Conference organisers about papers that may be suitable, and invite authors themselves to submit their own papers. Details of previous presentation should be made clear.

Technical Notes   provide an opportunity for the dissemination of technical ideas, notes on processes, interim findings, and so on, which are not sufficiently developed or complete to warrant a full paper. Suggested maximum length is 1500 words. Technical Notes are not refereed but may be edited.

Opinion and Letters    letters to the Editor which put a point of view on material previously published in the Journal, or on a matter of topical interest, are welcome. We may accept longer material in the form of articles under the heading of 'Opinion' which allow writers to put forward personal views or interpretations in a more discursive way. The use of the first person is acceptable in these cases.

Bulletin Board   brief (100-750 word) and newsworthy items concerning recent events, innovations, personnel movements etc, with illustrations where appropriate, are welcomed.

Reviews and New Publications    publishers are invited to submit copies of new publications for review and/or announcement. Reviews from readers are especially welcome.

Conferences   details of forthcoming events in Australia and overseas should be forwarded to the Editor. Allow
time for publication. Reports and commentaries on recent conferences are invited.

Advertising    opportunities to advertise in this Journal are now available at the Editor's discretion. For further details, including rates, please contact the Editor.
