Instructions to Authors
Manuscript Submission
Manuscripts, in duplicate and in English, should be submitted to the Editor along with a diskette or CD containing the article and an abstract, together with a $15.00 manuscript−submission fee ($5.00 for subscribers) (checks must be made payable to: Lauren Joseph):
Javier Auyero Qualitative Sociology Dept. of Sociology University of Texas at Austin 1 University Station -- A 1700 Austin, TX 78712
TEL: (512) 471-1122 FAX: (512) 471-1748 E−mail: Qualitative_Sociology@austin.utexas.edu
and should be checked for content and style (correct spelling, punctuation, and grammar; accuracy and consistency in the citation of figures, tables, and references; stylistic uniformity of entries in the References section; etc.).
Page proofs (of accepted manuscripts) are sent to the designated author for proofreading and checking. Typographical errors are corrected; authors' alterations are generally not allowed.
Publication Policies
Submission is a representation that the manuscript has not been published previously and is not currently under consideration for publication elsewhere. A statement transferring copyright from the authors (or their employers, if they hold the copyright) to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC will be required before the manuscript can be accepted for publication. The Editor will supply the necessary forms for this transfer. Such a written transfer of copyright, which previously was assumed to be implicit in the act of submitting a manuscript, is necessary under the U.S. Copyright Law in order for the publisher to carry through the dissemination of research results and reviews as widely and effectively as possible.
Review Process
Qualitative Sociology policy guarantees anonymity in the review process. Therefore, author(s)' names should appear only on one copy of a separate title page. All other identifying material, such as citations and references to author(s)' work, should be adjusted or removed.
In the text employ the following device: [author]. This will inform the reader the material comes from published work without revealing the author(s)' identity. Papers that do not meet these requirements will be returned to authors.
Manuscript Style
Type double−spaced on one side of 8 1/2 11 inch white paper using generous margins on all sides, and submit the original and 1duplicate copy (including copies of all illustrations and tables).
Papers should be a maximum of 10,000 words in length, with all copy typed double-space. Do not use proportional spacing, but allow the text at its right−hand edge to be unjustified (ragged).
Papers should be clear, concise, and correct; should be written in the active (not passive) voice; and should avoid sociological jargon.
Title Page
A title page is to be provided and should include
the title of the article |
author's name (no degrees) |
author's affiliation |
and suggested running head. |
The affiliation should comprise
the department |
institution (usually university or company) |
city |
and state (or nation) |
and should be typed as a numbered footnote to the author's name. The suggested running head should be less than 80 characters (including spaces) and should comprise the article title or an abbreviated version thereof.
The title page should also include the complete mailing address and e-mail address of the one author designated to review proofs.
Abstract
An abstract is to be provided, preferably no longer than 100 words. |
Key Words
A list of 3 - 5 key words is to be provided directly below the abstract. Key words should express the precise content of the manuscript, as they are used for indexing purposes. |
References
Cite references in the text by name and year in parentheses. There should be no commas between author name and year and semicolons are to be used if there is more than one author. List references alphabetically at the end of the paper.
References should include (in this order):
last names and initials of all authors |
year published |
title of article |
name of publication |
volume number |
and inclusive pages |
Footnotes
Footnotes should be avoided. When their use is absolutely necessary, footnotes should be numbered consecutively using Arabic numerals and should be typed double−spaced on a separate page at the end of the manuscript. Place this page just before references. Use the appropriate superscript numeral for citation in the text. |
Illustration Style
Illustrations
Illustrations (photographs, drawings, diagrams, and charts) are to be numbered in one consecutive series of Arabic numerals. |
The captions for illustrations should be typed on a separate sheet of paper. |
Photographs should be large, glossy prints, showing high contrast. |
Drawings should be prepared with india ink. |
Either the original drawings or good−quality photographic prints are acceptable. |
Identify figures on the back with author's name and number of the illustration. |
Electronic artwork submitted on disk should be in the TIFF or EPS format (1200 dpi for line and 300 dpi for half−tones and gray−scale art). |
Color art should be in the CYMK color space. |
Artwork should be on a separate disk from the text, and hard copy must accompany the disk. |
Tables
Tables should be numbered (with Roman numerals) and referred to by number in the text. |
Each table should be typed on a separate sheet of paper and appended at the end of the manuscript. |
Center the title above the table, and type explanatory footnotes (indicated by superscript lowercase letters) below the table. |
Submission of Accepted Manuscripts
After a manuscript has been accepted for publication and after all revisions have been incorporated, manuscripts should be submitted to the Editor's Office as hard copy accompanied by electronic files on disk. Label the disk with identifying Information software, journal name, and first author's last name. The disk must be the one from which the accompanying manuscript (finalized version) was printed out. The Editor's Office cannot accept a disk without its accompanying, matching hard−copy manuscript.
Page Charges
The journal makes no page charges. Reprints are available to authors, and order forms with the current price schedule are sent with proofs.
