Instructions to Authors
Australian Academic & Research Libraries welcomes original and high quality submissions. The Journal publishes practice-based research, pure and applied research, and review articles. AARL will consider publishing special issues on topics that are within the Journal’s scope. Please contact the editors to discuss potential special issues.
All substantial manuscripts submitted to AARL are blind peer-reviewed by two experts in the field. Manuscripts should be from 5,000 to 8,000 words, excluding references, depending on the nature of the work and must be submitted in Microsoft Word format. A brief abstract of up to 200 words and full contact details of authors should be included in a submission. English (UK) standards for spelling and grammar should be used and referencing must conform to the Chicago author-date style ( http://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/home.html ). Footnotes are not acceptable. Explanatory and supplementary material should appear in the body of the manuscript or omitted. Manuscripts should be submitted to the Taylor & Francis Editorial Manager site: http://wwww.edmgr.com/uarl/ . The complete text must include a short bio of 100 words maximum.
Book reviews
AARL encourages succinct, evaluative reviews of books on all aspects of library and information studies. Anyone wishing to contribute a review should contact the Book Reviews Editor (aarl.reviews@alia.org.au) in advance. Published reviews are normally around 500-600 words.
Instructions for authors
Submission of a manuscript to this journal represents a certification on the part of the author(s) that it is an original work and that neither this manuscript nor a version of it has been published elsewhere or is being considered for publication elsewhere. Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyrighted material from other sources and are required to grant the publisher exclusive license to publish his/her article. For more information on Taylor & Francis’ position on Copyright and Author Rights for authors contributing to Routledge’s US-published Library and Information Science journals, please visit http://journalauthors.tandf.co.uk/preparation/lisrights.asp .
Manuscripts should be compiled in the following order: title; abstract; keywords; main text; acknowledgments; references; appendixes (as appropriate); table(s) with caption(s) (on individual pages); figure caption(s) (as a list). Authors should prepare and upload two versions of their manuscript. One should be a complete text, while in the second all information identifying the author(s) should be removed (in text, references and document properties) to allow them to be sent anonymously to referees. When uploading files authors will then be able to define the non-anonymous version as "File not for review".
All parts of the manuscript should be type written, double-spaced, with margins of at least 2.5cm on all sides, and consecutively numbered pages. Each article should be summarized in an abstract of not more than 200 words and include 4-6 keywords that reflect the topic of the paper. Avoid abbreviations, diagrams, and reference to the text in the abstract. In the ‘not for review’ version of the manuscript author names, position and organisation should be listed in the order they will appear in the published paper. Full contact information for the corresponding author must be provided.
References
References and in-text citations should follow the latest edition of The Chicago Manual of Style, using the author-date format. All in-text citations (unless Chicago states otherwise) should be listed alphabetically in the reference list.
Tables and Figures
Tables and figures should be submitted in black and white. They should not be embedded in the text, but should be included as separate sheets or files. Tables and figures should be clearly captioned (titled) and numbered in the order they appear in the text using Arabic numerals. Captions should include keys to symbols. The approximate position of tables and figures should be indicated in the manuscript.
Figures
Please supply one set of artwork in a finished form, suitable for reproduction. Figures will not normally be redrawn by the publisher.
Illustrations
Illustrations submitted (line drawings, halftones, photos, photomicrographs, etc.) should be clean originals or digital files. Digital files are recommended for highest quality reproduction and should follow these guidelines:
- -300 dpi or higher
- -Sized to fit on journal page (not larger than 5 x 7 inches)
- -EPS, TIFF, or PSD format only
- -Submitted as separate files, not embedded in text files
As an author, you are required to secure permission if you want to reproduce any figure, table, or extract from the text of another source. This applies to direct reproduction as well as "derivative reproduction" (where you have created a new figure or table which derives substantially from a copyrighted source). For further information and FAQs, please see http://journalauthors.tandf.co.uk/preparation/permission.asp .
