Instructions to Authors
The instructions below are specifically directed at authors that wish to submit a manuscript to Journal of Environmental Planning and Management. For general information, please visit the Publish With Us section of our website.
Journal of Environmental Planning and Management considers all manuscripts on the strict condition that they have been submitted only to Journal of Environmental Planning and Management, that they have not been published already, nor are they under consideration for publication or in press elsewhere. Authors who fail to adhere to this condition will be charged with all costs which Journal of Environmental Planning and Management incurs and their papers will not be published.
Contributions to Journal of Environmental Planning and Management must report original research and will be subjected to review by referees at the discretion of the Editorial Office.
Manuscript preparation
1. General guidelines
- Papers are accepted only in English. UK spelling is preferred. Please also use double quotation marks rather than single.
- A typical article will not exceed 8,000 words; shorter is better.. Papers that greatly exceed this will be critically reviewed with respect to length. All manuscripts will be refereed and only those receiving favourable recommendation will be accepted for publication. Members of the international advisory board will be pleased to discuss or forward papers on behalf of authors.
- Manuscripts should be compiled in the following order: title page; abstract; main text; acknowledgments; appendices (as appropriate); references; table(s) with caption(s) (on individual pages); figure caption(s) (as a list).
- Manuscripts should be double-spaced throughout including the reference section, with wide (3 cm) margins, and all pages should be numbered.
- Abstracts of around 100 words are required for all papers submitted. The abstract should be clear and informative, giving an indication of the scope of and results contained in the paper.
- Section headings should be concise. Do not underline, italicize or otherwise annotate the text. Do not use footnotes; if explanatory notes are essential, refer to them in the text by superscripts 1, 2, 3, etc. The notes themselves should be gathered together at the end of the manuscript before the references section. All measurements should be in metric units, or state metric equivalents.
- All the authors of a paper should include their full names, affiliations, postal addresses, telephone and fax numbers and email addresses on a separate cover page of the manuscript. One author should be identified as the Corresponding Author.
- Authors must supply the names, full postal and email addresses of three suitable and potential referees for their manuscript. One of these will be asked to referee the manuscript, along with one other selected by the editor.
- Biographical notes on contributors are not required for this journal.
- For all manuscripts non-discriminatory language is mandatory. Sexist or racist terms should not be used.
- Authors must adhere to SI units. Units are not italicised.
- When using a word which is or is asserted to be a proprietary term or trade mark, authors must use the symbol
2. Style guidelines
3. Table and figures
Artwork submitted for publication will not be returned and will be destroyed after publication, unless requested otherwise. Whilst every care is taken of artwork, neither Editor nor Taylor & Francis shall bear any responsibility or liability for its non-return, loss or damage, nor for any associated costs or compensation. Authors are strongly advised to insure appropriately.
- It is in the author's interest to provide the highest quality figure format possible. Please be sure that all imported scanned material is scanned at the appropriate resolution: 1200 dpi for line art, 600 dpi for grayscale and 300 dpi for colour and halftones (photographs).
- Tables and figures (maps, charts, diagrams, photographs, etc.) must be saved separate to text. Please do not embed tables or figures in the paper file.
- Files should be saved as one of the following formats: TIFF (tagged image file format), PostScript or EPS (encapsulated PostScript), and should contain all the necessary font information and the source file of the application (e.g. CorelDraw/Mac, CorelDraw/PC).
- All tables and figures must be numbered with consecutive Arabic or roman numbers in the order in which they appear in the paper (e.g. table 1, table 2, figure I, figure II). In multi-part figures, each part should be labelled (e.g. table 1(a), table 2(b), figure I(a), figure II(b)).
- Table and figure captions must be saved separately, as part of the file containing the complete text of the paper, and numbered correspondingly.
- Photographs should be well-contrasted prints on glossy paper, unmounted and approximately final size. Mark (very lightly) the author's name, figure number and the 'top' on the back of each. If lines or lettering must appear on the photograph, supply two copies of which one should be marked.
- Line diagram copies should be submitted at the size the author would wish them to appear, but originals should be 1.5 to 2 times final size. They must be in dense black ink on draughting film or equivalent. Maximum final sizes in the journal, including borders, are 12.5 cm x 20.5 cm (full page)and 12.5 cm x 10.25 cm (half page). Include lettering on the diagram, allowing for reduction, or supply a separate tracing paper overlay marked to ensure exact positioning and registration. Ensure that scales, keys and other critical labelling are not included.
- The filename for a graphic should be descriptive of the graphic, e.g. Figure1, Figure2a.
4. Colour
The Journal has no free colour pages within its annual page allowance. Authors of accepted papers who propose publishing figures in colour in the print version should consult Taylor & Francis at proof stage to agree a financial contribution to colour reproduction costs. Figures that appear in black-and-white in the print edition of the Journal will appear in colour in the online edition, assuming colour originals are supplied.
5. Reproduction of copyright material
Contributors are required to secure permission for the reproduction of any figure, table or extensive extract (more than fifty words) from the text of a source that is copyrighted or owned by a party other than Taylor & Francis or the contributor. This applies to direct reproduction as well as 'derivative reproduction', where the contributor has created a new figure or table that derives substantially from a copyrighted source. Authors are themselves responsible for the payment of any permission fees required by the copyright owner. Copies of permission letters should be sent with the manuscript upon submission to the Editor(s).
6. Supplementary online material
Authors are welcome to submit animations, movie files, sound files or any additional information for online publication.
