CommunicatThe Library and Information Association of South Africa (LIASA) publishes a professional journal, the South African Journal of Libraries and Information Science.
Originally published under the title "The South African Journal of Librarianship and Information Science, the journal has retained its numbering. It is published in at least two issues per annum. An Editorial Management Committee works under the direction of the Chief Editor, Professor Dennis Ocholla of the Department of Library and Information Science at the University of Zululand, KwaZulu Natal. The Editor is Professor Peter G. Underwood of the Centre for Information Literacy of the University of Cape Town.
The title reflects the Association's keen sense of the need to address the practical, as well as the theoretical issues, that confront the professional librarian and information workers in South Africa. Topics include:
- Information seeking and retrieval
- Information and knowledge management
- Information organization and representation
- Information for development
- Indigenous knowledge and indigenous knowledge systems
- Information, communication and technology
- Information law, ethics and philosophy
- Information dissemination
- Informetrics
- Digital libraries and portals
- Web development and web technologies
- Information literacy
- Children's literature
- Information society/knowledge society
- LIS education and training etc.
The title reflects the practical component of libraries, research and teaching information science whilst also being committed to maintaining the integrity of the high academic and research standards set by the journal, recognized both nationally and internationally, over the course of its existence. LIASA believes that the publication should serve and reflect the interests of the South African LIS community across the spectrum of its wide-ranging activities and research. In addition to formal scholarly articles, the editors strive to identify and solicit articles on issues of practice and controversial matters as they arise. is the aim is also to encourage young writers, researchers and practitioners to share their experiences and findings so that all aspects of research, teaching, thinking and practice are brought together through the South African Journal of Libraries and Information Science.
