About the journal
TopAims and Scope
Children & Society is an interdisciplinary journal publishing high quality research and debate on all aspects of childhood and policies and services for children and young people. The journal is based in the United Kingdom, with an international range and scope.
Children & Society embraces academic research, policy and practice in relation to the health, education and welfare of children from infancy through to adulthood. The journal informs all those who work with and for children, young people and their families by publishing innovative papers on research and practice across a broad spectrum of topics, including: theories of childhood; children's everyday lives at home, school and in the community; children's culture, rights and participation; children's health and well-being; child protection, early intervention and prevention.
We welcome top quality academic papers on these and other topics for submission to our panel of peer reviewers. Our aim is to be the journal of first choice for leading international childhood researchers and a forum for critical analysis and debate.
Children & Society is a key resource for practitioners, policy-makers and scholars seeking an understanding of children and young people in contemporary societies and the issues that affect their lives.
Children & Society is published by Blackwell on behalf of the National Children's Bureau, with an independent editorial board.
Instructions to Authors Author Guidelines
Manuscript submission
Articles submitted to the journal should be original contributions, which are not under consideration for any other publication at the same time. Manuscripts should be submitted online at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/chso. Full instructions and support are available on the site and a user ID and password can be obtained on the first visit. Support can be contacted by phone (+1 434 817 2040 ext. 167), e-mail (support@scholarone.com) or at http://mcv3support.custhelp.com. If you cannot submit online, please contact Norma Sweeney in the Editorial Office by telephone +44 17 38 45 04 98 or by e-mail C&Soffice@oxon.blackwellpublishing.com
Authors must also supply
-
An Exclusive Licence Form with original signature - without this we are unable to publish the article.
-
Permission letters - it is the author's responsibility to obtain written permission to reproduce (in all media, including electronic) material which has appeared in another publication.
Manuscript style The language of the journal is English. It is aimed at a multidisciplinary audience; the language and style used should reflect this. Technical terms should be briefly explained. Do not use footnotes. All submissions must have a title, be printed on one side of the paper in double-line spacing, and have a margin of 3cm all round. Illustrations and tables must be printed on separate sheets, and not incorporated into the text.
-
The title page must list the full title, short title and the names and affiliations of all authors. Give the full address, including e-mail, telephone and fax, of the corresponding author.
-
Include the name(s) of any sponsor(s) of the research contained in the article, along with grant number(s).
-
The article will be sent for peer review without the above identifying details.
-
Articles should be no more than 6,000 words in length, including abstract, references and tables.
-
Supply an abstract of up to 100 words for all articles. An abstract is a concise summary of the whole article, not just the conclusions, and is understandable without reference to the rest of the article. It should contain no citation to other published work. The abstract should be included in the main document that is uploaded to Manuscript Central as well as being typed into the separate abstract text box.
-
Include a brief biography of each author.
The Editors reserve the right to refuse any manuscript submitted, whether on invitation or otherwise, and to make suggestions and modifications before publication.
Illustrations, tables and figures must be submitted in electronic format where possible. Save each one as a separate file, in TIFF or EPS format preferably, and include the source file. Write on the disk the software package used to create them; we favour dedicated illustration packages over tools such as Excel or Powerpoint. Supply each illustration on a separate sheet, with the lead author's name and the figure/table number. The top of figures should be indicated on the reverse. Supply original photographs; photocopies or previously printed material will not be used. Line artwork must be high-quality laser output (not photocopies). Tints are not acceptable. Lettering must be of a reasonable size that would still be clearly legible upon reduction, and consistent within each figure and set of figures.
References should be quoted in the text as name and year within brackets, and listed at the end of the paper alphabetically. Where reference is made to more than one work by the same author published in the same year, identify each citation in the text as follows: (Collins, 1998a), (Collins 1998b). Where three or more authors are listed in the reference list, please cite in the text as (Collins and others, 1998). All references must be complete and accurate. Where possible the DOI* should be included at the end of the reference. Online citations should include date of access. If necessary, cite unpublished or personal work in the text, but do not include it in the reference list. References should be listed in the following style:

Developed by the International DOI Foundation on behalf of the publishing industry, its goals are to provide a framework for managing intellectual content, link customers with publishers, facilitate electronic commerce, and enable automated copyright management.

Each article must be accompanied by an Exclusive Licence Form (ELF) which will be sent to the authors upon notification of acceptance of the article. Authors will be required to sign an Exclusive Licence Form for all papers accepted for publication. Signature of the ELF is a condition of publication and papers will not be passed to the publisher for production unless a signed form has been received. Please note that signature of the Exclusive Licence Form does not affect ownership of copyright in the material. (Government employees need to complete the Author's Warranty sections, although copyright in such cases does not need to be assigned). After submission, authors will retain the right to publish their paper in various media/circumstances (please see the form for further details). A copy of the form for Article submissions can be downloaded here. A copy of the form for Book Review submissions can be downloaded here. Authors must also ensure that the final version of the manuscript is complete and without spelling or typographical errors. Authors are also to ensure that references list match those cited in the text.
Proofs In order to check proofs, the corresponding author will receive an email alert containing a link to a website. A working email address should be provided for the corresponding author, although hard copies can be posted if necessary. The proof can be downloaded as a pdf [portable document format] file from the website. Acrobat Reader will be required to read this file, which can be downloaded free. This will enable the file to be opened, read on screen and printed out for any corrections to be added. Further instructions will be sent with the proof.
Proof checking must not be used as an opportunity to revise the article because alterations are extremely costly. Extensive changes will be charged to the author and will probably result in the article being delayed to a later issue. Excessive changes made by the author, excluding typesetting errors, will be charged separately.
PDF offprints On publication, a final pdf file of your article will be sent to you, subject to our terms and conditions of use.
Author Services Online production tracking is now available for your article through Blackwell's Author Services. Author Services enables authors to track their article - once it has been accepted - through the production process to publication online and in print. Authors can check the status of their articles online and choose to receive automated e-mails at key stages of production. The author will receive an e-mail with a unique link that enables them to register and have their article automatically added to the system. Please ensure that a complete e-mail address is provided when submitting the manuscript. Visit www.blackwellpublishing.com/bauthor for more details on online production tracking and for a wealth of resources including FAQs and tips on article preparation, submission and more.
Pre-submission English-language editing Authors for whom English is a second language may choose to have their manuscript professionally edited before submission to improve the English. A list of independent suppliers of editing services can be found at www.blackwellpublishing.com/bauthor/english_language.asp. All services are paid for and arranged by the author, and use of one of these services does not guarantee acceptance or preference for publication.
