About the journal
This is the leading international journal in its area emphasising the need for interdisciplinary research into economic, social and environmental aspects of sustainable development. All contributions are peer-reviewed with the aim of providing readers with high quality, original material. Its emphasis is on publishing high quality research contributions that debate and discuss how sustainable development can be achieved within government, business and civil society. It encourages papers with a national and international focus but also recognises the importance of local action for sustainable development. Contributions can range from practical applications of sustainable development and policy contributions through to philosophical discussions and debates. Regular reviews of books are included. What binds the contributions together is a recognition of the central importance of a more sustainable development of economies and societies. The journal should be of interest to a broad interdisciplinary audience including academics, practitioners, business managers and consultants.

Instructions to Authors
Initial Manuscript Submission. Submit one copy of the manuscript (including copies of tables and illustrations) to Professor R. Welford ERP Environment PO Box 75 Shipley, BD17 6EZ UK
Authors must also supply:
- an electronic copy of the final version (see section below),
- a Copyright Transfer Agreement with original signature(s) - without this we are unable to accept the submission, and
- permission grants - if the manuscript contains extracts, including illustrations, from other copyright works (including material from on-line or intranet sources) it is the author's responsibility to obtain written permission from the owners of the publishing rights to reproduce such extracts using the Wiley Permission Request Form. Permission grants should be submitted with the manuscript.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been previously published and should not be submitted for publication elsewhere while they are under consideration by Wiley. Submitted material will not be returned to the author unless specifically requested.
Electronic submission. The electronic copy of the final, revised manuscript must be sent to the Editor together with the paper copy. Disks should be PC formatted; write on the disk the software package used, the name of the author and the name of the journal. We prefer submissions to be in Word format.
Illustrations must be submitted in electronic format where possible. Save each figure as a separate file, in TIFF or EPS format preferably, and include the source file. Write on the disk the software package used to create them; we favour dedicated illustration packages over tools such as Excel or Powerpoint.
Manuscript style. The language of the journal is English. Manuscripts should be between 3500 and 6000 words long. All submissions including book reviews must have a title, be printed on one side of the paper, be double-line spaced and have a margin of 3cm all round. Illustrations and tables must be printed on separate sheets, and not be incorporated into the text.
- The title page must list the full title, short title of up to 70 characters and names and affiliations of all authors. Give the full address, including e-mail, telephone and fax, of the author who is to check the proofs.
- Include the name(s) of any sponsor(s) of the research contained in the paper, along with grant number(s).
- Supply an abstract of up to 150 words for all articles except book reviews. An abstract is a concise summary of the whole paper, not just the conclusions, and is understandable without reference to the rest of the paper. It should contain no citation to other published work.
- Include up to eight keywords that describe your paper for indexing purposes.
Reference style. References should be cited in the text as name and year and listed at the end of the paper alphabetically. Where reference is made to more than one work by the same author published in the same year, identify each citation in the text as follows: (Collins, 1998a), (Collins, 1998b). Where three or more authors are listed in the reference list, please cite in the text as (Collins et al., 1998)
All references must be complete and accurate. Where possible the DOI for the reference should be included at the end of the reference. Online citations should include date of access. If necessary, cite unpublished or personal work in the text but do not include it in the reference list. References should be listed in the following style:

Illustrations. Supply each illustration on a separate sheet, with the lead author’s name and the figure number, with the top of the figure indicated, on the reverse. The artwork must be sized to the text width of 7cm (single column) and 16cm (double column).
The cost of printing colour illustrations will be charged to the author. There is a charge for printing colour illustrations of ?00 per page. If colour illustrations are supplied electronically in either TIFF or EPS format, they may be used in the PDF of the article at no cost to the author, even if this illustration was printed in black and white in the journal. The PDF will appear on the Wiley InterScience site.
Copyright. To enable the publisher to disseminate the author’s work to the fullest extent, the author must sign a Copyright Transfer Agreement, transferring copyright in the article from the author to the publisher, and submit the original signed agreement with the article presented for publication. A copy of the agreement to be used (which may be photocopied) can be found in the first issue of each volume of Sustainable Development. Copies may also be obtained from the journal editor or publisher, or may be printed from this website.
Further Information. Proofs will be sent by e-mail to the author for checking. This stage is to be used only to correct errors that may have been introduced during the production process. Prompt return of the corrected proofs, preferably within two days of receipt, will minimise the risk of the paper being held over to a later issue. Twenty-five complimentary offprints will be provided to the author who checked the proofs, unless otherwise indicated. Further offprints and copies of the journal may be ordered. There is no page charge to authors.
