About the journal
Aimed at a diverse readership, the Australian Journal of Public Administration is committed to the study and practice of public administration, public management and policy making. It encourages research, reflection and commentary amongst those interested in a range of public sector settings - federal, state, local and inter-governmental. The journal focuses on Australian concerns, but welcomes manuscripts relating to international developments of relevance to Australian experience.

AJPA is a refereed publication which appears quarterly under the auspices of the Institute of Public Administration Australia. The journal is supplied free to Institute members. Business correspondence and submissions should be addressed to:

The following points should be taken as a guide to intending contributors.
1. Aimed at a diverse readership, the Journal is committed to the study and practice of public administration, public management and policy making. APJA encourages research, reflection and commentary amongst those interested in a range of public sector setting - federal, state, local and inter-governmenatl. The journal focuses on Australian concerns, but welcomes manuscripts relating to international developments of relevance to Australian experience. The editors encourage contemporary and critical issues. 2. The journal has adopted a standardised set of headings within which submissions will normally be arranged. While these headings will act as a guide to intending authors, the journal will also utilise other headings where appropriate. Research and Evaluation articles should not exceed 7000 words and will consist of typically academic pieces. Professional Perspectives of between 2000-4000 words will present material about practical and current issues but will not be required to adhere to 'scholarly' attributes. Controversies will present thoughtful and provocative presentation of an argument of debate and should consist of 1500-2500 words. Rejoinders or responces to these controversies must be shown to substantively contribute to the debate to be considered for publication. From the Field pieces will be between 3000-5000 words and will consist of primary accounts or material commenting on events and occurrences of interest. Other Reports are limited to 1000 words. 3. Book reviews of between 300-800 words and short reviews or book notes of 100 words are encouraged. Reviews should not be overly academic but should aim to make readers aware of new works in the field, contain some kind of assessment of the worth-importance of new books, and be readable for a general audience. To assist the refereeing process, please do not put your name on the main article. A separate cover sheet should be provided indicating name, title, position identification and the word length details. Another separate sheet should also provide an abstact of between 100-120 words which, as well as providing a summary, should state what the article has to offer the general reader. 5. Submissions emailed to ajpa@anu.edu.au typed double-spaced preferably in Times/Times Roman font format. References indicated throughout the text i.e. (Walsh and Butler 2001) (Davies et al. 1993). Notes to be indicated first at the end of the paper followed by References alphabetical in format - Alford, J. 2002. 'Defining the client in the public sector: A social exchange perspective', Public Administration Review, 62: 337-47. Notwithstanding the above, articles using legal styles of citation will be considered. 6. Articles not in conformity with the AJPA's style will not be accepted for publication. 7. Submission of an article is taken to imply that it has not previously been published, nor is being considered for publication elsewhere and that the contents are original. 8. Copyright in articles published in AJPA is held by Blackwell Publishing Asia Pty Ltd. Republication elsewhere of an article initially published in AJPA is encouraged subject to (i) gaining prior approval of the AJPA editors (ii) gaining prior approval of the publisher, Blackwell Publishing Asia Ltd (iii) ensuring the re-publisher provides appropriate acknowledgment of the original source and (iv) the agreement of the: author(s) concerned. Authors will ' required to vest copyright in the Institute prior to publication. 9. Articles accepted for publication become copyright of Institute of Public Administration Australia and authors will be asked to sign a transfer of copyright form. In signing the transfer of copyright it is assumed that authors have obtained permission to use any copyrighted or previously published material. All authors must read and agree to the conditions outlined in the Copyright Assignment Form, and must sign the form or agree that the corresponding author can sign on their behalf.
