About the journal
The Australian Journal of Political Science is the official journal of the Australasian Political Studies Association. The editorial team of the Journal includes a range of Australian and overseas specialists covering the major subdisciplines of political science.
We publish articles of high quality at the cutting edge of the discipline, characterised by conceptual clarity, methodological rigour, substantive interest, theoretical coherence, broad appeal, originality and insight. The Journal features a lively exchange of views and therefore publishes critical comments and responses. Research notes reporting on current research projects, research designs and preliminary findings are also published.
All significant books by Australasian political scientists and books investigating Australasian politics are given comprehensive coverage. So too are review articles dealing with either a set of books or emerging themes in the discipline.

Manuscripts of articles should normally be between 5,000 and 7,000 words in length. A manuscript that exceeds 8,000 words is unlikely to be acceptable. Research notes, commentaries and book review essays should not normally exceed 3,000 words in length. Contributors intending to submit book review essays or other book reviews are advised to consult the Review Editor prior to submission.
The AusJPS requires three hardcopies of manuscripts submitted for consideration as articles, research notes or commentaries. These should be accompanied by one hardcopy of a cover sheet that lists the manuscript title, the author(s) names, the author(s) academic or other affiliation, a return mailing address and an email address if possible. Only the title should appear on the manuscript itself, followed by an abstract of not more that 130 words. The cover sheet will not be sent to referees. Submission of a disk or email attachment version of a manuscript is not mandatory but it can help to facilitate the refereeing process where a referee prefers to read an electronic copy. AusJPS is produced using Microsoft Word for Windows software and the editors can normally accept a disk file in that format or readily convertible into it. Please scan your file with an up-to-date virus checker before submitting. Keep a copy of all submitted material because neither manuscripts nor disks will be returned to the author. Ensure that hardcopies and electronic versions are identical by printing out the submitted hardcopies from the submitted electronic version. The final version of any paper accepted for publication must be submitted in both hardcopy and on disk. It must conform to the AusJPS referencing style, a guide to which is available from the Editor on request, or at http://auspsa.anu.edu.au/publications/ajps.htm. A few sentences of biographical detail will also be required.
It is a condition of publication that authors vest or license copyright in their articles, including abstracts, in Australasian Political Studies Association. This enables us to ensure full copyright protection and to disseminate the article, and the journal, to the widest possible readership in print and electronic formats as appropriate. Authors may use the article elsewhere after publication providing that prior permission is obtained from Taylor & Francis. Authors are themselves responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyright material from other sources.
Early Electronic Offprints: Corresponding authors can now receive their article by e-mail as a complete PDF. This allows the author to print up to 50 copies, free of charge, and disseminate them to colleagues. In many cases this facility will be available up to two weeks prior to publication. Or, alternatively, corresponding authors will receive the traditional 50 offprints. A copy of the journal will be sent by post to all corresponding authors after publication. Additional copies of the journal can be purchased at the author’s preferential rate of ?5.00/$25.00 per copy. |
