Instructions to Authors This journal uses ScholarOne Manuscripts (previously Manuscript Central) to peer review manuscript submissions. Please read the guide for ScholarOne authors before making a submission. Complete guidelines for preparing and submitting your manuscript to this journal are provided below.
Aims and Scope. Assistive Technology® is an applied, scientific publication in the multi-disciplinary field of technology for people with disabilities. The journal’s purpose is to foster communication among individuals working in all aspects of the assistive technology arena including researchers, developers, clinicians, educators and consumers. The journal will consider papers from all assistive technology applications. Only original papers will be accepted. Technical notes describing preliminary techniques, procedures, or findings of original scientific research may also be submitted. Letters to the Editor are welcome. Books for review may be sent by authors or publishers. The Book Review Editor will select reviewers.
Please note that Assistive Technology uses CrossCheck™ software to screen papers for unoriginal material. By submitting your paper to Assistive Technology you are agreeing to any necessary originality checks your paper may have to undergo during the peer review and production processes.
Review Process. All papers submitted to Assistive Technology® are subject to critical peer review by three referees, either Editorial Board members or invited reviewers, who have special expertise in a particular subject. To ensure objectivity, authors will remain anonymous to referees. The Editor will have final authority over a paper’s suitability for publication.
Manuscript Submissions. Assistive Technology receives all manuscript submissions electronically via their ScholarOne Manuscripts website located at: http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/UATY . ScholarOne Manuscripts allows for rapid submission of original and revised manuscripts, as well as facilitating the review process and internal communication between authors, editors and reviewers via a web-based platform. For ScholarOne Manuscripts technical support, you may contact them by e-mail or phone support via http://scholarone.com/services/support/ . If you have any other requests, please contact the journal’s editor at al.cook@ualberta.ca.
Page Limits. Published articles should be no longer than 8 typeset pages. In order to comply with this limit, manuscripts should be no longer than 21 typed double-spaced pages of text and tables and have no more than 5 figures. Manuscripts that include more than 5 figures should include fewer pages of text and tables.
Clients/Subjects. Refer to clients/subjects by number (or letter codes unrelated to their names). Real names or initials should not be used in the text, tables, or illustrations.
Photographic Consent. A letter of consent must accompany all photographs of persons in which the possibility of identification exists. It is not sufficient to cover the eyes to mask identity.
Measurements. All measurements should be indicated in both the US measurement system and metric.
Details of Style. For abbreviations, follow the Council of Biology Editors Style Manual or other standard sources.
References. References and citations should be prepared in accordance with the APA Publication Manual, 6th ed. Cite in the text by author and year of publication (Smith, 1983) and include an alphabetical list at the end of the article. Accuracy of reference data is the responsibility of the author. Examples:
Journal article: Jutai. J.W., Rigby, P., Ryan, S., & Stickel, S. (2000). Pyschosocial impact of electronic aids to daily living. Assistive Technology , 12, 123–131.
Book: Staney, K.M. (2002). Handbook of virtual environments: Design, implementation, and applications. Mahwah, NJ: Erlbaum.
Proceedings or Chapter in a Book: Smit, R.O. (2002). Assistive technology outcome assessment prototypes: Measuring “INGO” variables of “oucomces.” In R. Simpson (Ed.), Proceedings of the RESNA 25th Annual Conference (pp. 239–341). Minneapolis, MN: RESNA Press.

Illustrations. Illustrations submitted (line drawings, halftones, photos, photomicrographs, etc.) should be clean originals or digital files. Digital files are recommended for highest quality reproduction and should follow these guidelines:
- 300 dpi or higher
- sized to fit on journal page
- EPS, TIFF, or PSD format only
- submitted as separate files, not embedded in text files
Color Reproduction. Color art will be reproduced in color in the online publication at no additional cost to the author. Color illustrations will also be considered for print publication; however, the author will be required to bear the full cost involved in color art reproduction. Please note that color reprints can only be ordered if print reproduction costs are paid. Print Rates: $900 for the first page; $450 per page for the next three pages of color. A custom quote will be provided for articles with more than four pages of color. Art not supplied at a minimum of 300 dpi will not be considered for print.
Tables and Figures. All tables and figures must be cited in the text by number. Tables and figures (illustrations) should not be embedded in the text, but should be included as separate sheets or files. A short descriptive title should appear above each table with a clear legend and any footnotes suitably identified below. All units must be included. Figures should be completely labeled, taking into account necessary size reduction. Captions should be typed, double-spaced, on a separate sheet.
Proofs. Page proofs are sent to the designated author via email using Taylor & Francis’ Central Article Tracking System (CATS). They must be carefully checked and returned within 48 hours of receipt.
Complimentary Policy and Reprints. Authors for whom we receive a valid email address will be provided an opportunity to purchase reprints of individual articles, or copies of the complete print issue. These authors will also be given complimentary access to their final article on Taylor & Francis Online.
Accepted Manuscript Online (AMO). Manuscripts submitted to the journal are eligible for rapid online posting if a valid copyright form is received and nothing is missing from the paper. The original manuscript will be available on Taylor & Francis Online in a section on the journal’s page entitled “Forthcoming Articles.” Posted papers will be clearly labeled as the “Accepted, uncorrected manuscript” versions and will include DOI numbers so that the papers can be cited and referenced. Authors will also receive notification from Taylor & Francis when the manuscript is posted, when typeset proofs are available, and once again when the final version is posted. The papers in this section will be removed once the edited and final typeset version is posted online.
