Instructions to Authors

Psychonomic Bulletin & Review is primarily dedicated to the publication of theory and review articles and to brief reports of outstanding empirical work. Commentaries on previously published articles will also appear in the journal. Theoretical papers should propose a new theoretical treatment of some problem, or modify an existing one. Review articles should examine important issues and phenomena within the field; meta-analytic techniques may be used where appropriate. Other articles, commenting on general trends in the field or providing a novel perspective on a problem, will also be considered. Papers in these categories may be of any length, although submissions of more than 70 pages of text are strongly discouraged. Brief Reports of experimental work for Psychonomic Bulletin & Review are restricted to a maximum of 4,000 words. This word count includes the main text and references but excludes title page, abstract, figures, and tables. Authors of Brief Reports should be sparing with regard to figures and/or tables.

Submissions on topics from all areas of experimental psychology are welcome. Examples include animal learning and behavior, sensation and perception, all aspects of cognitive psychology and psycholinguistics, psychobiology and cognitive neuroscience, social cognition, cognitive development, and educational psychology. This list is not exhaustive, however.

This journal is published by the Psychonomic Society under the direction of its Publications Committee (Chair, 2006: Suparna Rajaram). The Publications Committee and the Editor expect that human and animal subjects will be treated ethically. Mistreatment of subjects is grounds for rejection of a manuscript.

Submissions. Authors can submit manuscripts for consideration by Editor Elect Robert Nosofsky by visiting http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/pbr. Please note that the word count for Brief Reports for all text materials including references, but excluding the title page, abstract, figures, and tables, must be indicated on the title page and be below the maximum of 4,000 words for consideration. If you have any questions please click here.

As of May 31, 2006, all resubmissions or revisions from David Balota's term as Editor will be treated as new submissions and directed to Robert Nosofsky.

Please see the Guidelines for Authors for information on submissions, formats, permissions, proof, reprints, tables, and figures. If you still have submission questions, you can contact the Administration Office at pbr@psychonomic.org.

Final Accepted Version: The final accepted version of the manuscript must be submitted in accordance with the Guidelines for Authors. There you will find information on formats, electronic files, permissions, proof, reprints, tables, and figures. If you still have questions regarding submission of your accepted manuscript, you can contact the Publications Office at psp@psychonomic.org or (512) 462-2442.

Copyright and Permission: Authors must secure from both the Psychonomic Society and the author of reproduced material written permission to quote text of more than 500 words or to reproduce two or more tables or figures from any article published in this journal, except for the few that are in the public domain. The fee only is waived for authors who wish to use their own material commercially.

Permission from the Society is waived for authors who wish to reproduce a single table or figure, provided the author's permission is obtained and full credit is given to the Psychonomic Society and the author through a complete citation. (If written permission is requested for commercial use of a single table or figure, the $10 fee will be assessed.) Permission and fees are waived for authors who wish to reproduce their own material for personal use, and for others to make single or multiple copies of single articles for personal, noncommercial scholarly or for nonprofit, educational classroom use. Extensive use of copy privileges in such a way as to substitute for a subscription to this journal is not intended or permitted.
