About the journal

Applied Psychology: An International Review is the official journal of the International Association of Applied Psychology (IAAP), the oldest worldwide association of scholars and practitioners of the discipline of psychology (founded in 1920).  To join IAAP online click here.

Applied Psychology: An International Review is a forum for the scholarly exchange of applied psychology research findings. It has multinational contributors and covers a diversified range of the most important applied psychology fields. Particularly invited are articles that advance understanding of psychological processes across a range of applied phenomena and studies that examine the effects of different national and cultural contexts.  Review papers that stimulate debate and discussion are also encouraged.

Three types of freely submitted articles appear in Applied Psychology: Journal Articles describe important research or theoretical developments for specific issues; Lead Articles review and extend a body of research at a critical juncture and are supplemented with peer commentaries to create an international scientific discussion; and International Replication Notes provide replications of known phenomena in new cultural contexts. Special Issues are also published, with guest editors and invited contributions with a particular thematic focus.

To subscribe to Applied Psychology: An International Review please click here. (Personal and Institutional subscriptions available)The Journal is also available to members of the International Assocation of Applied Psychology.  For details of how to join the Association, please click here.

Instructions to Authors

The Journal seeks to publish work that develops, tests, or advances applied psychology theory, research, and practice. Articles should have well-articulated and strong theoretical foundations.

Topics appropriate for Applied Psychology include organizational behavior, leadership, cross-cultural psychology, work motivation, psychological assessment and evaluation, performance measurement, training, job attitudes, career development, negotiation and conflict resolution, work stress, organizational design and intervention, consumer behavior, national development, group, environmental, educational, economic, political, developmental, health, sport, and traffic psychology.

All of the articles published in the journal are reviewed. They are evaluated according to the following criteria: (a) significance of contribution, (b) adequacy of research method, (c) appropriateness, and (d) clarity of presentation. Particularly invited are articles that advance our understanding of applied phenomena across different national and cultural contexts that stimulate debate and discussion.

Article Types:

1. The journal article (approx. 25 printed pages) focuses on one of the topic areas described above and either explicates important research findings or provides a comprehensive review of a specified issue.

2. Lead articles (approx. 35 printed pages). The following topics are invited as lead articles: succinct presentations of lines of research; controversial debates between theories; debates on general issues of interest to applied psychologists, which cut across different areas; presentations of theory and results of a 'hot topic'; or presentations or theory and results in an area that is under-researched. After peer revision, the lead article will be given to five or six prominent commentators from around the world who will write open peer commentaries, six to seven pages (double spaced) in length. The lead article author may then reply, in a rejoinder up to 5 pages long.

3. International Replication Notes (approx. 5 printed pages): Consists of replications of findings of known phenomena reported in the literature within cultural or national contexts that have not been studied before.

Special Issues are occasionally published. These are composed by guest editors who invite contributions with a particular thematic or regional focus for the whole issue.

All articles should comply with the following guidelines:

Submission: Authors should electronically submit a copy of their manuscript to the Editor, Robert Wood, at apir@agsm.edu.au. File formats should be MS Word or WordPerfect and must be PC compatible. If using other packages, the files should be saved as Rich Text Format or Text Only.

Manuscripts should not ordinarily exceed 30 double-spaced pages with margins of no less than 3cm. Manuscripts should be prepared in accordance with the format prescribed by the American Psychological Association. For details see the Publication Manual of the APA. Once accepted, authors are asked to provide a final hard copy, which cannot be altered at proof stage.

Please send two separate files: One file with the manuscript itself, written anonymously, so that author details will not be shown anywhere on it. And a second file which will include only the manuscript's title and the author(s) details such as name(S), current address, telephone and fax numbers and email address.

Anonymous reviews: All manuscripts will be refereed anonymously.

Title: The title should be concise and should be supplied on a separate sheet together with the author's name(s), title, current address, telephone and fax numbers and email address.  A short title of no more than 40 characters (including spaces) should also be supplied.

Abstract: The title must be included again, on the same page and immediately before the abstract.  An abstract of 50-200 words in English should precede the article.  This will be translated into French.

Headings: There should be no more than three (clearly marked) levels of subheadings used in the text of the article.

Acknowledgements: These should be supplied, as briefly as possible, on a separate page. Statistics. Results of statistical tests should be given in the following form: F(1,9) = 23.35, P < .001. Similarly for t, and other tests. The logic of significance testing implies that only a small number of conventional levels of P should be quoted (e.g. .05, .01, .001).

References: The APA style of referencing is used (author's name and date of publication bracketed in the text) and all works cited should be listed alphabetically by author after the main body of the text, to the journal style as follows:

Tables and artwork: All tables and artwork should be supplied on separate sheets, not included within the text, but have their intended position clearly indicated in the manuscript. Figures should be supplied as high quality, original artwork and any lettering or line work should be able to sustain reduction to the final size of reproduction. Tints or complex shading should be avoided and color should not be used. Figures supplied on disk must be accompanied by a hard copy and should be originated in a drawing package and saved as an EPS file.

Exclusive Licence Form: Authors will be required to sign an Exclusive Licence Form (ELF) for all papers accepted for publication. Signature of the ELF is a condition of publication and papers will not be passed to the publisher for production unless a signed form has been received. Please note that signature of the Exclusive Licence Form does not affect ownership of copyright in the material.  (Government employees need to complete the Author Warranty sections, although copyright  in such cases does not need to  be assigned).  After submission authors will retain the right to publish their paper in various medium/circumstances (please see the form for further details).  To assist authors an appropriate form will be supplied by the editorial office. Alternatively, authors may like to download a copy of the standard form here.
