About the journal

Aims and Scope
New Technology, Work and Employment presents analysis of the changing contours of technological and organisational systems and processes, to encourage an enhanced understanding of the many dimensions of technological change in the workplace. The journal is eclectic and multidisciplinary, inviting contributions from all the applied social sciences. Its objective is to promote understanding through conceptual debate firmly rooted in the analysis of current practice.

Instructions to Authors

Author Guidelines
Scope of the journal

The new technologies of one decade increasingly become commonplace by the next, so that technology is best understood as a process that continually throws up challenges in the workplace to both management and employees. It informs and is informed by organisational structure, job design, changing markets and competitive environments. New Technology Work and Employment presents analysis of the changing contours of technological and organisational systems and processes, to encourage an enhanced understanding of the many dimensions of technological change in the workplace.  The journal welcomes comparative and international perspectives and aims to be eclectic and multi-disciplinary, inviting contributions from all the disciplines within social science and management.  Its aim is to promote understanding by conceptual debate in the context of the research and analysis of current practice.

Themes that have been examined in recent issues have included: skill, autonomy and control at work; technology and gender; technology and quality initiatives; the technological component of new management initiatives; the future of work; teleworking; collective and individual form of employee resistance; employee health and safety; and technology and knowledge work.

Controversy and debate are encouraged but articles should be so written that they are intelligible to non-specialists as well as specialists.


Submission of Articles

All articles should be submitted to the Editor, who also welcomes outlines of potential ideas for articles, for comment and advice.  All articles submitted will be sent out for double-blind refereeing. Please submit to the Editor (address on front cover):

?Three copies of your manuscript, double spaced, and typed on one side only.  The manuscript should have been checked for spelling and punctuation errors.  In cases of multiple authorship, the corresponding author should be indicated.
?An electronic version either on disc or via email.
?A word count, including tables and graphs (see below).
?A brief (50 word) Abstract.
?A short autobiographical note with full address and contact details, current organisational affiliation and research interests..

Length
Articles should be between 6,000 and 8,000 words.  Large tables and diagrams should be counted as equivalent to 800 words.

Layout
Sub-headings should not be numbered.

References
Citations should be given in the text in a 'Harvard' style such as: (Sels and Huys, 1999).  A full list of references cited should be given at the back of the article in alpha order. Examples:

Besser, T. (1996), Team Toyota; Transplanting the Toyota Culture to the Camry Plant in Kentucky, Albany: State University of New York Press.

Footnotes
Please try to avoid footnotes.  Their content should either be incorporated in the text or, if absolutely necessary, given as an after-note at the end of the article, before the references.

Mathematical and econometric material
Algebraic equations and models should only be used where they clarify or advance the argument.

Copyright
Authors must indicate if their articles have been published elsewhere, even in a different form. If subject to copyright, clearance must be obtained by the author and forwarded to the Editor. All articles published in NTWE are subject to the Journal's copyright and may not be published elsewhere without the Journal's consent.

Exclusive Licence Form

Authors will be required to sign an Exclusive Licence Form (ELF) for all papers accepted for publication. Signature of the ELF is a condition of publication and papers will not be passed to the publisher for production unless a signed form has been received. Please note that signature of the Exclusive Licence Form does not affect ownership of copyright in the material.  (Government employees need to complete the Author Warranty sections, although copyright  in such cases does not need to  be assigned).  After submission authors will retain the right to publish their paper in various media/circumstances (please see the form for further details).  To assist authors an appropriate form will be supplied by the editorial office.
