About the journal
Applied Nursing Research presents original, peer-reviewed research findings clearly and directly for clinical applications in all nursing specialties. Regular features include "Ask the Experts," research briefs, clinical methods, book reviews, news and announcements, and an editorial section. Applied Nursing Research covers such areas as pain management, patient education, discharge planning, nursing diagnosis, job stress in nursing, nursing influence on length of hospital stay, and nurse/physician collaboration. The Journal is listed in Index Medicus and RN Index Top 100.
Instructions to Authors
Applied Nursing Research is a refereed research journal devoted to uniting the efforts of all professional nurses to advance nursing as a research-based profession. Applied Nursing Research presents nursing research in a clear, straightforward style to emphasize results and encourage readers to apply findings in their own practice. Our efforts are focused on bridging the gap between research and practice.
A query letter or fax before manuscript submission is welcome but not mandatory. Please send query to the journal editor.
Original articles
Authors are asked to focus on research findings and how those findings can be applied to practice. The manuscript should convey the author's enthusiasm for the specific advances in clinical practice indicated by the research. In the manuscript clearly articulate the research purpose(s) and/or questions. Include a brief description of the study background, including rationale for the research. Provide a summary of the study methods (e.g., design, sample, instrumentation, and procedures). Authors are asked to present material in a framework and style that highlight and explain results and emphasize applications for nursing practice. Key references are to be included; please limit to 15. Figures, photographs, and illustrations are welcome.
Manuscripts representing all clinical nursing specialties are invited. Studies related to nursing management, nursing roles, and professional development are also welcome.
Original article submissions are reviewed by two pairs of research-clinician referees. Publication decisions are based on the referees' evaluation. Authors of original and feature articles receive complimentary copies of the journal issue in which their articles appear. All complimentary copies are sent to the first-named author for distribution to co-authors.
Clinical Methods
In Clinical Methods issues related to and effective techniques for conducting studies within clinical settings are presented. Papers selected for publication address methodological issues or techniques that are of concern to nurses conducting clinical research. Clinical Methods articles are reviewed by two research-clinician teams. Figures/illustrations and photographs are encouraged.
Research briefs
Abstracts of research in progress or completed pilot research are invited. The emphasis should be on preliminary results and directions for continuing research.
Special features
Special features have been designed to promote a communication loop and foster interchange among nurses. Papers on timely issues or topics related to the "state of nursing research" are desired. Special features are peer reviewed.
International column
This feature is designed to serve as a forum for exchanging perspectives on nursing research and scholarship from around the world. Papers are reviewed and commented on by the author's international colleagues, and their comments are printed along with the paper as part of the printed article. Please submit papers (no longer than 5 pages) that are focused on state of the art issues in nursing science.
Ask an expert
This feature provides practicing nurses with an opportunity to ask questions or seek advice from expert nurse researchers. Please submit questions regarding clinical research issues to the journal editor. Responses to selected questions will be published.
Format
All manuscripts must be submitted in typed, double-spaced form with pages numbered. On the cover sheet of the original, include the title of the manuscript and names, complete postal addresses, telephone numbers (i.e., work, home, and fax), and e-mail addresses of all authors. Also, provide the complete credentials and clinical and/or academic affiliation of all authors, and any acknowledgements on the cover page of the original. On the additional four copies, provide only the title of the manuscript on the cover sheet. Author(s) identification should not appear elsewhere.
With the original typed manuscript, submit a matching electronic file, preferably in Word or WordPerfect, either via email or on a 3?inch disk formatted for the PC. A matching electronic file should also accompany any revised manuscript.
Manuscripts for Original Articles or Special Features should be no less than 10 and no more than 15 double-spaced typewritten pages, excluding tables, illustrations/figures, and references (generally limited to 15). A brief abstract, no more than 100 words, should emphasize the findings and clinical implications. Authors may wish to suggest appropriate callouts, that is, phrases or brief sentences extracted from the manuscript that highlight key points. Callouts should be listed on a separate sheet.
Papers submitted for publication in the Clinical Methods section should be 8 to 12 double-spaced, typewritten pages, including tables, illustrations/figures, and key references. Research Briefs should be five to seven double-spaced, typewritten pages with key references included.
For submissions to all sections, guidelines in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 4th edition, should be used for manuscript format (e.g., short title on each page, style and inclusion of tables, statistics reporting, and references). Drawings or illustrations must be submitted camera-ready; photographs must be black and white and of a quality that can clearly be reproduced.

Illustrations. Black and white photographs, diagrams, and graphs are highly recommended to illustrate findings and emphasize clinical applications. Photographs are to be 5 x 8-inch glossies. Photographs of recognizable individuals must be accompanied by releases signed by each person appearing in the photograph. Guardians must sign for minors. A sample standard release form is provided above (Fig. 1).

Diagrams, graphs, and line drawings must be professionally rendered and submitted as camera-ready art. Laser-printed graphics that have been computer-generated are acceptable. Please call the Production Editor at (215) 238-5641 if you have questions regarding illustrations.
If any table, photograph, or illustration has been published previously, a copy of the letter or permission from the copyright holder must accompany the manuscript. The source should be included among the references to the paper. The table or illustration legend should conclude with the "Reprinted with permission" information. See the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA), 4th edition, for the specific format.
Sidebars. A sidebar is a brief, boxed segment of text that appears within an original article. It can be used to present a case study, report the author's experience related to the topic of the study, or discuss similar experiences in other settings. Recommendations for further research, policy implications, or "consumer highlights" (e.g., what would be of interest regarding your research to health care consumers?) can be submitted as a sidebar. Sidebars should be typed, double-spaced, on a separate sheet of paper with the heading "Sidebar" and the article title appearing at the top of each page. Generally, a sidebar is no more than two pages, and only one sidebar should be submitted with each article.

Authors should submit a cover letter explicitly stating the section of the journal for which the manuscript is being submitted. Also, please include, with the submitted manuscript, any publication where the same content or data set has been used, and summarize in your cover letter how this submitted manuscript is different. If there are no other publications, please state this in your letter. Manuscripts that do not comply with the format and submission guidelines will be returned to the authors without being reviewed.

The review decision is sent to the first author or the designated corresponding author. Edited manuscripts are submitted to the first author for approval.
Manuscripts are accepted for publication on the conditions that they are submitted solely to this journal, that the material is original, and that it has not been previously published.
Proofreading
Galley proofs are sent to the first author. They are to be checked for errors and returned to the Publisher within 48 hours. Important changes in data will be accepted, but authors will be charged for excessive alterations in proofs.

Authors contributing a manuscript do so with the understanding that, once it is accepted for publication, copyright of the article, including the right to reproduce the article in all forms of media, shall be assigned exclusively to the Publisher.
