About the journal
Applied Cognitive Psychology seeks to publish the best papers dealing with psychological analyses of memory, learning, thinking, problem solving, language, and consciousness as they occur in the real world. Applied Cognitive Psychology will publish papers on a wide variety of issues and from diverse theoretical perspectives. The journal focuses on studies of human performance and basic cognitive skills in everyday environments including, but not restricted to, studies of eyewitness memory, autobiographical memory, spatial cognition, skill training, expertise and skilled behaviour. Articles will normally combine realistic investigations of real world events with appropriate theoretical analyses and proper appraisal of practical implications. While empirical research remains the primary focus of the journal, Applied Cognitive Psychology also publishes theoretical articles, reviews and surveys.
Applied Cognitive Psychology is the official journal of the Society for Applied Research in Memory and Cognition (SARMAC). The aim of the Society is to promote the communication of applied research in memory and cognition within and between the applied and basic research communities. Don Read is the Editor representing SARMAC, elected by the Governing Board of the Society. All manuscripts originating in North America should be sent to Don Read. Manuscripts originating in Australasia should be sent to the Australasian Editor, Martine Powell. Manuscripts from the rest of the world should be sent to the Founding Editor, Graham Davies.
Instructions to Authors
Manuscript Submission. Applied Cognitive Psychology operates an online submission and peer review system that allows authors to submit articles online and track their progress via a web interface. Please read the remainder of these instructions to authors and then click http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/acp to navigate to the Applied Cognitive Psychology online submission site.
All papers must be submitted via the online system.
Authors must also supply:
- a Copyright Transfer Agreement with original signature(s) - without this we are unable to accept the submission, and
- permission grants - if the manuscript contains extracts, including illustrations, from other copyright works (including material from on-line or intranet sources) it is the author's responsibility to obtain written permission from the owners of the publishing rights to reproduce such extracts using the Wiley Permission Request Form.
Submission of a manuscript will be held to imply that it contains original unpublished work and is not being submitted for publication elsewhere at the same time. The Copyright Transfer Form and the Permissions Form should be sent to the production office immediately following the online submission of your article to: ACP Production, John Wiley & Sons Ltd., The Atrium, Southern Gate, Chichester, West Sussex, PO19 8SQ, UK.
File types. Preferred formats for the text and tables of your manuscript are .doc, .rtf. Figures must be provided in .tiff or .eps format.
Manuscript style. The language of the journal is English. All submissions, including book reviews, must have a title, be double-line spaced and have a margin of 3cm all round. Tables must be on separate pages after the reference list, and not be incorporated into the main text. Figures should be uploaded as separate Image files.
- The title page must list the full title, the short title, and names and affiliations of all authors. Give the full address, including email, telephone and fax, of the author who is to check the proofs.
- Include the name(s) of any sponsor(s) of the research contained in the paper, along with grant number(s).
- Supply a summary of up to 150 words for all articles. This should be a concise summary of the whole paper, not just the conclusions, and is understandable without reference to the rest of the paper. It should contain no citation to other published work.
Reference style. References should follow the conventions laid down in the Fifth Edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association.
All references must be complete and accurate. Where possible the DOI for the reference should be included at the end of the reference. Online citations should include date of access. References should be listed in the following style:
1. The Geriatric Website. 1999. http://www.wiley.com/oap/ [ 1 April 1999 ] 2. Thierry, K. L., & Spence, M. J. (2004) A real-life event enhances the accuracy of preschoolers' recall. Applied Cognitive Psychology 18, 297-309. DOI: 10.1002/acp.965
Illustrations. Upload each figure as a separate file in either .tiff or .eps format, with the lead author's name, the figure number and the top of the figure indicated. Compound figures e.g. 1a, b, c should be uploaded as one figure. Tints are not acceptable. Lettering must be of a reasonable size that would still be clearly legible upon reduction, and consistent within each figure and set of figures. Where a key to symbols is required, please include this in the artwork itself, not in the figure legend. All illustrations must be supplied at the correct resolution:
- Black and white and colour photos - 300 dpi
- Graphs, drawings, etc - 800 dpi preferred; 600 dpi minimum
- Combinations of photos and drawings (black and white and colour) - 500 dpi
The cost of printing colour illustrations in the journal will be charged to the author. If colour illustrations are supplied electronically in either TIFF or EPS format, they may be used in the PDF of the article at no cost to the author, even if this illustration was printed in black and white in the journal. The PDF will appear on the Wiley InterScience site.
Copyright. To enable the publisher to disseminate the author's work to the fullest extent, the author must sign a Copyright Transfer Agreement, transferring copyright in the article from the author to the publisher, and submit the original signed agreement with the article presented for publication. A copy of the agreement to be used (which may be photocopied) can be found in the first issue of each volume of Applied Cognitive Psychology. Copies may also be obtained from the journal editor or publisher, or may be printed from this website.
Further information. Proofs will be sent to the author for checking. This stage is to be used only to correct errors that may have been introduced during the production process. Prompt return of the corrected proofs, preferably within two days of receipt, will minimise the risk of the paper being held over to a later issue. 25 complimentary offprints will be provided to the author who checked the proofs, unless otherwise indicated. Further offprints and copies of the journal may be ordered. There is no page charge to authors.
