Instructions to Authors
Manuscripts should be submitted online at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/aneq. Full instructions and support are available on the site and a user ID and password can be obtained on the first visit. Support can be contacted by phone (434) 817-2040 or via the red 'Get Help Now' link in the top right-hand corner of the screen. If you cannot submit online, please contact the Editorial Office by e-mail at aeq@gse.upenn.edu.
Manuscripts not blinded or formatted according to AAA/AEQ style will be returned.
Manuscripts are accepted for review under the following conditions:
-
The manuscript (formatted as a Word document and blinded for anonymous peer review) should be no more than 35 pages in length (or, for Reflections from the Field or Reflections on the Field, 15-20 pages), with one-inch margins on all sides, and written in English. Page length and spacing include endnotes, references, and any tables or figures; all text should be in 12-point Times New Roman font. All elements of the manuscript (abstract, block quotes, endnotes, references, etc.) must be double spaced. The right margin should not be justified. Pages should be numbered consecutively, including endnotes, references cited, tables, and figures.
-
The same work has not been and will not be published elsewhere nor is presently submitted elsewhere, including translations. All persons listed as authors have given their approval for submission of the article. Copies of letters granting permission to reproduce illustrations, tables, or lengthy quoted passages should be included with the manuscript.
-
All author-identifying information in the body of the text, endnotes, and references must be removed.
-
The first page of the manuscript should contain the article title, a short form of the title as a suggested running head (fewer than 45 characters including spaces and letters), an abstract of 75 words or fewer, and 4-5 key words.
-
Ordinarily the past tense rather than the 'ethnographic present' is more appropriate for describing past fieldwork. It is perfectly acceptable to use first-person pronouns.
-
References cited should begin on a separate page following the endnotes. All references must be cited in text or notes. References cited must follow AAA style, as exemplified in this journal and listed on the AAA website, http://www.aaanet.org/publications/guidelines.cfm.
-
The manuscript should be written according to AAA style guidelines. For punctuation, abbreviations, grammar, compounding, and other matters of style, consult the Chicago Manual of Style (15th edition, University of Chicago Press, 1993); for spelling and hyphenation, consultWebster's Collegiate Dictionary (11th edition, 1993).
-
Tables and figures should be completely understandable independent of the text. Each table and figure must be cited in the text, given a title or caption, and consecutively numbered with Arabic numerals. Tables and figures should be included at the end of the manuscript following the references cited. They may be submitted in color or in B&W. If submitted in color, they will be published in color in the electronic journal but will appear in the printed journal in B&W.
-
Endnotes are discouraged and should be limited or eliminated.
-
Supplementary material (e.g., photos, maps, sound files) may be included with the submission. This supplementary material will be published online only but should be clearly cited in the text. Images can be in color or B&W.
-
Photos and other images should be submitted as .EPS or .TIF files. They should be at least 600 dpi in resolution.
AEQ is a peer-reviewed journal. Our peer review process comprises both an internal review by associate editors and regular internal reviewers and an external review by peer reviewers external to the editorial team. Authors whose papers receive a favorable internal review are given an opportunity to revise before external review. This process, which takes about six months, helps to ensure both quality in the journal and timeliness in the review process.
AEQ publishes original ethnographic research, as well as book reviews and Reflections from/on the Field. Reflections from the Field are short pieces on fieldwork and teaching experiences. Reflections on the Field are concise pieces on key figures and moments. In both cases, Reflections pieces should have field-shaping implications for educational anthropology. Note that articles on the teaching of anthropology normally do not fall within the scope of the journal.
AEQ also reviews proposals for special themed issues. To submit a proposal for a special themed issue, please send a prospectus that includes a detailed description of the overall, tightly focused theme, and titles, author information, and abstracts for all papers to be included. The prospectus may be sent to the editorial office at aeq@gse.upenn.edu. Papers submitted to AEQ as part of a special issue undergo the same two-part peer review process as do regular submissions to the journal.
