Instructions to Authors
Annals of Tourism Research is a social sciences journal focusing upon academic perspectives on tourism. While striving for a balance of theory and application, Annals is ultimately dedicated to developing theoretical constructs and new approaches which further an understanding of tourism. Its strategies are to invite and encourage offerings from various disciplines; to serve as a forum through which these may interact; and thus to expand the frontiers of knowledge by contributing to the literature on tourism social science. To perform its role in the development of a theoretically integrated and methodologically enriched multidisciplinary body of knowledge on tourism, Annals publishes manuscripts dealing with various aspects of this phenomenon. Papers on anthropological, business, economic, educational, environmental, geographic, historical, political, psychological, philosophical, religious, sociological, inter alia, aspects of tourism (including conceptual essays, case studies, and industry -oriented expositions) may be submitted. Purely descriptive manuscripts which do not contribute to the development of knowledge are not considered suitable.
Style: To expedite the review process, all submissions must be prepared according to this format:
Coversheet: It should bear a short informative title/subtitle (50 letters maximum). To facilitate blind review, no names or affiliations appear on this sheet.
Title Page: The article title is repeated on a separate sheet, followed by all authors' names and affiliations, mailing address, as well as telephone and Fax numbers and Email address.
Biographical Note: A 65-word biodata of the author(s) (including the mailing/Email address of the first author) appears at the bottom of the title page.
Abstracts and Keywords: The article abstract (between 110 and 120 words, including keywords) should state concisely what was done and why, what was found, and what was concluded, and end with 4-6 keywords pertinent to the central theme. If the paper is accepted for publication, the author will be requested to submit a French résum?of the abstract (or Annals can make arrangements for its translation).
Text: The paper itself will be composed of three parts: introduction, the study, conclusion. Headed with an appropriate title, the study or the main body of the paper should in turn be divided into subtitled sections. The whole submission should be printed double-spaced on one side of paper only, with ample margins provided, and arranged in the following order: cover sheet, title page, abstract, introduction, the study, conclusion, acknowledgment, reference list, tables, and figures. No footnotes and appendixes can be included. The paper must be written in the third person and all submissions must be in English. The preferred length of a paper is 20-35 pages (about 5,000-9,000 words).
Abbreviations and Terminologies: These should be fully spelled out and defined when first used in the text.
References: In the text, references are cited with parentheses using the author/date style. Examples: (Graburn 1989) or (Dann and Cohen 1991; Smith 1987, 1989). Page numbers for specific points or direct quotations must be given (Graburn 1989:23). The Reference list, placed at the end of the text, must be typed double-spaced in alphabetical order of authors:
Dann, M. 1996 The Language of Tourism: A Sociological Perspective. Wallingford: CAB International. 1999 Writing Out the Tourist in Space and Time. Annals of Tourism Research 26:159-187. Pearce, D. 1999 Tourism in Paris: Studies at the Microscale. Annals of Tourism Research 26:77-97. Sofield, T., and F. Li 1998 Tourism Development and Cultural Policies in China. Annals of Tourism Research 25:362-392. Vukonic, B. 1996 Tourism and Religion. Oxford: Pergamon. Wall, G. 1999 Partnerships Involving Indigenous Peoples in the Management of Heritage Sites. In Tourism and Cultural Conflicts, M. Robinson and P. Boniface, eds., pp. 269-286. Wallingford: CAB International. For format of other types of publications, please see references in a recent issue of Annals. Please note that citations such as "personal communication" should not be included in the reference list, but may be added parenthetically in the text.
Tables and Illustrations: Each table should be typed on a separate sheet. The data in tables should be presented in columns with nonsignificant decimal places omitted. The tables and figures should be ordered in Arabic numerals, followed by very brief descriptive titles. Important details should be footnoted under each table or figure, not in the title. In the text, all illustrations, charts, and maps should be referred to as Figures. They should be provided in camera ready form suitable for reproduction (which may include reduction) without retouching. No tables or figures planned for reproduction can be larger than one page of Annals, preferably ?page or less in size. Good quality printouts on white paper produced in black ink are required. All lettering, graph lines and points on graphs should be sufficiently large and bold to permit reproduction when the diagram has been reduced to a size suitable for inclusion in the journal. Dyeline prints or photocopies are not suitable for reproduction. Do not use any type of shading on computer-generated illustrations. Only a limited number of tables and figures central to the discussion can be accommodated.
Evaluation: Annals is a refereed journal. All manuscripts are evaluated by at least three referees from different disciplines. The paper evaluation, done through a Coordinating Editor, is double-blind/anonymous: neither referees nor the authors are aware of each other's identities.
Copyright and Originality: All authors must sign the "Transfer of Copyright" agreement before the article can be published. This transfer agreement enables Elsevier Ltd to protect the copyrighted material for the authors, but does not relinquish the author's proprietary rights. The copyright transfer covers the exclusive rights to reproduce and distribute the article, including reprints, photographic reproductions, microform or any other reproductions of similar nature and translations, as well as the right to adapt the article for use in conjunction with computer systems and programs, and reproduction or publication in machinereadable form and incorporation in retrieval systems. Authors are responsible for obtaining from the copyright holder permission to reproduce any figures for which copyright exists.
Submissions: Articles may be submitted as email attachments to jafari@uwstout.edu. Keep the layout of the text as simple as possible, but the submission is expected to be crafted/formatted according to the Style of Annals. Always try to keep a backup copy of the paper for reference and safety. No changes to the accepted version are permissable without the explicit approval of the Editor. For further information see http://authors.elsevier.com. A detailed Style checklist can be requested from the Editor of Annals.
