About the journal
Mission
Nauplius is an international journal published by the Brazilian Crustacean Society (SBC) since 1993 without interruption. This journal covers all aspects of crustacean biology, including aquaculture, bioenergetics, biogeography, development, ecology, fishery, morphology, paleontology, physiology, phylogeny and taxonomy.

Nauplius is an international journal published by the Brazilian Crustacean Society (SBC) since 1993 without interruption. Until 2015, original articles were published in two issues per year. Since 2016, publication is continuous (papers are available online shortly after acceptance) and there is one issue per year. This journal covers all aspects of crustacean biology, including aquaculture, bioenergetics, biogeography, development, ecology, fishery, morphology, paleontology, physiology, phylogeny and taxonomy. Review articles with bold proposals showing original conclusions or approaches are encouraged. The manuscripts submitted to this journal must have not been submitted to any other national or international periodical.
It's abbreviated title is Nauplius, which should be used in bibliographies, footnotes and bibliographical references and strips. |

Instructions to Authors
Scope and policy
|
The Nauplius, an electronic open access journal, publishes original research dealing with any aspect of crustacean biology. Papers are published in English only. Since 2016 papers are published as soon as accepted, under a continuous publication system.
When submitting a manuscript, please state that 1) the manuscript has been submitted solely to this journal and is not published, in press, or being considered for publication elsewhere; 2) that all research meets the ethical guidelines, including adherence to the legal requirements of the country where the study was conducted, and 3) that the manuscript is approved by all authors.
All manuscripts published in Nauplius are peer-reviewed for content and presentation by at least two appropriate referees, editorial board and editor. |

All content of the journal, except where identified, is licensed under a Creative Commons attribution-type BY.
Upon publication of the manuscript in Nauplius the authors agree that the copyright is transferred to the Brazilian Crustacean Society. |

Costs
|
There are no page charges or processing fees for authors. In addition, authors will receive a PDF version of the paper for personal use, free of charge. All costs are paid by the Brazilian Crustacean Society (SBC). Authors other than the Society members are welcome to publish their research.
Upon acceptance, authors will receive proofs by PDF attachments to email messages. Authors must correct and approve proofs promptly in accordance with instructions received with the proofs. If proofs are not returned on time, the article may be held or published in its present form. |

Form and preparation of manuscripts
|
All manuscripts should be submitted as .doc or .docx files. The sequence of contents should be:
- Title
- full names of Author(s)
- Address(es) and E-mail(s)
- ORCID numbers of all authors
- Running Head (52 characters)
- Abstract
- Key Words
- Text (Introduction, Material and Methods, Results, and Discussion),
- Acknowledgements
- References
- Captions for Tables and Figures
Figures: Figures should be submitted as separate files(TIF, JPG), using the appropriate forms in the ScholarOne system. Figure captions should be self-explanatory.
Figures will be printed directly from the electronic files sent by authors and should therefore be of high quality. For black and white draw/line artwork, these should be 600 dpi resolution at final size. Half-tone grayscale artwork should be 600 dpi at final size. Color half-tone images should be submitted as 300 dpi. All figures should be labeled with a medium weight sans serif font of an appropriate size to result in 8 point (3.33 mm) type when reduced to single column width. Special attention with the scale bar thickness is necessary.
Tables: Tables should be self-explanatory and submitted as separate files (.doc or .docx) using the appropriate forms in the ScholarOne system. Vertical lines and Roman numerals in the tables should be avoided.
Text Formatting: Please use Times New Roman, size 12, and double-space formatting. Use hyphen between connecting words (e.g., spring-tide, fine-mesh) and en-dash between ranges (e.g., C−F, 33−39) and opposite words (e.g., size-frequency distribution, male-female pair). We recommend checking an article published recently in Nauplius as a guideline.
Running head: Please supply a running head of no more than 52 characters.
Abstract: The abstract should be in English and should not exceed 250 words.
Key words: Provide up to five indexing terms not used in the title.
Taxonomic papers
Requirements of taxonomic and nomenclatural procedures need reasonable consistency in the organization of such papers. Telegraphic style is mandatory for descriptions and diagnoses. Study of articles in recent numbers should be helpful in determining style and format.
Important note
Publications containing the original description of any animal taxa must be cited in the references list.
The establishment of new taxa must follow the requirements of the latest edition of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature. The publication of new taxa in electronic journals is currently allowed by the Code (http://iczn.org/content/electronic-publication-made-available-amendment-code) and the new names proposed in such journals must be registered in the Official Register of Zoological Nomenclature, with ZooBank as its online version (zoobank.org). The Nauplius editorial team offers to the authors free registration of all publications and new taxa in Zoobank. Description of new species-group taxa must cite a type-specimen deposited in an institutional collection. Genus and species name of any animal must be in italics and followed by author and date of publication when first mentioned in the main text. Authors of species name of any other kingdom need not to be given. When mentioning a species for the first time its name must be given in full. After that, the contraction (e.g., A. spinimanus forAchelous spinimanus) should be used. Genbank accession numbers must be included for DNA results such that the raw data can be accessed and compared against the presented data.
References: All papers referred to in the text should be listed alphabetically by the authors’ surname under the heading "References". Use "in press" only when formal acceptance has been granted. Thesis, dissertations, abstracts presented at meetings must not be cited. Authors of quoted unpublished material (e.g., manuscripts under review, internal reports, and certain conference abstracts) should be cited only if strictly necessary. Author of quoted unpublished material should be inserted in the text and designated as "unpublished data; unpubl. data" or "personal communication; pers. comm." but should be omitted from the references list. In the body of the text use: Silva (2006), (Silva, 2006), (Silva and Santos, 2006), (Silva, 2005; 2006; Santos, 2006), (Tab. 1; Tabs. 1, 2), and (Fig. 1; Figs. 1A, B). Do not use "op. cit." and avoid using "apud". Name of periodicals should be given in full and italic. Only the volume of papers published in scientific journals must be provided. Use en-dash (−) for page ranges. For further details please follow the examples below (or check a recently published article), as a guideline:

Short Communications: Short notes are accepted when they present information which cannot be incorporated into a regular paper. These contributions will be subjected to the full editorial process. Manuscripts should be prepared following the same recommendations of regular articles. |

Manuscript submission
Publication Ethics and Publication Malpractice Statement

In order to ensure the high quality of papers published in our journal and promote the scientific progress, authors, reviewers, and editors are advised to follow our Ethical Guidelines.
Authors
All authors should be aware of the following conditions when submitting to our journal:
- The submitted manuscript must have not been previously published elsewhere (except for abstracts, posters, and discussions in conferences, meetings and other related events);
- The manuscript must not be submitted to other journal while under consideration for Nauplius;
- Only original, genuine data must be submitted; any kind of plagiarism is strongly discouraged and will not be accepted. Nauplius currently makes use of iThenticate software to check for plagiarism;
- Any conflict of interest must be declared by the authors upon submission of the manuscript;
- Authors should follow all required institutional ethical demands, and safety board instructions, have a proper sampling license when applied, and respect the relevant ethical and legal aspects that the research requires;
- All authors should approve the submitted manuscript. Changes in authorship, including exclusion/inclusion of authors, are discouraged and will not be accepted. Exceptional requests for changes in authorship should be addressed to the Editorial Board with an appropriate justification;
- Authors are responsible for all information available in the manuscript, including the quality of English writing;
- Finally, all manuscripts must be presented in English. We encourage authors to carefully proofread the manuscript before submission, checking for clarity, conciseness, and grammar. The manuscripts should be presented according to the Nauplius "Instructions to Authors", available at (http://www.scielo.br/revistas/nau/iinstruc.htm).
Reviewers
Peer review is an imperative part of the publication process, and reviewers should be aware of the following best practice guidelines:
- Reviewers should only accept to review manuscripts for which they have proper expertise;
- Reviewers must respect the peer review confidentiality and do not use the information obtained in the manuscript for any purpose, except for that required by the editors;
- Reviewers must declare any potential conflict of interest concerning the manuscript to the Editorial Board.
Editors
Our editors are compromised with the quality of the papers published in our journal. The editors should attempt to meet the best interest of authors, readers, and scientific advance, and also:
- Manuscripts in accordance with the journal standards will be received by the Editor-in-Chief and referred to an Associate Editor, who will send it to at least two reviewers for evaluation;
- The Editor-in-Chief should make sure that all steps required for the quality of the published materials are followed;
- Editors must respect the peer review confidentiality and do not use the information obtained in the manuscript for any purpose;
- The final decision of accepting or rejecting a manuscript is under the Editor's responsibility. |
