About the journal

Aims and scope

The European Zoological Journal (previously Italian Journal of Zoology) is an open access journal devoted to the study of all aspects of basic, comparative and applied protozoan and animal biology at molecular, cellular, tissue, organ, organismal, population, and community-ecosystem level. Papers covering multiple levels of organization and integrative approaches to study animal form, function, development, ecology, evolution and systematics are welcome. First established in 1930 under the name of Il Bollettino di Zoologia, the journal now has an international focus, reflected through its global editorial board, and wide author and readership.

Manuscripts should be submitted in English, and may be in the form of: (a) regular articles, (b) invited reviews, and (c) short commentaries of four printed pages at the maximum. Abstracts and Conference proceedings approved by the UZI Executive Committee are also featured in the journal on an ad-hoc basis.

Now a fully open access journal - this means all articles submitted will, if accepted, be available for anyone to read anywhere, at any time immediately on publication. All submitted papers will continue to be peer reviewed following the current rigorous process. There is no charge on submission.

Authors of accepted papers will pay an article publishing charge of €645 / $730 / £560
.

Please see our guide to Open Access for more information. Many funders mandate publishing your research open access; you can check open access funder policies and mandates here.

Please note that this journal only publishes manuscripts in English.

This journal is published online only.

Article publishing charge

The standard article publishing charge (APC) for this journal is: £560 / US$730 / €645. Depending on your location, these charges may be subject to local taxes.

Find out more about article publishing charges and funding options.

Peer review

Taylor & Francis is committed to peer-review integrity and upholding the highest standards of review. Find out more about what to expect during peer review and read our guidance on publishing ethics.

Preparing your paper

Structure

Manuscripts should be compiled in the following order: title page (including Acknowledgements as well as Funding and grant-awarding bodies); abstract; keywords; main text; acknowledgements; references; appendices (as appropriate); table(s) with caption(s) (on individual pages); figure caption(s) (as a list). Articles to be subdivided into the sections: Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, References, tables, and legends to figures. Results and Discussion may be combined into one section, and a Conclusion Section may be included if desired. In articles dealing with taxonomic descriptions, the Results and Discussion Sections may be changed into Taxonomic Accounts and Conclusive Remarks sections, respectively

Word limits

Please include a word count for your paper.
There are no word limits for articles in this journal.

Style guidelines

Please refer to these style guidelines when preparing your paper, rather than any published articles or a sample copy.

Please use British -ise or British -ize spelling style consistently throughout your manuscript.

Please use double quotation marks, except where "a quotation is 'within' a quotation". Please note that long quotations should be indented without quotation marks.

All authors of a manuscript should include their full names, affiliations, postal addresses, telephone numbers and email addresses on the cover page of the manuscript. One author should be identified as the corresponding author. Please give the affiliation where the research was conducted. If any of the named co-authors moves affiliation during the peer review process, the new affiliation can be given as a footnote. Please note that no changes to affiliation can be made after the manuscript is accepted. Please note that the email address of the corresponding author will normally be displayed in the article PDF (depending on the journal style) and the online article.

For all manuscripts introducing new zoological taxa at family-group level or below:

In order to validate electronic publication of these taxa, you will be prompted to register your manuscript with ZooBank at proof stage. Individual new taxa will not be required for publication, but can be registered by you should you wish. For the ZooBank record to become visible, it must be updated retrospectively with the date of publication. For more information, visit the ZooBank website.

Formatting and templates

Papers may be submitted in Word format only. Figures should be saved separately from the text. To assist you in preparing your paper, we provide formatting templates.

Word templates are available for this journal. Please save the template to your hard drive, ready for use.

If you are not able to use the templates via the links (or if you have any other template queries) please contact us here.

Checklist: what to include

  1. Author details. All authors of a manuscript should include their full name and affiliation on the cover page of the manuscript. Where available, please also include ORCID identifiers and social media handles (Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn). One author will need to be identified as the corresponding author, with their email address normally displayed in the article PDF (depending on the journal) and the online article. Authors’ affiliations are the affiliations where the research was conducted. If any of the named co-authors moves affiliation during the peer-review process, the new affiliation can be given as a footnote. Please note that no changes to affiliation can be made after your paper is accepted. Read more on authorship.
  2. A non-structured abstract of no more than 300 words. Read tips on writing your abstract.
  3. You can opt to include a video abstract with your article. Find out how these can help your work reach a wider audience, and what to think about when filming.
  4. 5 keywords. Read making your article more discoverable, including information on choosing a title and search engine optimization.
  5. Funding details. Please supply all details required by your funding and grant-awarding bodies as follows:

We will deposit all National Institutes of Health or Wellcome Trust-funded papers into PubMedCentral on behalf of authors, meeting the requirements of their respective open access (OA) policies.
