About the journal
Nature Reviews Chemistry is an online-only journal for the weekly publication of Reviews, Perspectives and Comments in all disciplines within chemistry. The journal is part of theNature Reviews portfolio. Learn more about Nature Reviews.
Our Reviews aim to be balanced and objective analyses of the selected topic – with descriptions of relevant scientific literature and discussions that are easy to grasp for recent graduates in any chemistry-related discipline, as well as informing principal investigators and industry-based research scientists of the latest advances. Reviews should provide the authors' insight into future directions and their opinion of the major challenges faced by researchers in the field.
Perspectives – as the name suggests – take a look at a topic from a slightly different angle. They may offer more personal viewpoints, explain the historical background to a topic, or discuss some of the social, ethical or environmental factors related to chemistry research in academia and industry.
Our Comments address topical issues in chemistry — the aim is to cover subjects that are of interest to chemists generally that are not necessarily focussed on the results or practice of chemistry research. This may include, but is not limited to, discussions of education in chemistry and the practicalities of research outside the academic environment.
Reviews, Perspectives and Comments are commissioned by the editorial team.

Free content
Nature Reviews Chemistry is a subscription-based journal, but as a newly-launched title we occasionally make articles free to access in order to showcase our content and give readers and authors a clearer idea of our scope.
Nature Reviews Chemistry does not offer open access licensing options for articles, although specific papers are occasionally made open access when they are deemed to be of exceptional value to the community. The application of an open access licence is at the discretion of the editors; See full licence policy details.
Aims & Scope
Nature Reviews Chemistry aims to cover both the traditional core subjects of the field — organic, inorganic, physical and analytical chemistry — while also providing insight to non-specialists where chemistry is a significant component of interdisciplinary research. These topics may include but are not limited to: chemical biology, chemical physics, materials science and nanotechnology. The journal also aims to bring to the attention of its readers topics beyond academic research with particular focus on chemistry education and research outside the academic environment.
Reviews and Perspectives are commissioned by the editorial team.

Instructions to Authors
Guidelines for authors
Authors with ideas for review topics should contact the editorial team, ideally before embarking on writing. Guidelines for Reviews and guidelines for Perspectives provide information about word and figure limits as well as file type requirements.
We aim to produce chemical structures in a consistent format throughout our articles. Please use the Nature Research Chemical Structures Guide and ChemDraw template to ensure that you prepare your figures in a format that will require minimal changes by our art and production teams. Submit final files as .cdx files.

About the Editors
Chief Editor: Stephen Davey
After working on Nature Chemistry since April 2008, first as an associate and then senior editor, Stephen made the move to Nature Reviews Chemistry in early 2016. During his PhD at the University of Sheffield, and later at Imperial College London, he focused on organic synthesis and catalysis working on chiral nucleophilic organocatalysis. In 2004, he moved to Rijkuniversiteit Groningen in the Netherlands, investigating the synthesis and applications of light-driven molecular motors. In 2006, he joined the Royal Society of Chemistry as assistant editor of Lab on a Chip and the Journal of Environmental Monitoring. He is the launch editor of Nature Reviews Chemistry.
Senior Editor: Gabriella Graziano
Gabriella received her master degree in chemistry from Universitá degli studi di Bari Aldo Moro with a thesis on the interactions between nanomaterials and intramembrane proteins. She then moved to University College London where she obtained her PhD in computational chemistry, focusing on the role of van der Waals interactions and nuclear quantum effects in layered materials. After a brief stay at the University of Cambridge, she returned to UCL, this time to the Earth Sciences department, where she performed computational studies of the melting processes of silicates and metal oxides under extreme conditions. Gabriella joined Springer Nature in June 2016 for the launch of Nature Reviews Chemistry.
Associate Editor: David Schilter
David was educated at The University of Sydney, where he completed B.Sc.(Hons) and Ph.D. degrees in 2004 and 2009, respectively. These studies were followed by postdoctoral work at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (2009-2014) and at the Institute for Basic Science - Center for Multidimensional Carbon Materials at Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (2014-2016), with his research spanning inorganic, organometallic and materials chemistry. David joined Springer Nature in August 2016 for the launch of Nature Reviews Chemistry.
