Instructions to Authors
This journal uses ScholarOne Manuscripts (previously Manuscript Central) to peer review manuscript submissions. Please read the guide for ScholarOne authors before making a submission. Complete guidelines for preparing and submitting your manuscript to this journal are provided below.

Please visit www.tandfeditingservices.com  or our Author Services website for Taylor & Francis Editing Services, offering authors professional English language editing, translation (Chinese, Portuguese, and Spanish), manuscript formatting, and figure preparation through Research Square. Our English Language Editing service connects each author with a skilled native English speaker in their subject area, who will help improve the quality of the English language writing prior to submission. These services make the process of preparing and submitting a manuscript easier, and can provide a smoother process for Editors, reviewers, and the Editorial team.

Please note that Science and Technology for the Built Environment uses CrossCheck™ software to screen papers for unoriginal material. By submitting your paper to Science and Technology for the Built Environment you are agreeing to any necessary originality checks your paper may have to undergo during the peer review and production processes.

Manuscripts submitted to  Science and Technology for the Built Environment should represent original work of lasting significance. They should be submitted exclusively to Science and Technology for the Built Environment, should not be under consideration for publication elsewhere, and should not have been previously published as submitted. Manuscripts must contain at least 50% new content to be considered for publication in Science and Technology for the Built Environment. If a portion of a paper was presented at a conference and included in the proceedings, the original paper must be cited as a reference, and authors must obtain written permission from the conference organization and copyright holder allowing ASHRAE to publish and copyright the new, expanded paper. Finally, the new manuscript must contain a footnote indicating that a portion of the manuscript was published previously.

A manuscript is typically up to 6000 words in length, less space for figures, equations, and tables.  Science and Technology for the Built Environmentalso considers writings—submitted as Technical Notes (1500 word maximum with minimal figures/ tables) and subjected to a streamlined review process—that present research results of lasting significance or considerable short-term impact but do not warrant full-length papers.

Submission Procedures

Manuscript Posting. Authors should submit manuscripts online by posting in the Science and Technology for the Built Environment section at ASHRAE ScholarOne Manuscripts, http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/ashrae.  ScholarOne allows for rapid submission of original and revised manuscripts as well as facilitating the review process and internal communication between authors, editors, and reviewers via a web-based platform. For ScholarOne technical support, you may contact them by e-mail or phone support via http://scholarone.com/services/support.

The following items should be submitted:

  • An original electronic manuscript file in Microsoft Word for Windows (devoid of author information to facilitate a blind review). Multiple-part papers must be labeled as Part I, Part II, etc., in the title.
  • A separate author’s list that includes the mailing address, telephone number, fax number, and e-mail address of the corresponding author; the complete title of the manuscript; and author names in desired order, with ASHRAE membership grade (if applicable), professional designations (e.g., PE, PhD, Peng, DSc, CEng, DrIng, etc.), job titles, affiliations, and addresses (city, state, country) for all authors.
  • An abstract of 100 to 200 words (this should also be included in the body of the paper).
  • Signed ASHRAE Agreement to Publish (copyright transfer) forms, available at http//mc.manuscriptcentral.com/ashrae in the “Instructions & Forms” section, which should be filled out, signed by each author, and uploaded with the file designation “ATP Form.” Each manuscript must be accompanied by a statement that it has not been published elsewhere and that it has not been submitted simultaneously for publication elsewhere. Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyrighted material from other sources and are required to sign an agreement for the transfer of copyright to the publisher. As an author, you are required to secure permission if you want to reproduce any figure, table, or extract from the text of another source. This applies to direct reproduction as well as “derivative reproduction” (where you have created a new figure or table which derives substantially from a copyrighted source). All accepted manuscripts, artwork, and photographs become the property of the publisher. Note: Papers will not be accepted into the review process until these items have been satisfied.

Revised Manuscripts. In order to streamline the process and assist the editors, it is strongly encouraged that a “redlined” version of the revised document be uploaded during the revision process, including a response to the decision letter or reviewers as a separate document.

Manuscript Preparation (See the Author’s Manual and Author’s Template at http//mc.manuscriptcentral.com/ashrae for guidance)

Format. Text should be double-spaced and in a single-column format on 8 1/2 by 11 in. (216 by 279 mm) or A4 sheets, with 1 in. (25 mm) margins.

Sections. Papers generally consist of the title and abstract on the first page, followed by the introduction, body, conclusions, list of nomenclature, and references. Additional sections may include acknowledgment of financial and/or nonfinancial support and appendices.

Abstract. An abstract of 100 to 200 words should concisely state the nature of the research, methods, major findings, and conclusions, with emphasis on significant new contributions to the field.

References. All references to information from other sources must be cited. Use the author-date method for citing references instead of numbering references. The author’s last name and the date of publication are inserted in the text in parentheses. In addition, the complete citations are listed in a References section in alphabetical order, chronologically for a particular author or group of authors. All authors are listed in a Reference list entry (no “et al.”).

Reference Format and Sample:
Sundaresan, S., and R. Radermacher. 2013. Oil return characteristics of refrigerant oils. HVAC&R Research 19(3):57–61.

Footnotes.
Use of footnotes is discouraged, except in tables.

Figures and Tables. Original figures (graphs, charts, drawings) and tables should be submitted. Taylor & Francis does not provide illustration services. See “Upon Acceptance for Publication in Science and Technology for the Built Environment” below for details.

Equations and Formulas.
Each significant equation or formula should be displayed on a separate line. Consecutive equation numbers should be placed in parentheses at the right margin.

Experimental Uncertainty. Reports of experiments should include an estimate of uncertainty and an error analysis. The graphs of experimental results should also show error bars in a clear manner.

Units and Abbreviations. Science and Technology for the Built Environment, as ASHRAE’s international research journal, may publish papers in dual units or, in cases where the original research being reported was conducted in SI units, in SI units only. If both units are submitted, the units in which the work was done should be shown first and the alternative units should follow in parentheses. See ASHRAE's SI for HVAC&R guide at www.ashrae.org/events/page/561. For currency, include the monetary unit of the country where the research is based followed by the US dollar conversion in parentheses. Acronyms and abbreviations should be defined the first time they are used in text.

Commercialism. Commercialism in  Science and Technology for the Built Environment papers is strictly prohibited. Commercialism is defined as the inclusion of text or graphical references to any organization for the promotion or commercial advantage of that organization or the commercial disadvantage of a competing organization. See ASHRAE’s complete commercialism policy at www.ashrae.org/events/page/561.

Author Notification. Authors will be promptly notified of decisions by the editorial review board regarding submitted papers.

Upon Acceptance for Publication in  Science and Technology for the Built EnvironmentFinal submission (after online review and acceptance for publication).

  • Submit a Word file (PDF and LaTex files not accepted) free of Conditional Text, Track Changes, Line Numbers, and Cross-References online at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/ashrae.
  • Tables may be inserted into the text as long as they are alterable tables. Do not submit tables as graphic/image files. Tables in Microsoft Excel are also accepted.
  • Submit figures as separate files; do not insert figures in the Word file. Submit figures as TIF or EPS files in either CMYK mode (for color) or Grayscale mode (for black and white) saved at high resolution (300 dpi or greater) and at least 4 in. in size or greater. Figure files should be clearly labeled (i.e., Figure1.tif, Fig2.tif, etc.). Multiple-part figures should be submitted as one file with all parts included (i.e., do not submit one TIF for part a and a separate TIF for part b of the same figure).
  • Line art is preferred; photographs will be accepted only if they are essential to understanding. If photographs must be included, they must be of high quality (300 dpi resolution or greater) with sharp detail and good contrast and at least 4 in. in size or greater. Submit photographs as TIF files in either CMYK mode (for color) or Grayscale mode (for black and white).
  • Each figure should have a brief legend, as appropriate. Labels on graphs should be capitalized and placed parallel to the axes. Any text included in a figure (except the caption) should be embedded as part of the TIF or EPS image itself (not in a separate text box in Word).
  • Remove color and shading from tables; use patterns instead to distinguish sections. Vertical and horizontal lines should be avoided in tables unless necessary for clarity or organization.
  • Each column in a table should be given a heading. The units of measurement should be set off with a comma (e.g., “Velocity, m/s”).
  • A list of figure captions and table titles should be submitted on a separate page.
  • Each figure and table should be mentioned in the text.
  • Color art will be reproduced in color in the online publication at no additional cost to the author. Color illustrations will also be considered for print publication; however, the author will be required to bear the full cost involved in color art reproduction. Please note that color reprints can only be ordered if print reproduction costs are paid. Print Rates: $900 for the first page of color; $450 per page for the next three pages of color. A custom quote will be provided for articles with more than four pages of color. Art not supplied at a minimum of 300 dpi will not be considered for print.
Accepted Manuscript Online (AMO).  Manuscripts submitted to Science and Technology for the Built Environment are eligible for rapid online posting if a valid copyright form is received and nothing is missing from the paper. The original manuscript will be available on Taylor & Francis Online in a section on the journal’s page entitled “Latest Articles.” Posted papers will be clearly labeled as the “Accepted Author” versions and will include DOI numbers so that the papers can be cited and referenced. Authors will also receive notification from Taylor & Francis when the manuscript is posted, when typeset proofs are available, and once again when the final version is posted. The papers in this section will be removed once the edited and final typeset version is posted online.

Proofs. Page proofs are sent to the designated author. They must be carefully checked and returned within 48 hours of receipt.

Complimentary Policy and Reprints.
Authors for whom we receive a valid email address will be provided an opportunity to purchase reprints of individual articles, or copies of the complete print issue.  These authors will also be given complimentary access to their final article on Taylor & Francis Online.
