About the journal

The Journal of Geophysical Research - Atmospheres is publishing a comprehensive review and synthesis on black carbon and its climate role. This comprehensive manuscript, Bounding the role of black carbon in the climate system: A scientific assessment (10.1002/jgrd.50171), had a large number of reviewers (20) who provided many insights and important perspectives on the paper and suggested important improvements. The overwhelming majority of the reviewers recommended the publication of this paper and returned more than 600 comments, which the authors considered carefully and replied thoughtfully to. The comments were used to update, improve, and clarify the scientific content and presentation in many important ways. It is important to note that one of the coauthors, Steve Ghan, is also an Editor for JGR-Atmospheres. In keeping with journal policy, this Editor played no role in, and had no special access to, the reviews or publication decision-making process.
This comprehensive effort by a team of leading scientists from various complimentary disciplines provides an unprecedented review and assessment of the current state of the science and an impressive effort to quantify the role of black carbon in the climate system. While even such a huge effort cannot account for all recent insights into the science of black carbon, the authors included a large amount of current and updated references, and have aimed for a synthesis of the vast literature into one, consistent manuscript. They also were driven to undertake new research in order to address key gaps that emerged in their evaluation. The result is the most up-to-date assessment of the science of black carbon with new insights and recommendations for future research.
The JGR-Atmospheres Editors decided to provide a platform for this article because we believe that there is great scientific value in reviewing, assessing, and synthesizing a large body of existing literature, and by going beyond the conclusions that any individual paper can reach.
This paper will be of interest to the community and will focus the discussions and future research into black carbon and its importance. Such comprehensive reviews are within the remit of JGR-Atmospheres, even though they depart from the regular format of papers that JGR-Atmospheres commonly publishes. JGR-Atmospheres will consider more submissions of this type, and give them a thorough and comprehensive review in order to publish high quality science with a high impact on science and society. In this regard, we will give preference to unique reviews and assessments that review, evaluate, and synthesize the literature on an important subject in the Atmospheric Sciences and are authored by a multi-institutional team of leading scientists in the field.
