Aims and Scope
Open Biology is a selective, online journal that welcomes original, high-quality research in cell and developmental biology, molecular and structural biology, biochemistry, neuroscience, immunology, microbiology and genetics.
Articles submitted to Open Biology benefit from its broad scope and readership and dedicated media promotion and we also aim for a turnaround time of 4 weeks from submission to first decision.

Selection Criteria
The criteria for acceptance are:
- Original, high quality research of broad interest within cell and developmental biology, molecular and structural biology, biochemistry , neuroscience, immunology, microbiology or genetics
- Compliance with appropriate ethical standards
- Experimental protocols/procedure and statistical analysis performed to a high technical standard
All manuscripts are assigned to a specialist member of the
Editorial Board, who advises the Subject Editor on the suitability of the manuscript for
Open Biology based on scientific quality, interest and importance. Based on this, the Subject Editor decides whether the paper should be rejected or sent for full peer-review.
The Subject Editors are responsible for all final editorial decisions and make these decisions based on the reports received from the referees and Board Members.

Article Processing Charges
We are currently offering an introductory waiver on all article processing charges.
After this period, the article processing charge for authors is $1932/£1200/€1440. Charges are only made if an article is accepted for publication (there is no charge for submission). Prices are subject to VAT, where applicable. Requests for fee waivers will be considered when authors do not have the available funds. See article processing charges FAQs.

Publishing Format
Open Biology is published online only. Along with all Royal Society journals, we are committed to electronic archiving and providing perpetual access - see our Digital Preservation policy.
There is the facility for including Electronic Supplementary Material (ESM). ESM is limited to data and other materials that directly support the main conclusions of a paper but are considered additional or secondary support for the main conclusions. ESM may take the form of supplemental figures, tables, datasets, derivations and videos. The main article must include enough detail to satisfy most non-specialist readers. ESM up to 10MB are placed on the Society's website free of charge. Larger datasets must be deposited in recognised public domain databases by the author - accession numbers must be provided.

Conditions of Publication
Articles must not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere. The main findings of the article should not have been reported in the mass media. Like many journals Open Biology employs a strict media embargo policy where the reporting of a scientific article by the media is embargoed until the day of publication. The Editors have final authority in all matters relating to publication. Please also refer to our Publishing Ethics Policy.
