Aims and Scope
Invertebrate Survival Journal (ISJ) is an international and open access journal devoted to prompt and innovative studies on the basic defense mechanisms in invertebrates, in particular with a view to identifying biotechnologies able to act against derived diseases and related economic damage. Contributions will be mainly in the form of Letters to the Editor, Visions and Perspectives, Short Communications, Technical Reports, Research Reports, Review, Minireview and Reports of Meetings. Letters to the Editor can be commentaries or perspectives on invertebrate defence mechanisms or replies to the data published in ISJ.
Instructions to Authors
Guide for Authors
Submission of Papers Authors are invited to submit their manuscript to the Editorial Office via internet after requesting an uploading code. Click here to request the uploading code. Please do not use "full stop" or "dots" in the file names (e.g. do not upload Ottaviani et al., 2006 but Ottaviani et al, 2006). Submission of a paper implies that it has not been previously published, that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, and that, if accepted, it will not be published elsewhere in the same form in English or in any other language. If you need assistance with online submission or further details for questions concerning manuscript preparation, please contact the Editorial Office prior to submission (e-mail: isj_editorialoffice@unimore.it).
All papers will be peer-reviewed. A publication time of less than 2 months is intended. Authors are required to indicate the names and addresses (including e-mail address) of three scientists able to provide expert review of the submitted manuscripts. Obviously, the editor reserves the right to use these or other reviewers of his choice.
Authors should submit only an electronic copy of their paper in Word (*.doc) format.
Language: Only papers written in English can be accepted.
Preparation of Manuscripts
General: Manuscripts must be typewritten and double-spaced with wide margins. To ensure good quality printouts, Arial 12pt font should be used. For the corresponding author, the complete address (including phone number, fax number and e-mail) is required, while for each co-author the affiliation should be indicated. Authors should consult a recent issue of the journal for style. However, the editor reserves the right to adjust style to certain standards of uniformity. Authors are asked to retain a copy of their manuscript, as responsibility for damage or loss of papers cannot be accepted. Original files are discarded one month after publication.
Paper length: ISJ has set no standard length for papers, but the editor requires a clear presentation of data in as concise a form as is consistent with good reporting. Fragmentation of a report into several short papers is discouraged.
Abstract: The Abstract should not exceed 200 words.
Text: The following order should be used for manuscripts: Title, Authors, Affiliations, Abstract, Keywords (up to six), Main text (Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results and Discussion), Acknowledgements and References. Figures or Tables have not to be inserted into the text.
Units: Units of measure must be clearly indicated.
Symbols: The Latin name must be given for all animal and plant species. Trade names or abbreviations of chemicals may be used only when preceded by the chemical or scientific name. Thereafter, trade names, common names or abbreviations should be used.
Mathematical equations: Compound numbers should be in bold face Arabic numerals or underscored.
References: All publications cited in the text must be presented in a list of references at the end of the manuscript. In the text, indicate the author's name (without initials) and year of publication (e.g. "Since Ottaviani (1993) has shown that…." or "This is in the agreement with previous results (Nappi et al., 2001)"). For more than six authors, list the first six names followed by "et al.". Arrange the list of references alphabetically by author name. The manuscript should be carefully checked to ensure that the spelling of names and dates is exactly the same in the text as in the reference list. References should be given in the following form: Nappi AJ, Carton Y. Cellular immune response and their genetic aspects in Drosophila. In: Brehelin M (ed), Immunity in invertebrates, Springer-Verlag, Berlin, Germany, pp 171-187, 1986. Ottaviani E. The mollusc as a suitable model for mammalian immune-neuroendrocrine investigations. Inv. Surv. J. 1: 2-4, 2004. Taylor RL. A suggested role for the polyphenol-phenoloxidase system in invertebrate immunity. J. Invertebr. Pathol. 14: 427-428, 1969. Leonardi MG, Cappellozza S, de Eguileor M, Grimaldi A, Cappellozza L, Casartelli M, et al. Modification of the nutritional parameters and of midgut biochemical and absorptive functions induced by the IGR fenoxycarb in Bombyx mori larvae. Arch. Insect Biochem. Physiol. 39: 18-35, 1998. Gupta AP. Insect hemocytes. Development, forms, functions and techniques. Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, UK, 1979.
Illustrations: All illustrations should be provided separately as individual JPEG or TIFF files. The resolution of the illustrations should be 300 dpi or higher. Submission of illustrations in ppt format is discouraged. Photographs, charts and diagrams are all to be referred to as "Fig. or Figs" and numbered consecutively in the order to which they are referred.
Tables: Tables should be typed on a separate sheet, numbered consecutively and given of suitable title and legend. Tables should not duplicate results presented elsewhere in the manuscript, (e.g. in graphs).
Proofs: Proofs in the form of a PDF file will be sent to the corresponding author and should be returned via fax to the number +39-059-2055548 or by e-mail within 48 hours of receipt. Corrections should be restricted to typesetting errors. Any other modifications may be charged to the author. Authors are urged to check proofs carefully before return, since the inclusion of late corrections cannot be guaranteed.
Copyright: Copyright on any material sent to ISJ is retained by the author(s).
