Instructions to Authors
Author Guidelines
All submissions to International Transactions in Operational Research are now to be made online using ScholarOne Manuscripts. To submit to the journal go to http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/itor. Full instructions on making your submission are provided at this website. You should receive an e-mail acknowledgement within a few minutes after completing your submission. Thereafter, the system will keep you informed of the progress of your submission through refereeing, any revisions that are required, and a final decision by one of the editors.
All articles submitted to the journal must be original and should in no way violate any existing copyright, and should contain nothing of a libellous or scandalous nature. Copyright in all papers will be transferred to IFORS.
Spelling should conform either to Webster's or to the Concise Oxford Dictionary.
The Editor's decision as to whether a paper is published, and when it appears, is final.
Online Submission
You can now submit your manuscripts to ITOR online at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/itor
Exclusive Licence Form
Authors will be required to sign an Exclusive Licence Form (ELF) for all papers accepted for publication. Signature of the ELF is a condition of publication and papers will not be passed to the publisher for production unless a signed form has been received. Please note that signature of the Exclusive Licence Form does not affect ownership of copyright in the material (government employees need to complete the Author Warranty sections, although copyright in such cases does not need to be assigned). After submission authors will retain the right to publish their paper in various media/circumstances (please see the form for further details). To assist authors an appropriate form will be supplied by the editorial office. Alternatively, authors may like to download a copy of the form here.
Colour Work Agreement
It is the policy of International Transactions in Operational Research for authors to pay the full cost for print reproduction of their colour artwork. (Online colour publication remains free.) Therefore, please note that if there is colour artwork in your manuscript when it is accepted for publication, John Wiley & Sons require you to complete and return a Colour Work Agreement form before your paper can be published. This form can be downloaded as a PDF here. If you are unable to access the internet, or are unable to download the form, please contact the Production Editor at: ITOR@wiley.com and they will be able to email a form to you. Once completed, please return the form to the Production Editor at the address below:

Early View
International Transactions in Operational Research is covered by Wiley-Blackwell’s Early View service. Early View articles are complete full-text articles published online in advance of their publication in a printed issue. Articles are therefore available as soon as they are ready, rather than having to wait for the next scheduled print issue. Early View articles are complete and final. They have been fully reviewed, revised and edited for publication, and the authors’ final corrections have been incorporated. Because they are in final form, no changes can be made after online publication. The nature of Early View articles means that they do not yet have volume, issue or page numbers, so Early View articles cannot be cited in the traditional way. They are therefore given a Digital Object Identifier (DOI), which allows the article to be cited and tracked before it is allocated to an issue. After print publication, the DOI remains valid and can continue to be used to cite and access the article.
Abstracts and Index
An abstract not exceeding 150 words should accompany each manuscript submitted. Authors are also asked to supply a maximum of 10 key words or phrases which will be useful for indexing purposes.
Tables and Figures
Electronic copies of all tables and figures should be included with each copy of the manuscript, and authors should indicate in the text the approximate place where the figure or table is to be placed. Tables and Figures should be numbered consecutively and carry a brief title.
Black and white figures should be supplied in separate files at the end of the manuscript and should not be embedded within the article. Lines should be clean and clear, tints and complex shading should be avoided. Any labels and keys must be legible when reproduced. Figures should either be originated in a drawing package and saved as an EPS or TIF file, or produced in Excel. Line art should be supplied to at least 600dpi and halftones to 300dpi at actual size. Figures should not be embedded into a Word file as this lowers the resolution. Contributors will be asked to resupply their artwork if figures don't meet these specifications.
Where artwork is being supplied, please bear in mind that illustrations cannot be reproduced at more than the size of the text area of the journal page, i.e. 134 x 204 mm. All illustrations should be drawn for the same reduction, ideally 3:2. Lettering should be of draughtsman standard; please bear the reduction in mind in both lettering and weight of line.
It is the contributor's responsibility to clear any necessary copyright permissions, to pay any reproduction feeds charged by the copyright owner, and to provide a list of captions and (where relevant) credit lines. A list of captions to the illustrations, including source information, should be supplied separately from the text, and the position of the illustrations should be clearly indicated in the text. Further details on electronic artwork can be found at http://authorservices.wiley.com/bauthor/illustration.asp.
Literature Citations
Footnotes should be used sparingly, and not used for literature citations. Literature references in the text should be indicated by the author's name and year of publication, e.g. (Jonker, 1984). The page number can be included if appropriate (Govish, 1987, p. 507). Where the author's name is included in the text, it should not be repeated e.g. `Volgenant (1990) says ...' If the bibliography contains more than one work by an author in a given year, suffixes a, b, etc ... may be used.
References
The manuscript should include a reference list containing only those references cited in the text. The references follow Harvard style and should be arranged in alphabetical order according to the surname of the first author. Works by the same author should be listed in order of publication. Each reference should contain full bibliographical details.

Pre-submission English-language Editing
Authors for whom English is a second language may choose to have their manuscript professionally edited before submission to improve the English. A list of independent suppliers of editing services can be found at http://authorservices.wiley.com/bauthor/english_language.asp. All services are paid for and arranged by the author, and use of one of these services does not guarantee acceptance or preference for publication.
Research Instruments
Because of space limitations, questionnaires and other research instruments sometimes may not be fully reproduced in the published paper. When they are not fully reproduced a note must be inserted in the text of the paper indicating the address from which copies of the completed instrument are available.
Author Services
Author Services enables authors to track their article – once it has been accepted – through the production process to publication online and in print. Authors can check the status of their articles online and choose to receive automated e-mails at key stages of production. The author will receive an e-mail with a unique link that enables them to register and have their article automatically added to the system. Please ensure that a complete e-mail address is provided when submitting the manuscript.
