Instructions to Authors
Mammal Study is the official journal of the Mammalogical Society of Japan. It publishes Original Articles, Short Communications and Reviews on all aspects of mammalogy quarterly, written in English. Manuscripts are submitted to qualified referees for critical scientific reviewing. Authors are notified, with referees' comments, on acceptance, rejection or need for revision within three months. The editor also customarily sends accepted manuscripts to qualified reviewers for English editing.

Authors should submit the manuscripts as the following two attached files by E-mail: one is a PDF file including the text, figure legends, figures and tables; the other is a Word file including only the text. Manuscripts as hard copies are also acceptable if authors cannot submit them by E-mail

Form of Manuscript Manuscripts should be typed in the A4 size (21.0 x 29.7 cm) and double-spaced. Each sentence should conclude with a full stop followed by two spaces. An approximately 3 cm margin should be left on all sides. Do not hyphenate words at the right margin. Manuscripts should be arranged in the following order: on the first page, the title, name(s) of author(s) and affiliation, running head (fewer than 40 letters, including spaces), fax number and E-mail address for correspondence; from the second page, abstract (fewer than 200 words) and key words (five words or fewer), main text, acknowledgments, references, figure legends, figures and tables. Titles of papers must be accurate and concise, and (for abstraction services) include any relevant taxonomic name. Text pages should be numbered through from title to references. Manuscripts should be line-numbered, every five lines, in the left margin. Short Communications do not exceed four printed pages. Abstracts and key words are omitted from Short Communications. Do not send original figures until the paper has been accepted.
Measurements, abbreviations and others All measurements should be in metric units. The following abbreviations should be used. Length: km, m, cm, mm, etc.; area: km2, m2, etc.; volume: km3, m3, kl, l, ml, etc.; weight: kg, g, mg, etc.; time: hr, min, sec, etc.; others: cal, kcal, °C, Hz, df, P (probability), SD, SE, CV, etc. Arabic numerals should be used for numbers exceeding 10. Scientific names should be written in italic.
Tables and figures Tables and figures should be simple and self-explanatory, and their preferred locations should be indicated in the right margin of the text.
References References in the text should follow the forms: ˵Uchida and Shiraishi (1985) stated that ... ˶, (Abe and Kawamichi 1990), and (Miura et al. 1993). More than one reference within the same parentheses should be listed chronologically, alphabetically if of the same year. Full references cited must be listed alphabetically by the first author according to the following examples:

Authors are recommended to refer to recent issues of the journal for details of style and layout.
Proofs and reprints Galley proofs will be sent to correspondence authors. Reprints may be purchased in blocks of 50.
