Instructions to Authors
The "Original File" is the manuscript in Word Format. Documents such as Tables, Transfer of Copyright and Figures correspond to the supplementary files. Figures have to be sent in "jpeg" format, not in Power Point.
Contributions should be written in English for one of the following categories:
Case Report: A report of 400-600 words, illustrated by no more than three illustrations. Consists of an introduction, Case Report. Discussion and Conclusions.
Clinical Trial: An article of 700-1200 words concerning a drug evaluation. This category provides rapid publications and is meant to be a succinct presentation with a minimum of graphs and tables.
Editorial: An editorial 700, 1,200 words. The author may express his or her opinion without complete documentation.
Correspondence: Letters to the editor and short notes. Contributions should not exceed 600 words, two figures and ten references.
Education: An article about the methodology of curriculum and instruction in health sciences.
Studies: Original studies includes whenever possible, an Introduction, Materials and Methods or Case Report(s), Results, Comment, and References. A Structured Abstract of not more than 240 words must be included. It should consist of four paragraphs labeled Background, Methods, Results, and Conclusions. It should describe the problem studies, how the study was performed, the main results, and what the author(s) concluded from the results.
Review: By invitation only. A major didactic article that clarifies and summarizes the existing knowledge in a particular field should not be an exhaustive review of the literature, an references should not exceed 50 in number. Tables, diagrams, and selected figures are often helpful. The length is left to the judgement of the author, althought it generally should not exceed 5000 words. Topics may include updates in clinically revelant basic science and biology.
Tropical Medicine Rounds: An physicians dealing with the disease and special use the Case Report or Report format.
Updates in Health Sciences: By invitation only. This contribution to the Journal should be 700-1200 words in length with sufficient references to document important points. It is not essential that the contribution be heavily referenced as it is meant to serve as an update for and is not portrayed to be an extensive or exhaustive review of the literature. No abstract required.
Manuscripts should include a title page bearing the title of the paper, the author(s)�name(s)�degrees, and affiliation(s), the category of the article, the number of figures and tables, and three key words for indexing purposes. The name and full postal address (including a street address), phone and fax numbers and e-mail address of the corresponding author who will be responsible for reading the proofs must also be given on the title page. The author(s) must also declare any affiliation or significant financial involvement in any organizations or entity with a direct financial interest in the subject matter or materials discussed in the manuscript on this page. This includes employment, honoraria, consultancies, or relevant stock ownership. Pages should be numbered. A short title for the Journal's heading is needed. Authors should keep a copy of their manuscript.
Contributions are acceptable for publication on condition that they are submitted exclusively to the Puerto Rico Health Sciences Journal and all authors must give signed consent to publication in a letter sent with the manuscript. The Editor-in-Chief reserves the right to make literary corrections. Authorship implies a substantial contribution. Authors must inform the Editor-in-Chief of any possible conflict of interest capable of influencing their judgment.
Manuscripts will be reviewed by the Editorial Office to make certain that the submission contains all parts. The Editorial Office will NOT accept a submission if the author has not supplied all parts of the manuscript, as outlined in the PRHSJ Instructions for Authors.
Copyright licensing is a condition of publication and papers will not be passed to the publisher for production unless copyright has been licensed. To assist authors an appropriate exclusive license form will be supplied by the editorial office. Alternatively, authors may like to download a copy of the form from the journal website at http://prhsj.rcm.upr.edu
All measurements should be according to the metric system. If confusion could result, please include other measurement systems in parentheses.
All manuscripts should include an Abstract in Spanish.
Refer to patients by number or letters; names or initials should not be used. Photographs of patients must be accompanied by a statement of consent signed by the patient.
References must be listed in the order in which they appear in the manuscript. References from journals should include: (1) name(s) followed by the initials of the author(s) up to four authors: if more than four authors, include the first three authors followed by et al.; (2) title of paper; (3) title of the journal as abbreviated in the Index Medicus; (4) year of publication; (5) volume number; (6) first and final page numbers of the article.
For example:
1. Gibson LE, Daoud MS, Mulller SA, Perry HO. Malignant pyodermal revisited. Mayo Clin Proc 1997;72:734-736. References to books should include: (1) author(s) or editor(s); (2) chapter (if any) book titles; (3) edition, volume, etc.; (4) place of publication; (5) publisher; (6) year; (7) page(s) referred to.
References to books should include: (1) author(s) or editor(s); (2) chapter (if any) book titles; (3) edition, volume, etc.; (4) place of publication; (5) publisher; (6) year; (7) page(s) referred to.
For example:
1. Baran & Dawber’s Diseases of the Nails and their Management, 3rd Ed; Oxford; Blackwell Science, 2001: 38-41
The author is responsible for the accuracy and completeness of all references; incomplete references may result in a delay in publication.
Tables should be typed, double-spaced with a heading, each on a separate sheet, and should only include essential information. Drawings, graphs, and formulas should be submitted on separate pages. Send illustrations as tiff or jpeg files. In the case of photomicrographs the stain type and original magnification should be stated. Each figure should bear a reference number corresponding to similar number in the text. Illustrations that have previously appeared elsewhere must be submitted with a legal release from the holder of their copyrights, usually the original publisher.
In the full-text online edition of the journal, figure legends may be truncated in abbreviated links to the full screen version. Therefore, the first 100 characters of any legend should inform the reader of key aspects of the figure.
