About the journal
Basic information
The Acta Botanica Brasilica is the official publication of the Sociedade Botânica do Brasil - SBB (Botanical Society of Brasil). The journal has been half-yearly published from 1987. In 1998, it will be edited three times a year (3 issues forming one volume: April, August and December), and from 1998 onward, four times a year (4 issues forming one volume: March, June, September and December).
Acta Botanica Brasilica publishes original articles dealing with all areas of basic and applied Botany, in Portuguese, Spanish or English. The research should contemplate theoretical aspects of the subject in question, and be based on a central query that indicates originality and potential interest, keeping in mind the broad spectrum of readers in Brazil and elsewhere.
The abbreviated title, Acta Bot. Bras., should be used in bibliographies, footnotes and bibliographcal references and strips.

Scope
Acta Botanica Brasilica publishes original articles dealing with all areas of basic and applied Botany, in Portuguese, Spanish or English. The research should contemplate theoretical aspects of the subject in question, and be based on a central query that indicates originality and potential interest, keeping in mind the broad spectrum of readers in Brazil and elsewhere.
Instructions to authors of papers to be submitted to the Acta Botanica Brasilica
1. Acta Botanica Brasilica publishes original articles dealing with all areas of basic and applied Botany, in Portuguese, Spanish or English. The research should contemplate theoretical aspects of the subject in question, and be based on a central query that indicates originality and potential interest, keeping in mind the broad spectrum of readers in Brazil and elsewhere.
2. The articles should be concise with at the most 25 typed pages (equivalent to 15 printed pages) including illustrations and tables. Four copies of the paper should also be included with the a 3.5’’ diskette, for revision by the Editorial board. The format must be in Times New Roman, size 12, 1.5 spacing between lines on A4 sized paper, with all margins 1.5 cm, using the Word processing package Microsoft Word for Windows, version 6 or above. All pages should be numbered consecutively. Longer papers might be accepted but the extra-cost should be sponsored by the authors.
3. Latin or Greek words in the title or text, such us in vivo, in vitro, in loco, et al., should be in italics.
4. The title should be centralized and written with only the first letter capitalized.
5. The names of the authors should have only the first letter capitalized, below the title, and justified to the right. References to footnotes should be in Arabic numerals, after the authors’ names, indicating the complete address and data and information about the work (part of a thesis etc.), where necessary, after the title. The footnote should be separated from the main text by a horizontal line.
6. The manuscript format should contain:
- RESUMO and ABSTRACT: Use capitalized letters and bold for these subtitles). It should occupy a single paragraph with about 200 words, followed by up to five keywords besides the title. It should be a concise summary in Portuguese, of the objectives, material and methods, results and conclusions. The same rules apply to the abstract, written in English and followed by the keywords. The English abstract is obligatory and should follow the same rules.
- Introduction: It should have only the first letter capitalized, in bold, justified to the left and give a clear and concise view of: a) revision of studies relevant to the objective of the work; b) issues that lead the author to conduct the research; c) objectives.
- Material and methods: Only the first letter in bold justified to the left and should contain a brief description of the work, enough to permit the research to be repeated, and any techniques published should be cited and not described.
- Results and discussion: It should have the first letter only capitalized, in bold, justified to the left and could contain tables and figures (charts, photographs, drawings, maps and illustrations) only when essentially needed to understand the text. Depending on the work, results and discussion can be joined or presented separately. Tables and Figures should be numbered in independent series, in Arabic numerals placed at the bottom right and should be presented on separate sheets (one for each Table or Figure) at the end of the text (original plus three copies). The Figures should be no more than twice the size that in press. The area available for them, including the legend is 17.5 cm wide and 23.5 cm high, with a scale placed at the left side of the figure.
Numbers and letters should be sufficiently large to be easily legible when reduced. Letters should be placed below and to the right of the drawing.
Photographs should be on glossy black and white paper. Color photos can be accepted by the Editorial Board but the authors should sponsor the costs.
Tables and Figures must be referred to in the text in abbreviated form (singular) with the initial letter in capital (Fig., Tab.).
Abbreviations and symbols, when used for the first time, should be proceeded by their meaning in full. E.g.: Universidade Federal de Penambuco (UFPE); Microscopia Eletrônica de Varredura (MEV). Measures should be abbreviated and a space separates it from the number (eg.: 11 cm; 2,4 µm), except for percentage (e.g. 90%).
For taxonomic and flora work only the botanical vouchers examined which are representative of the taxon in question should be cited in the following order:
COUNTRY (capitalized and bold). State (bold): Municipality, date (the month in roman numerals), phenology (where possible), collector’s name and number (italics), and the herbarium code. Eg: BRASIL. São Paulo: Santo André, 3/XI/1997, fl. fr., Milanez 435 (SP).
In case of more than 3 collectors, cite the first followed by et al. E.g.: Silva et al.
Character keys should be indented and the author’s name of the taxa should not appear. The taxa in the keys when cited in the text, should be numbered in alphabetic order. Example:

The taxonomic treatment should use italics and bold together only for valid names. Basonymes and synonymes should be in italics only. Authors of scientific names should be abbreviated, according to the current taxonomic list of the group (eg. Brummit & Powell 1992, for plant names).

Subtitles within Materials and methods and Results should be written with the initial letter in capital, followed by a dash and the text in the same line. Eg. Study area - localized ....
Results and discussion should include the conclusions.
- Acknowledgements (with the initial letter in capital, bold, and left justified): should be brief, with complete names.
- Bibliographic references
- Within the text: first author, then the date. eg. Silva (1997), Silva & Santos (1997), Silva et al. (1997) or Silva (1993; 1995), Santos (1995; 1997) or (Silva 1975; Santos 1996; Oliveira 1997).
- At the end of the article: the initial letter in capitals, and left justified; in alphabetical and chronological order of the authors; the names of journals and book titles should be written in bold and in full. Examples:
