    Scope and policy

     Horticultura Brasileira is the official journal of the Brazilian Association for Horticultural Science. Horticultura Brasileira publishes papers on vegetable crops, medicinal and condimental herbs, and ornamental plants. Papers  must represent a significant contribution to the scientific and technological development  of these crops. Horticultura Brasileira is published quarterly and accepts and publishes papers in English, Portuguese, and Spanish. For the paper to be eligible for publication, first author must be member of the Brazilian Association for Horticultural Science (ABH) or of a National Horticultural Association which ABH possesses a Reciprocity Agreement with, in both cases with the annual fee paid. In case first author does not fall into the previous categories, papers may be still submitted, regarding that the broad processing fee is paid as soon as the manuscript is considered accepted for reviewing.

    Horticultura Brasileira publishes original papers, which have not been submitted to publication elsewhere. It is implicit that ethical aspects and fully compliance with the copyright laws were observed during the development of the work. From submission up to the end of the reviewing process, partial or total submission elsewhere is forbidden. With the acceptance for publication, publishers acquire full and exclusive copyright for all languages and countries. Unless the publishers grant special permission, no photographic reproductions, microform, andother reproduction of a similar nature may be made of the journal, of individual contributions contained therein or of extracts therefrom.

    Horticultura Brasileira has the following sections:

    1. Invited paper: papers dealing with topics that arouse interest, invited by the Editorial Board;

    2. Letter to the Editor: deals with a subject of general interest. The Editorial Board makes a preliminary evaluation and can accept or reject it, as well as submit it to the reviewing process;

    3. Research: paper describing an original study, carried out under strict scientific methods. The reproducibility of studies should be clearly established;

    4. Scientific Communication: communication or scientific note, reporting field observations or results of the less complex original studies, carried out under strict scientific methods. The reproducibility of studies should be clearly  demonstrated.

    5. Grower's page: original communication or short note describing information readily usable by farmers, as for example, results from studies regarding the evaluation of pesticides or fertilizers, or cultivar comparative performance . Such studies must have been carried out under strict scientific methods and their reproducibility should be clearly  demonstrated;

    6. New Cultivar: communications or scientific notes reporting recent cultivar and germplasm release. It must include information on origin, description, seed availability, and comparative data.

    The reviewing process

    Manuscripts are submitted to the Editorial Board for a preliminary evaluation (scope, adherence to the publication guidelines,  technical quality, scientific relevance, and command of language). The Editorial Board decision ( eligible, not eligible) will be e-mailed to the correspondence author. If modifications are needed, the author may submit a new version. If the manuscript is adequate for reviewing, the Editorial Board forwards it to at least two ad hoc reviewers of the specific research area. As soon as they evaluate the manuscript, it is sent to a related Scientific Editor. The Scientific Editor analyzes the manuscript and forwards it back to the Editorial Board, (1) recommending  for publication, (2) suggesting modifications, or (3) do not recommending for publication.  In situations 1 and 3, the manuscript is reviewed by the Associate Editor, who holds the responsibility for the final decision.  In situation 2, the manuscript is returned to the author(s), who, based on the suggestions, produces a new version, which is forwarded to the Editorial Board. Following, the Scientific Editor checks the new version and recommend  or not for publication. In both cases, it is sent to the Associate Editor, for the final decision. The Editorial Board informs authors about the final decision . No modifications are incorporated to the manuscript without the approval of the author(s). Once the paper is accepted, an electronic copy of the galley proof is sent to the correspondence author who should make any necessary corrections and send it back within 48 hours. Extensive text corrections, whose format and content have already been approved for publication, will not be accepted. Alterations, additions, deletions and editing imply that a new examination of the manuscript will be made by the Editorial Board. Authors are held responsible for any errors and omissions present in the text of the corrected galley proof that has been returned to the Editorial Board. No offprint is supplied.

    The publishing idiom

    In any point of the reviewing process, authors can indicate their Will on publishing in a language other than the one originally used to write the paper, considering that the choice falls into one of the three accepted idioms, namely English, Portuguese, and Spanish. For example: a paper may be submitted and reviewed in Portuguese and, even though, it may be published in English. In this case, authors can either produce a translated version of the approved paper, or authorize the Editorial Board to forward it to translating. If the translated version provided by authors is below the idiomatic standard required for publication, the Editorial Board will redirect the text for specialized reviewing. All costs related to translating and idiomatic reviewing are charged to authors.

    Page charge

    Authors are not charged by page up to the 5th printed page. From the 6 th page ahead, page charge ist US$ 75.000, E$ 50.00 per page.
