About the journal
The International Journal of Speleology is since 1978 the official peer-reviewed scientific journal of the Union International de Spéléologie. Since 1981 it has been publised by the Società Speleologica Italiana.
The International Journal of Speleology is divided into four sections: Botany-Microbiology, Zoology, Geology-Geomorphology, and Abstract-News. The first issue was edited by G. Claus (USA), subsequently two other editors were added: R. Husson (France) and G Nicholas (USA). The first two volumes were published by the J. Kramer Verlag (Germany), follozed by Swets & ZEITLINGER N.V. (The Netherlands).
In 1972 R. Husson became editor in chief and nine volumes were issued in the period 1964 to 1977 until the cost of printing requested a radical change. In 1978 the journal became the official journal of the Union International de Spéléologie and it was published in Italy where the cost of printing was lower.
In 1981 V. Sbordoni (Italy) became editor in chief. In the meantime the Società Speleologica Italiana acquired the property of the journal which was printed with a contribution of the Italian Ministry for Culture and Environment, the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, and the University of Trieste.
In the second half of the 1990s the Museo di Speleologia "V. Rivera" also contributed to the financial support of the journal. The issues of the journal were alternatively dedicated to biospeleology and physical speleology until 1998 when the journal was split into two different series: "A" for Biospeleology (which ceased publication in 2003) and "B" for Physical Speleology.
In addition to the regular issues of the journal, in 1996 a "Manual for Karst water analysis" by W.E. Krawczyk was printed.
Instructions to Authors
- Papers should be submitted by e-mail as attachments (<1 Mbyte) or by ordinary mail on a CD-ROM or a 3.5" diskette. Texts should be typed double spaced using the MS Word program, preferably using Times New Roman 12 pt font, and should not contain figures, tables and photographs.
- Figures and Tables should be sent in separate files (e.g. Fig1.jpg or Fig1.tiff, Tab1.doc or Tab1.xls). For long tables MS Excel should preferably be used (e.g. Tab1.xls). Submission of a paper will be taken to imply that it is unpublished and is not being considered for publication elsewhere.
- Papers should preferably be written in English. Other acceptable languages are French, German, Italian and Spanish. Authors using a language other than their own are requested to have their manuscripts checked for linguistic correctness before submission. SI system units should be used. Dates should be in the form "5 February 1975". Papers written in a language other than English must contain an exhaustive English-language abstract.
- Papers should be headed by a title, the full name(s), business address(es) and e-mail address(es) of the author(s), plus full details of posts held by the author(s) if appropriate. If a paper has more than one author, please underline the name of the person to whom correspondence and proofs should be sent. Regardless of the language of submission all papers should contain at least an English summary giving a detailed synopsis of the paper. An English translation of the title must also be provided in all cases. Three to five keywords should be supplied after the Abstract for indexing purposes and have to be supplemented by geographic definition: Country, Region, Locality. Acknowledgments should be brief and should precede the references.
- Each paper, also those received through the online journal Speleogenesis and Evolution of Karst Aquifers, will be subject to editorial review by at least two independent referees. The Editorial Staff reserves the rights to refuse any manuscript submitted, whether by invitation or otherwise, and to make suggestions and modifications before publication. Submitted papers should be in a final form ready for publication. Correction to proofs should be restricted to printing and editorial errors only. Other than these, the cost of very substantial alterations may be charged to the author(s). It is the responsability of the authors to read the proofs and to note all possible errors.
- Bibliographical references should be listed in alphabetical order at the end of the paper. References should be in the following forms:
- Article: Klimchouk A.B., Andrejchouk V.N. & Turchinov I.I., 1995 - Structural pre-requisites of speleogenesis in gypsum in the Western Ukraine. Kiev: Ukrainian Speleol. Assoc.: 104 p. (Russian and English).
Osborne R.A.L., 2002 - Cave breakdown by vadose weathering. Int. J. Speleol., 31 (1-4): 37-53.
- Book: Jakus L., 1977 - Morphogenetic of karst regions. Akadèmiai Kiadò, Budapest, 453 p.
- Chapter: Martinelli G., 1993 - Radon geochemistry and geophysics in deep fluids in Italy. In: Furlan G. & Tommasino L. (Eds.) - Radon Monitoring in Radioprotection, Environmental and Earth Sciences. World Scientific: 435-453. Palmer A. N. & Palmer M. Huntsville: National Speleological Society: 274-281.
- References should be cited in the text in parentheses, e.g. "(Jones, 1961)" except when the author's name is part of the sentence, e.g. "Jones (1961) has shown that.". When reference is made more than once to the same author and year, a, b, c etc. should be added to the date in the text and in the reference list. For two authors cite in the form (Palmer & Palmer, 2000a); for more than two authors cite in the form (Klimchouk et al., 1995).
- Each table should be supplied in a separate file. Tables should be numbered using Arabic numerals, e.g. "Table 1", etc. Should a table not be an original, a full reference to its previous publication should be quoted. Tables should be supplied with appropriate captions, and kept as simple as possible.
- Figures and photographs should be supplied in separate files and should be kept to a minimum and not duplicate information in tables. Figures should be numbered using Arabic numerals, e.g. "Fig.1", etc. Graphs and diagrams should be suitable for a reduction to the journal format. Authors will be asked to contribute to the cost of excessive illustrations and elaborate tables. Figures and photographs should be supplied with appropriate captions, and kept as simple as possible. Costs of reproducing coloured plates and insets with cave maps are charged to the authors.
- Letters to the Editorial Staff should relate to single topics, provide comment on editorial policy or discuss the content of the International Journal of Speleology, or be responses to comments published in earlier issues of the journal.
- Articles accepted by the Editorial Staff will become the property of the Publisher and may not be reprinted or translated without the written permission of the Publisher.
- The Editor and the Publisher of the International Journal of Speleology are not responsible for the scientific content or other statements provided by the authors of accepted papers.
