About the journal
Exploration Geophysics is published by CSIRO PUBLISHING on behalf of the Australian Society of Exploration Geophysicists (ASEG).
The journal presents significant case histories, advances in data interpretation, and theoretical developments resulting from original research in exploration and applied geophysics. Papers that may have implications for field practice in Australia, even if they report work from other continents, will be welcome. ´Exploration and applied geophysics´ will be interpreted broadly by the editors, so that geotechnical and environmental studies are by no means precluded.
Papers are expected to be of a high standard. Exploration Geophysics uses an international pool of reviewers drawn from industry and academic authorities as selected by the editorial panel.
The journal provides a common meeting ground for geophysicists active in either field studies or basic research

Journal editorial policyExploration Geophysics seeks manuscripts which report the results of significant case histories, reviews, and relevant research in geophysics, with emphasis on application to Australian and similar environments. We interpret ´exploration´ very broadly, so that we welcome papers in geotechnical or environmental disciplines as well as in the more traditional fields of exploration for fuel or metallic resources. Responsibility for all statements made in the journal lies with the authors. Papers accepted become the copyright of Exploration Geophysics, that is, of the Australian Society of Exploration Geophysicists.
Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to use figures and tables previously published in other books or journals. Letters of the copyright holders granting permission should accompany the manuscript. It is also the responsibility of the author to check reproduced materials against the originals for absolute accuracy.
Style of papersAuthors should write any contributions to the journal in English. The style should conform with recently published issues of the journal. Spelling should follow the latest edition of The Macquarie Dictionary. In the case of both spelling and style, we will prefer Australian usage where it differs from the SEG guide. The editorial team will do minor sub-editing to make a manuscript consistent with ´house style´ or to make its contents clearer to the non-specialist reader; if extensive alterations are required, the manuscript will be returned to the author for revision.
ReviewingExploration Geophysics is a fully peer-reviewed journal. Authors are invited to nominate possible reviewers when they submit their manuscripts, to help the editorial team locate appropriate colleagues. The editors retain the right to choose reviewers, however.
Submission procedureTo submit your paper, please use our online journal management system OSPREY, which can be reached directly through this link or from the icon on the journal´s homepage. Choose Exploration Geophysics and log in via the New User box if a first-time user, or use your existing username and password to log in. Choose ´Submit manuscript´ from the menu on the left side of the screen and then follow the steps, providing the information requested under each step.
A covering letter must accompany the submission and should include the names, institutional affiliations, and addresses of all authors, and contact number and email of the corresponding author. Authors should obtain the appropriate clearances from their directors or supervisors before submission. The letter should also contain a statement justifying why the work should be considered for publication in the journal, and that the manuscript has not been published or simultaneously submitted for publication elsewhere. A completed Licence to Publish form (which you will be asked to download from the website as part of the submission process) should be faxed or mailed to the journal as soon as possible after submission.
Preparation of manuscriptsPrepare the manuscript as double-spaced on one side of the paper only, with ample margins. Number all pages consecutively, in the top right-hand corner, including pages with acknowledgements, references, Tables, and Figure legends. Authors should retain one copy of text, tables, and illustrations, as the editor cannot accept responsibility for loss or damage to typescripts. The manuscript should be arranged in the order: title page, abstract, key words, introduction, materials and methods, results, discussion, acknowledgements, references, Tables, Figure legends, equation (copies), Figures.
At the time of writing Exploration Geophysics cannot handle LaTeX files.
Manuscript layoutTwo documents are available to assist authors. The file ´ eg_template.dot´ is a Word document template containing the necessary and sufficient styles for a manuscript for review. The file ´ eg_sampler.doc´ is a Word document containing comments, suggestions, and examples of usage, using the same styles and layout, extending much of what follows.
Title page
The front page of the manuscript should be a title page, showing authors´ names and addresses, with the senior author identified by an asterisk; include phone and fax numbers for the senior author only. The paper´s title should be concise and informative.
Abstract
The abstract of a paper is intended to describe an author´s summary of the paper that is being published and should be informative but brief. There should be no more than 300 words in the abstract. An abstract is not only to provide readers with a convenient summary but also to aid the work of abstracting journals, indexes and researchers. It should therefore contain a factual summary of the contents and conclusions of the papers, note any new information which the paper may contain, but should not include detailed information on methods or statistical data. We will return a manuscript with an abstract which is insufficiently detailed, or which contains too much detail, to the author for revision before it is accepted for publication.
Keywords
Provide a list of 3-10 keywords or short phrases, to assist cross-indexing the paper.
Layout
The body of the paper need not necessarily follow the standard sequence of introduction, materials and methods, etc. However, if an original plan is used, authors should limit the level of headings to three.
MathematicsWe will reproduce mathematics in Exploration Geophysics directly from the mathematical copy prepared by the author. Authors should submit their manuscripts in the usual way with mathematics contained in the text, supplied preferably in Word. (Any characters that are mathematical variables should be typed in italics with constants typed in roman.) Use EquationEditor in Word for equation-setting; Exploration Geophysics editorial staff and printers cannot handle either LaTeX, or other products such as MathType, at this time.
ReferencesReferences should follow the Harvard ´author (date)´ system. When reference is made in the text to a work by three or more authors, the first name followed by et al. should be used on all occasions. References should be listed in alphabetical order at the end of the paper in the standard form: Blackburn, G.J., 1981, Seismic static corrections in irregular or steeply dipping water-bottom environments: Exploration Geophysics, 12, 93-100.
Titles of journals should be given in full, and conform with the latest edition of the World List of Scientific Periodicals. Examples of forms for other citations can be found in the file ´eg_sampler.doc´.
Figures and illustrationsPrepare all figures and illustrations to appear in Exploration Geophysics in digital form, ideally in a vector illustration package such as Corel Draw, Freehand, or Illustrator. Material produced in Microstation is acceptable, provided it is exported to a five-file CMYK EPS format. If colour is required then the CMYK colour model should be used throughout, to be compatible with commercial four-colour process printing. Colour printing will attract handling charges from the printer and it is the journal´s policy to pass this to the authors. A quote can be given on submission of the manuscript.
For the initial submission, please prepare a version of your figures as, or embed within, the common PDF, DOC, RTF, or WPD file formats. This will simplify the review processes. Retain the high-resolution versions as described above. These will be required should your paper be accepted.
All illustrations (including photographs) are classified as figures, and should be numbered consecutively. Authors supplying illustrations that include raster images should ensure that the raster images are high-resolution (300 dpi) CMYK TIFF files wherever possible. Illustrations produced in any other software packages should be saved as PostScript files. For guidance, a raster image to be set at single-column width needs to be at least 1000 pixels wide; for full-page display the image should be 2500 pixels wide. Authors can contact the editor or publisher for further information to assist in meeting these requirements.
Supply each figure in a separate file, when we offer publication. Name each file to coincide with the figure number and manuscript number.
If an author is unable to meet any of these requirements then high-contrast, high-resolution hard copies (laser printed) of the original figures are acceptable, and we will scan them to high resolution at the author´s expense. In this instance, provide the illustrations at 200% of the size to be used within the journal to obtain the best quality for printing.
Where possible, save space by designing figures to suit single column width, and by insetting titles, legends etc., rather than extending edges. Bar scales for maps and photographs are preferred to numerical scales.
Do not add figure numbering to digital or hard copy figures and pictures. Hard copies of figures should be identified (by author and number) on the back in soft pencil. Figure captions should be supplied in a digital, word processing form and must be full and informative.
Colour figures are acceptable when essential to the paper. However, authors will be requested to pay a page charge for the printing of colour figures.
Tables must be numbered with Arabic numerals, containing a legend above each which will adequately describe the table for readers who do not refer to the text. Column headings should be brief, with units of measurement in the column headings in parentheses. Do not use vertical lines to separate columns.
Abbreviations and unitsSI units are preferred. Statistics and measurements should always be given in figures: e.g., 10 mm, except where the number begins a sentence. When the number does not refer to a unit of measurement, it is spelt out, except where the number is greater than nine. Avoid confusing mathematical notation, and particularly subscripts and superscripts; negative exponents or the use of a solidus (i.e., a sloping line separating bracketed numerator and denominator) are acceptable as long as they are used consistently. Capitalise the words ´Figure´ and ´Table´ (first letter) and spell them in full, when referred to in the text.
Page proofsWe will send page proofs to authors as PDF files only, and they must be returned to the editor within three days of receipt. Major alterations to the text and illustrations are accepted only when absolutely necessary.
ReprintsThe publisher will supply a final version of the paper free of charge as a high-resolution PDF file. Authors may purchase hard copies and order them from the publisher when proofs are returned. The hard copies (if ordered) are sent out about three weeks after publication.
