About the journal
The Japan Mendel Society is promoting digitally archive of the aœCytologia? which was published for the Japan Mendel society from 1929 to 1997. This archive includes all previously published materials and will be made freely accessible to public via internet without charge or restriction. In moving forward with this project, the society needs in order to obtain approvals from copyright holders (Japanese Copyright Law Articles 21-28).
With regard to all articles published in the Cytologia?in which ownership of the copyrights is unclear, the society would like to obtain the reproduction rights (Japanese Copyright Law Article 21) and the public transmission rights (Japanese Copyright Law Article 23) from the copyright holders in order to quickly make public these electronic archives so that they are available for research purposes. The copyright holders who wish not to grant reproduction and public transmission rights to the society is requested to contact the society at the address noted below before September 30, 2008. In cases whereby the society is not contacted, processing will be carried out as though permission has been granted.
Please note that the copyright transfer we are requesting is for the sole purpose of making the Cytologia electronically available to the public. Thus, authors may use the subject materials without permission for their own research purposes.

Instructions to Authors
CYTOLOGIA, an international journal of cytogenetics and cell biology, is open to all original contributions in the field of cytology of plants and animals, covering cytomorphology, cytophysiology, physical chemistry of cells and cell constituents, genetic studies of cytological events, research on cells and cell constituents under living and fixed conditions, serology, vital staining, biochemistry and biophysics of cells and tissues, electron microscopy, microdissection, tissue culture, molecular cell biology, microtechniques, and all other research methods. The quality of manuscripts is judged by expert reviewers, and manuscripts are also reviewed by editors or advisory panels. CYTOLOGIA is issued in one volume with four numbers annually.
1. Submission of manuscripts Manuscripts should be sent directly to the Editor-in-Chief by e-mail as attachment files.If a cover letter is needed, it can be attached as a separate file. Manuscripts should be written using Microsoft Word and should contain tables and figures. The figures must be sent separately as JPEG files or GIF files to maintain quality for print. Authors are advised to use a compressed (zip) folder to send the cover letter, the complete manuscript with tables and figures, and separate figures files. The size of the folder should not exceed 10 MB. Files that exceed 10 MB should be sent on CD to the following address by airmail.

If the author does not receive confermation of receipt of the manuscript within a week, please inquire whether the manuscript has been received safely.
2. Preparation of manuscripts a) Manuscripts should be written in English and should be double spaced on one side of white paper of A4 size. Authors are earnestly requested to present the text of their papers as concisely as possible and use figures only where they are actually unavoidable. Manuscripts should be submitted in complete and finished form.
b) Sections should be arranged in the following order: (1) Title page, (2) Summary, (3) Key words, (4)Text, (5) References, (6) Tables, (7) Legends for figures and (8) Figures.
c) The title page should comprise: (1) title of the paper, (2) full name(s) of all author(s) with surname written in capital letters (Shigeyuki KAWANO). (3) institution(s) with address(es), (4) any footnotes referring to the above items (present address, e-mail address of the corresponding author, etc.), (5) running title of less than 50 characters including spaces.
For papers authored by two or more authors, an asterisk should be attached to the name of the corresponding author in superscript, and �Corresponding author�should be written in the footnotes. Authors from different institutions should be identified by the use of superscript Arabic numerals following their name and in front of the institution name.
d) The Summary should state the scope of the work and the principal findings in no more than 250 words. References should not be included.
e)Key words (not more than 6 words or phrases) are written after the summary.
f) Text references should be made by the authors' names (for three or more authors, write as Kuroiwa et al.) followed by the year of publication. Examples: At the beginning of sentence: Darlington and Wylie (1955) reported-------- In the case of more than three authors: Kuroiwa et al. (1981a) indicated that--- At the end of sentence: (Darlington and Wylie 1955, Kuroiwa 1989, Kuroiwa et al. 198la)
g) References should be arranged alphabetically according to the names of author(s) on separate sheets. Each reference should be provided in the following form:

h) Each table should be provided on a separate sheet following the references. Tables should be provided with headings on the same sheet. Vertical lines should not be used in tables.
i) Figures (illustrations and photographs) are printed as non-colored offsets. Illustrations should be made in black ink on white paper. Original photographs suitable for reproduction should be submitted. Lettering should be large enough to permit photographic reduction. Photographs should be glossy prints with strong contrast. Magnifications of figures should be indicated with scales. A list of legends on a separate sheet(s) is required. Colored figures can be printed provided that the author meets the additional cost. In this case, numbers of figures printed as colored offsets should be indicated at the end of title page.
j) Units of measurement should be in SI (Système International d'Unités) as a rule.
k) Manuscripts should carefully be prepared after the style of this journal, please see the recent issues.
3. Proofreading Only one proof is sent to the author. Proofreading should be limited to the correction of typographical errors. Alterations: If at all possible, avoid altering the subject matter of an article after it has been set in type. Setting costs incurred by excess alterations will be charged to the authors.
4. Author's charges The author is requested to pay extra costs in the following cases:
a) If none of the authors is a member of the Mendel Society of Japan or the International Society of Cytology, the authors are expected to pay a reviewing charge of 2,000yen (US$20) for accepted manuscripts. (see 8 for methods of payment).
b) Pages exceeding 8 printed pages.
c) Photographs exceeding 1 printed page.
d) Colore figures and figures larger than 1 printed page.
e) Reprints.
f) Changes made at the proofreading stage except corrections of typographical errors.
g) Charge for extra pages and inserting plates; authors are required to pay 8,500yen for each of pages and 9,000yen for each of plate or plates (per one page).
5. Color Charge If your manuscript contains one or more color illustrations, they will be produced in color at extra cost at the discretion of the editor-in-chief; 40,000 yen for each color page will be charged to the author.
6. Reprints Do not delay ordering your reprints! 20 reprints will be awarded, free of charge, for each contribution. Additional copies are available by order. Orders must be requested before the Journal goes to press.
Delivery and invoices: Reprints are normally shipped 3 weeks after publication of the Journal. Invoices are mailed separately at the time of shipment. In the case of orders chargeable to Institutions, an official Purchase Order must be provided before the reprint shipment can be released. Terms are net cash without discount. Remittance is requested within 90 days from date of shipment.
7. Reprint price list Reprints provide authors with a means of obtaining wider distribution for their work. The prices (in Japanese Yen ) quoted herein are for reprints ordered by and paid for by the author only, or by sponsoring non-profit organization, and apply only if orders are in our possession before the Journal goes to press. The author agrees, on ordering, that the reprints are not for commercial use.

8. Methods of Payment Payment may be made using any of the following methods. IPMO or IGPT is preferred. Payment by check or demand draft is discouraged due to expensive realization rates in Japan. If you prefer bank remittance, our bank account is available as shown below. However, bank remittance typically requires a commission, which would be expensive in the case of overseas remittance.

Note:Please do not send cash in normal postal envelopes. This is illegal in Japan, and the security of cash is not guaranteed. However, at your own risk, we may not be able to reject cash by airmail. We accept Japanese yen only, not dollars or euros. The exchange fee for dollars or euros costs three yen per dollar or six yen per euro. Please let us know the title, authors and issue of your paper if you send cash by post.
