About the journal

ACM Transactions on Algorithms publishes original research of the highest quality dealing with algorithms. It is a peer-reviewed journal, appearing quarterly.

Aims and Scope

ACM Transactions on Algorithms welcomes submissions of original research of the highest quality dealing with algorithms that are inherently discrete and finite, and having mathematical content in a natural way, either in the objective or in the analysis. Most welcome are new algorithms and data structures, new and improved analyses, and complexity results. Specific areas of computation covered by the journal include

  • combinatorial searches and objects;
  • counting;
  • discrete optimization and approximation;
  • randomization;
  • parallel and distributed computation;
  • algorithms for
    • graphs,
    • geometry,
    • arithmetic,
    • number theory,
    • strings;
  • on-line analysis;
  • cryptography;
  • coding;
  • data compression;
  • learning algorithms;
  • methods of algorithmic analysis;
  • discrete algorithms for application areas such as
    • biology,
    • economics,
    • game theory,
    • communication,
    • computer systems and architecture,
    • hardware design,
    • scientific computing

This area list will evolve as the research community explores new areas. In addition to original research articles TALG will include special features appearing from time to time such as invited columns and a problems section.

Instructions to Authors

Criteria for acceptance

ACM Transactions on Algorithms seeks original research papers of lasting value dealing with the mathematical aspects of discrete algorithms. TALG aims to provide coverage of the most significant work in the area of design and analysis of algorithms. Further details can be found by consulting the Aims and Scope statement, the list of Editorial Board members and the Referee Instructions.

Manuscripts must be organized in the standard journal style, including Abstract, Introduction, appropriate technical sections and Bibliography. The Abstract and Introduction taken together must include a clear statement of the research contributions and their significance, as well as a comparison with recent work in the area.

GUIDE TO MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION

Submissions to the TALG is done electronically through http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/talg. Once you are at that site, you will be asked to create an account and password with which you can enter the ACM Manuscript Central manuscript review tracking system. From a drop-down list of journals, choose Transactions on Algorithms and proceed to the Author Center to submit your manuscript and other accompanying files.

You will be asked to create an abstract that will be used throughout the system as a synopsis of your paper. You will also be asked to classify your submission using the ACM Computing Classification System through a link provided at the Author Center. For completeness, please select at least one primary-level classification followed by two secondary-level classifications. To make the process easier, you may cut and paste from the list. Remember, you, the author, know best which area and sub-areas are covered by your paper; in addition to clarifying the area where your paper belongs, classification often helps in quickly identifying suitable reviewers for your paper. So it is important that you provide as thorough a classification of your paper as possible.

For editorial review, the manuscript should be submitted as a PDF or Postscript file.

Questions regarding editorial review process should be directed to the Editorial Assistant (talg@informatik.hu-berlin.de). Questions regarding the post-acceptance production process should be addressed to the Managing Editor, Irma Strolia, atstrolia@hq.acm.org.

Procedures for Accepted Papers

After Acceptance

Once a manuscript is accepted, authors must be certain the final version of their manuscript is uploaded tohttp://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/talg for transmission to ACM for publication. This will prevent any possible version confusion. Author communication will then move from the Associate Editor to someone assigned to the author from the post-acceptance production process at ACM. He/she will contact authors directly regarding copyediting and any changes required to prepare for publication.

The final version of an accepted paper must be formatted using the ACM style files, which can be accessed athttp://www.acm.org/publications/submissions/.

Copyright and Use Agreement

New options for ACM authors to manage rights and permissions for their work: ACM introduces a new publishing license agreement, an updated copyright transfer agreement, and a new author-pays option which allows for perpetual open access through the ACM Digital Library. For more information, visit the ACM Author Rights webpage.

ACM Author-Izer Service

This new service extends ACM's support for self-archiving by enabling authors to generate and post links in their own bibliographies that they maintain on either their personal home page or institutional repository. These links will let any visitors to the author's bibliography pages download the definitive version of the articles for free from the ACM DL. A summary description of the service and instructions for its use may be found at http://www.acm.org/publications/acm-author-izer-service.

Page Charges

ACM no longer collects voluntary page charges.

Referee Instructions

Papers for the Transactions on Algorithms must fall within the scope of the journal. There are three main criteria for a paper to be accepted:

(1) the paper must be among the best papers of the year in its specialized area of algorithmics;
(2) the paper must be of interest to the algorithms community;
(3) the presentation must be clear and effective.

Reviews for all manuscripts submitted to TALG are to be done electronically through http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/talg, unless otherwise instructed by the Associate Editor. The first step is an invitation from the requesting Associate Editor who will provide referees on-line access to the manuscript after an agreement has been made to review. Referee names for each submission are kept confidential, as authors will have access to read only the reviews.
