REGULATIONS

Art.1 (Designation)

The designation of the Committee in English is the Editorial Committee of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery (ATCS).

Art. 2 (Executive Office)

The executive office of the Committee is located in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo.

Art. 3 (Objective)

The objective of the Committee is to acknowledge the research results for thoracic and cardiovascular surgery both in Japan and worldwide and disseminate these to the world.

Art. 4 (Business)

To achieve the goal in the preceding article, the Committee carries out the following business:

  1. Publication of Annals of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery
  2. Other business required for the purpose of achieving the objective set forth in the preceding article.

Art. 5 (Organization)

The Committee consists of editorial committee members recommended (appointed) from the Editorial Committee.

Art. 6 (Editorial Committee Members)

The Committee has the following editorial committee members.

  1. Editorial committee chairman: 1 person
  2. Editorial committee members: a few persons

Art. 7 (Election of Editorial Committee Chairman)

The editorial committee chairman is elected by the committee members.

Art. 8 (Duties of Editorial Committee Members)

  1. The editorial committee chairman represents the Committee and chairs the meetings held by the Committee. He also audits the Committee’s assets as well as performance of operations by the members.
  2. The editorial committee members provide assistance to the committee chairman and take the duty of the chairman in case he/she suffers an accident.

Art. 9 (Compensation)

The members of the Committee do not receive any compensation. Nevertheless, office expenses can be defrayed.

Art. 10 (Meeting)

Meetings of the Committee are attended by the editorial committee members in order to discuss matters regarding job performance of the Committee. The committee chairperson chairs the meeting.

Art. 11 (Cash Budgeting and Balance Settling)

Cash budgeting and balance settling for the Committee is audited by the committee chairman with the approval of the Committee.

Art. 12 (Fiscal Year)

The fiscal year of the Committee starts on April 1st of each year and ends on March 31st of the following year.

Art. 13 (Membership)

  1. Individuals or groups can become members provided they agree with and support the objective of the committee.
  2. Other necessary matters regarding membership will be decided separately upon discussion in the Committee meetings.

Art. 14 (Change in Regulations)

The present regulations cannot be changed unless a resolution is passed with more than half of the votes at the Committee meeting.

Art. 15 (Dissolution)

The Committee cannot be dissolved unless a resolution is passed with more than three quarters of the votes at the Committee meetings.
The assets following resolution are donated to a non-profit organization which conducts a similar business as the Committee.

  • Review Article 10 printed pages (about 8,000 words)
  • Original Article 5 printed pages (about 4,000 words)
  • Case Report 3 printed pages (about 2,400 words)
  • New Methods 3 printed pages (about 2,400 words)
  • Letter to Editor 2 printed pages (about 1,600 words)
    ※ One Page is about 800 words, and one table or figure is approximately 400 words.
    ※ 20,000 JPY per page will be charged for each extra pages.

Editorial Policy

The Annals of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery (ATCS) comprise review articles, original articles, case reports, new methods, letters to the editor, editorial articles, and others. All manuscripts are peer-reviewed.

Copyright

For the transfer of copyright to the publisher of ATCS, the Transfer of Copyright Agreement must be signed by the corresponding author and accompany each manuscript submission. (Download the form "Transfer of Copyright Agreement [PDF]")

Conflict of Interest

When submitting a manuscript, all authors, and your spouse or other immediate family, are required to disclose any financial relationship with a biotechnology manufacturer, a pharmaceutical company, or other commercial entity that has an interest in the subject matter or materials discussed in the manuscript, within the period of 24 months prior to the submission. All disclosures should be disclosed by both 1) submitting the disclosure form with the manuscript at the time of submission and 2) describe in the “Disclosure Statement” section before “References” section in the text as samples in the form. The form should be uploaded onto online submission/peer-review system with manuscript files together.

Informed Consent

Reports describing data obtained from research conducted in human subjects must contain a statement in the Methods section indicating approval by the institutional review board and affirmation that informed consent was obtained from each patient.

Humane Animal Care

All papers reporting experiments using animals must include a statement in the Methods section giving assurance that all animals have received humane care in compliance with the “Principles of Laboratory Animal Care” formulated by the National Society for Medical Research and the “Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals” prepared by the Institute of Laboratory Animal Research (ILAR), published by the National Academies Press (1996 version) <http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK44152/> .

Preparation of Manuscript

It is recommended that each type of article should not exceed the printed pages below. Please also see "publication charges".

  • Review Article 10 printed pages (about 8,000 words)
  • Original Article 5 printed pages (about 4,000 words)
  • Case Report 3 printed pages (about 2,400 words)
  • New Methods 3 printed pages (about 2,400 words)
  • Letter to Editor 2 printed pages (about 1,600 words)
    ※ One printed pages is approximately 800 words. One table or figure is about 400 words .

Text should be typed by double space.

Begin each of the following sections: Title page, Abstract, Main text, Disclosure Statement, References and Figure Legends on a new page, and number the pages. Tables and figures are submitted as separate files.

The sections are developed as follows:

  • 1) Title Page
    The title page should contain the following:
    • Title of the article
    • Name and affiliation of authors (Each manuscript may have up to 7 authors)
    • Name, address, telephone, fax and e-mail address of the corresponding author
    • Manuscript Types: review article, original article, case report, new method, editorial, or others
    • Running title (not more than 50 characters)
  • 2) Abstract
    An abstract should be 200 words for Original Article, 150 words for Case Report and New Methods, and it is recommended to include the following subheadings: Purpose, Methods, Results, and Conclusion. Acronyms are not to be used. Include several key words (up to 5) for indexing.
  • 3) Main text
    The following parts are required:
    • Original Article: Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, and Conclusion
    • Case Report: Introduction, Case Report, Discussion and Conclusion
  • 4) Disclosure Statement
    Follow the instructions in “Conflict of Interest” described earlier in this document.
  • 5) References
    References should be numbered serially in the text and listed, double-spaced, beginning on a separate sheet at the end of the paper in the same numerical order. The Reference format should conform to that set forth in “Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals,” also known as the “Vancouver” style, which recommends sample references maintained by the National Library of Medicine http://www.nlm.nih.gov/bsd/uniform_requirements.html. Journal abbreviations should conform to the style used in the Cumulative Index Medicus. Each reference should include the following:
    For journals—Surname of each author with initial(s), title of article, journal name, date, volume number, and inclusive pages (list all authors when five or less; when six or more, list only five and add et al.)
    Example: Maroto E, Fouron JC, Douste-Blazy MY, Carceller AM, van Doesburg N, et al. Influence of age on wall thickness, cavity dimensions and myocardial contractility of the left ventricle in simple transposition of the great arteries. Circulation 1983; 67: 1311–7.
    For books—Surname of each author with initial(s), chapter title, editor’s name, book title, city of publication, publisher, date, and pages Example: Bugiasky L, Zak R. Biological mechanisms of hypertrophy. In: Fozzard HA, Haber E, Jennings RB, Katz AM, Morgan HE eds.; The Heart and Cardiovascular System. New York: Raven Press, 1986; pp 1491–506.
    • Each type of manuscript has a limitation of the number of references.
      • Review Article: 60 max
      • Original Article: 30 max
      • Case Report: 20 max
      • Editorial: 10 max
      • Letter to the Editor: 10 max
  • 6) Figure legends
    Figure legends begin on a new page after the References. Use Arabic numerals to number legends as they appear in the text. Each figure should be briefly and clearly described. Remarks like “For explanation, see text” should be avoided.
  • 7) Tables and Figures
    Tables: Submit as a separate Excel or MS Word File containing text data without graphic elements. Use Arabic numerals to number tables as they appear in the text and include a Title, placed above the table.
    Figures: Submit figures, photography, graphs or diagrams in MS Word, PowerPoint, JPEG or EPS, numbered consecutively.
    For previously published materials, or other copyrighted materials, please obtain permission, and acknowledge the source of the work in the reference list, table footnote and figure legend. Once you have received permission from the copyright holder, please forward it to atcs@medical-tribune.co.jp.
    Limitation of the number of table and figures:
    • Review Article: not limited
    • Original Article: up to 5
    • Case Report, New Methods, Editorial: up to 3
    • Letter to the Editor: 1

Publication and Charge

Publication

Authors are asked to check proof galley after acceptance. Checking of proofs is the author's responsibility. Please proof carefully and return the corrected pages by email.

Annals of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery is published once every two months.

Charge

Submission and peer-review is free of charge. Once the manuscript is accepted, authors cover the cost of publication charges, color printing and offprints as described below.

  • 1) Publication Charges

  • 2) Color Reproduction Charge
    Authors are required to pay for color printing by page.

    • Print: Authors may select either black/white reproduction for free or color reproduction at cost.
      • General Submission: 100,000 JPY for the first page and 50,000 JPY for each additional page.
      • Invited Articles: 50,000 JPY for each page.
  • 3) Offprints
    Authors may order offprints at 20,000JPY per 50 copies.

  • 4) Priority Publication
    Authors may request rapid publication for 50,000 JPY.
