About the journal

1. Purpose

The Journal of the Korean Astronomical Society is published to promote the original research among astronomers in Korea and elsewhere.

2. Publication Dates

Currently, JKAS is published twice, ends of July and December, each year. However, the frequency and publication dates can change with the number of papers submitted. The Korean Astronomical Society is interested in increasing the frequency. Also, we can publish special issues: the proceedings of the 7th Asian Pacific Regional Meeting held in 1996 was published as a special issue in 1996.

3. Historical Touch

JKAS has started as a sole publication of Korean Astronomical Society in 1967. In the first years, the papers were written both in English and Korean. Because the KAS itself was very small at that time, the number of papers was very small, and the Journal was published once a year. As the community grows, the volume has steadily increased. In 1986, the JKAS has shifted to an English-only publication, as the KAS has started a new publication called The Publication of the Korean Astronomical Society (PKAS) which publishes articles written in either English of Korean (Hangul). The frequency of publication was increased to twice a year in 1989, with the new design of the cover. The size of the journal has also changed from B5 to A4.

The number of papers in JKAS has increased steadily, and reached its local maximum in 1997, thanks to the increasing size of the community as well as research environment in general. However, we saw a drop of papers since then. We attribute this to the general atmosphere in Korea of emphasizing the need to publish papers in internationally recognized journal. In fact, the number of papers published in acclaimed journals such as Astrophysical Journal, Astronomical Journal, Monthly Notices of Royal Astronomical Society, and Astronomy & Astrophysics by member of KAS has been increasing very rapidly since early 1990s. KAS is now facing a difficult task of increasing the quality of JKAS.
Instructions to Authors

Notes to Author

1.General

The Journal of the Korean Astronomical Society is open primarily to original contributions from the entire domain of astronomy, astrophysics, and related fields. All papers communicated for publication in the Journal are submitted to the scrutiny of referees. Four issues of the Journal are published annually,  which constitute one volume, at the ends of March, June, September and December. Page charges are levied on authors or their institutions.

2.Manuscripts

Manuscripts for publication should be written in English, and processed by Latex or TeX. The authors are asked to submit the manuscript to any of the editors by lectronic mail. The Latex or TeX format for Journal can be obtained from the the homepage of the KAS electronic journals. The manuscript should be written clearly and concisely, and include a brief abstract which summarizes the principal points of the article. Key words (up to five) for indexing purposes should be provided following the abstract. Authors are encouraged to use SI units. Originals of illustrations should also be submitted.

3.Illustrations

Figures and graphs should be mentioned in the text and should also be numbered using arabic numerals. On each figure, the top of the figure, name(s) of author(s) and the figure number should be written lightly in soft pencil. A brief descriptive legend should be provided for each figure; these legends should be typed in sequence on manuscript paper, not on the figures. Original drawings and graphs should be drawn with Indian ink on tracing material or smooth white board, or drawn by laser printers using the graphic software. In preparing illustrations, it is helpful to keep in mind that they are reduced. All drafting(lines, symbols, ets.) should be done boldly enough to reproduce well after reduction. Photographs should be clean glossy prints in sharp focus and as rich in contrast as possible.

4.Tables

Tables should be coded with Latex or TeX. Each table should be numbered(use roman numerals) and given a title and descriptive heading, and the units of the  quantities listed would be given at the heads of the columns.

5.References

The bibliography should include only works referred to in the text. References should be listed at the end of the paper in alphabetical order under the first author's name, more than one reference to the same author or team of authors in chronological order; more than one in the same year should have a,b,c added, as necessary. References should contain the names and initials of all authors; year; the abbreviation of the journal according to the IAU Astronomer's Handbook(1970); volume number; first page. References to the literature in the text should be cited by the author and year.

6. Proofs and Reprints

Page proofs will be sent to the authors for checking. Authors are liable for the cost of alterations in excess of 10 percent of the original composition. Reprints up to 50 copies will be supplied to the authors, free of charge.
