Instructions to Authors

1. General

The Journal of Phytopathology (JPH) publishes original scientific articles and short communications on all aspects of phytopathology on the population, organism, physiological, biochemical and molecular genetic level. Only papers containing new and significant information that advance knowledge in a relevant field of phytopathology and are written to a high standard according to the basic formal rules of scientific publishing will be considered for publication. Sequences will only be published when included in papers that clearly establish the importance and function of the gene(s) under study. The journal is eminently suitable for university teachers, researchers in universities, research institutes, and industry as well as for postgraduate and advanced students. The language of publication is English.

2. Submission and Acceptance of Manuscripts

Manuscripts, except those from the USA, Canada and India, should be sent to:

Please submit three hard copies of the manuscript. JPH attempts to keep the review process as short as possible to enable rapid publication of new scientific data. In order to facilitate this process, the names and (email) addresses of at least 4 potential referees whom you consider capable of reviewing your manuscript should be added to the script. Each manuscript must conform to the journal style and should be submitted in its final revised version only after thorough proof reading. After the receipt of the paper, the corresponding author will be informed of its accession number and the name and address of the Editor-in-Chief responsible for the review process. Upon acceptance of the manuscript, you will receive a Manuscript Submission form, which should be completed and returned to the Editor-in-Chief as soon as possible (it must be sent with the approved manuscript to our production department by the Editor-in-Chief). This form includes, among other details, your complete corresponding address, the copyright transfer agreement, and the guidelines for colour print charges.

3. Requirements for Manuscripts

3.1. Format

The language of publication is English.

Each manuscript should include an abstract which should be no longer than 20 lines of 60 characters each for original papers, or 10 lines for short communications. Up to five keywords should be included.

The name of the institution at which the research work was carried out should be quoted in italics at the heading of each paper, followed by the title, the authors' names and the authors' address(es).

Original articles should be divided into Abstract, Introduction, Material and Methods, Results, Discussion and References.

The manuscript should comprise a printout of the text and of all figures and tables. Captions and titles of figures should be given on a separate page. In anticipation of the future online edition, the main information should be presented in the first 60 characters of each caption. Each figure, table, and bibliographic entry must have a reference in the text. For all figures please include reproducible artwork (marked with the author's name, short title, and figure number). Any corrections requested by the reviewer should have already been integrated into the file.

Upon acceptance, revised final versions of manuscripts will be requested on data carriers (diskette, etc.) which must be PC/Windows-compatible and may not contain any files other than those for the current manuscript. Please include a list of the files, noting the file name, the computer programme and its version number. Please do not import the figures into the text file. The text should be prepared using standard software (Microsoft Word, Word Perfect) or saved in rtf format; do not use automated or manual hyphenation. Please do not include footnotes.

For further information please visit
http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/authors/journal.asp.

3.2. Length

Original papers including illustrations, tables and references should not exceed 40 typewritten DIN A4 pages (DIN A4 sheets with a lefthand margin of 4 cm, 30 lines with, double-spaced throughout including all tables, references and figure captions). Short Communications including illustrations, tables and preferences should not exceed five typewritten DIN A4 pages. Short Communications may be given priority of publication.

3.3. Units, Abbreviations and Nomenclature

All measurement specifications must follow the S.I. system. Other abbreviations should only be employed if they are recognised internationally. All biological and chemical terms used should be according to current international nomenclature. Substances or reagents obtained commercially, when first mentioned in the text, must include the name and address of the manufacturer or supplier. Only botanical and zoological terms in Latin are printed in italics. They should be underlined in the manuscript if italic script is not available. The full name must be used when first mentioned in a paper and accompanied in brackets by its abbreviation, which can be used thereafter.

3.4. Illustrations and Tables

The number and size of illustrations and tables should be kept to a minimum. On the reverse of every table or illustration must be noted the number (as quoted in the text and by the caption) and the name of the first author. Photographs or drawings submitted for publication with the manuscript should be of high quality, distinct and well focused. Figures submitted as files should be saved in a neutral data format such as TIFF or EPS, and a printout should always be included. Powerpoint and Word graphics are unsuitable for reproduction. Please do not use any pixel-oriented programmes. Scanned figures (only in TIFF format) should have a resolution of 300 dpi (halftone) or 600 to 1200 dpi (line drawings) in relation to the reproduction size. Please submit the data for figures in black and white. However, colour photos can be reproduced in black and white (with a possible loss of contrast). Figures printed in colour are subject to an additional charge. A single page in colour costs € 571,- plus reproduction costs and VAT. Colour print charges are explained on the manuscript submission form. Colour graphics should be created using the CMYK colour palette (print colours), not RGB (monitor colours). There is a charge for alterations to figures when carried out by the publisher.

Please note that figures will generally be reduced to fit within the column-width or the print area. This means that numbering and lettering must still be readable when reduced (e.g. maps) and that the scale might not correspond with the original (especially micrographs), thereby invalidating references to scale in the text. If a figure is to be cropped, please mark the lines on a photocopy or tracing paper. Printouts should be made with a laser printer at the highest resolution (> 600 dpi). Line drawings should only be contour drawings without halftones (shades of grey). Please do not use patterns; rough hatching is possible.

Graphs with x and y axes should not be enclosed in frames (only 2-dimensional representations are required). Do not forget the labels and units. Captions for the figures should give a precise description of the content and should not be repeated within the figure.

Tables should be created using the table function.

3.5. References

Each original paper should include bibliographical references which should be restricted to a minimum. The list of references should be in alphabetical order of first authors' names. Anonymous articles should be quoted at the beginning of the list.

Each reference should be structured as follows:

Boerema, G. H., W. M. Loerakker, I. Wittern (1986): On the occurrence of Phoma nigrificans (P. Karst) comb. nov. (Teleomorph Didymella macropodii Petrak) on winter rape (Brassica napus L. var. oleifera Metzger). J. Phytopathol. 115, 267-273.

References to books or other nonserial publications should be quoted according to the following example:

Singleton, L., J. Mihail, C. M. Rush (1993): Methods for Research on Soilborne Phytopathogenic Fungi. APS Press, St. Paul, Minnesota.

Unpublished papers should only be included in the list of references if they have already been accepted for publication. They are to be marked as 'in press'.

References to the quoted literature in the text should be given by putting the name(s) of author(s) in brackets, adding the year of publication, e.g.: (Bercks and Bode, 1969). If a paper has two authors, both names should be quoted; in the case of more than two authors, only the first author's name is to be quoted, followed by et al. .

4. Copyright

Papers can only be published in the journal on the condition that the manuscript has not been published or submitted for publication elsewhere. Upon submission of the manuscript to the publisher, the author certifies that neither his contribution nor any foreign text or figures contained therein that he procures infringe upon the rights of a third party, and that he alone is authorized to dispose of the existing right of utilization with regard to copyright. The author will refrain from any other duplication and distribution or digital transfer and reproduction (e.g. on the Internet) during the period of the contract. For the duration of the lawful copyright, the author grants the publisher regardless of location the exclusive right of duplication and dissemination (right of publication) without restriction as to the intangible reproduction of the article, the right to make the article available to any individual online as well as the right of issuance of licenses to third parties nationally and abroad for the exercise of the granted ancillary rights. The publisher is authorized to make use of the utilization rights to which he is entitled, however, he is not obligated to do so.

5. Proof Correction and Offprints

Proofs will be sent via e-mail as an Acrobat PDF (portable document format) file. The e-mail server must be able to accept attachments up to 4 MB in size. Acrobat Reader will be required in order to read this file. This software can be downloaded (free of charge) from the following Web site:
www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

This will enable the file to be opened, read on screen, and printed out in order for any corrections to be added. Further instructions will be sent with the proof. Proofs will be posted if no e-mail address is available; in your absence, please arrange for a colleague to access your e-mail to retrieve the proofs.

Proofs of the paper should be corrected, signed and returned without delay. Please ensure that you can be contacted during this time. As changes to proofs are costly, we ask you to only correct typesetting errors.

You will receive 25 offprints free of charge. Additional offprints can be ordered on the Offprint order form you will receive together with the proofs. Orders placed later are subject to a higher charge. Offprints and complimentary copies will be sent to the corresponding or first-named author for distribution, unless otherwise noted on the form.

6. Book Reviews

Books submitted for review are forwarded by an editor-in-chief to appropriate specialists for review. The review copy remains property of the reviewer, but no royalty is paid. At the beginning of each book review, precise bibliographic details must be provided. Please use the system of punctuation as in the following example:

Singleton, L. L., J. Mihail, and C. M. Rush (eds), Methods for Research on Soilborne Phytopathogenic Fungi. St. Paul, Minnesota: APS Press, 1993. 265 pp., 125 figs, 24 tables, US$ 34.00 ISBN 0890541272.

The editors and publishers attempt to publish articles accepted for the Journal of Phytopathology with all possible expediency. They therefore request that all authors pay close attention to the recommendations provided in the 'Guidelines for Contributors'.
