About the journal

Founded in 1960 at the Institute of Plant Genetics in Poznan as Genetica Polonica, in 1995 renamed as the Journal of Applied Genetics (JAG). It publishes original papers, short communications (including case reports) and review articles on plant, human, animal and microbial genetics.

INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS

JOURNAL OF APPLIED GENETICS publishes original papers, short communications (including case reports) and review articles on plant, human and animal genetics. The Journal is also open to papers on microbial genetics.
The manuscript should be written in English (preferably in British English). Authors are encouraged to submit manuscripts by e-mail to mpie@igr.poznan.pl. Otherwise, one printed copy and a diskette or CD with the files should be sent to the Editorial Office. The text and tables should be saved in MSWord or RTF format (IBM PC), while figures, in JPEG or TIF format.
Submission of an article implies that the work described has not been published previously (except in the form of an abstract) and that is not under consideration elsewhere. The editors will do their best to inform the authors if the manuscript is accepted or rejected within a month of receipt.
The length of the manuscript (A4 format, double-spaced, with all margins 3-4 cm) should not exceed: 15 pages for an original paper, 20 pages for a review article and 5 pages for a short communication. The first page must include the full name of the institution and the forename(s) and surname of the author to whom proofs and all correspondence will be sent, together with his/her full postal address, telephone and fax numbers and e-mail address.
The submitted manuscripts are evaluated by reviewers. Every item is checked for style and grammar. The editors reserve the right to introduce corrections suggested by the journal s copy editor. The final version must be sent on a floppy disc (Word for Windows - only in the IBM PC format).
Each original paper should principally contain the following items: (1) Title, authors names and the name of the institution where the study was carried out; (2) Abstract; (3) Key words; (4) Introduction; (5) Materials and methods; (6) Results; (7) Discussion; (8) Conclusions; (9) Acknowledgements; (10) References. Short communications and case reports should be composed of an abstract, the main body of the article (not subdivided), references and no more than one figure and/or one table.
The title should describe the contents of the paper as briefly as possible. A short running title not exceeding 45 characters, (including spaces) is also required.
The abstract should give concise information on the significant content and conclusions of the paper in a form suitable for abstracting journals. It should not exceed 250 words.
Key words - up to seven, should be arranged in alphabetical order and cover complete scientific names of all the studied organisms, the topic investigated and any special technique used.
Abbreviations should be explained when they first appear in the text. Otherwise, only SI units and abbreviations should be used.
Tables require captions and should be comprehensible without reference to the text.
Graphs should be provided in Exel and they should be stored with original data. Autotypes (black and white ones are preferred) should be submitted in JPG format or TIF format with a resolution of no less than 300 dpi (at reproduction size). Diagrams and photographs should be referred to as "Figure" in the text and numbered consecutively throughout the paper. A guide to the appropriate position of each figure and table should be indicated on the margin of the text. Captions and legends to all figures should be typed on a separate sheet. Colour illustrations cost about 50 euro per printed page.
References should include only published works, preferably those written in English. Citations of personal communications and unpublished results (including theses) must be avoided, unless absolutely necessary. Such citations may not appear in the reference list but only in the text as: (W. Black, pers. comm.) or (T. White 1998. Thesis, Univ. of California, Davis, CA, USA). Literature references need to be arranged alphabetically according to the first author, for example:
Bai GH, Shaner G, Ohm H, 2000. Inheritance of resistance to Fusarium graminearum in wheat. Theor Appl Genet 100: 1-8.
Falconer DS, Whyatt A, 1981. Introduction to quantitative genetics. 2nd edn. London: Longman.
Kowalski JW, 1995. Clustering of highly expressed genes in rice chromosomal domains. In: Lincoln SE, Bowen D, eds. Genetic markers in plant breeding. Dordrecht: Kluwer Acad Publ: 553-560.
Journal titles should be abbreviated according to the World List of Scientific Periodicals (or full if in doubt).
Galley proofs for correction will be sent to authors only once. Proof corrections must be marked as clearly as possible and should be returned within seven days on receipt. Twenty-five offprints will be provided free of charge.
Copyright. Upon acceptance of an article, authors will be asked to transfer copyright of the article to the Publisher. This will ensure the widest possible dissemination of information under copyright laws.
Permissions. Authors must obtain written permission from copyright owners for reprinting of figures, tables or text. A written permission is also necessary for a quotation from unpublished material.
