About the journal

Neuroinformatics publishes original articles and reviews in the new field of neuroinformatics. The emphasis is on data structure and software tools related to analysis, modeling, integration, and sharing, in all areas of neuroscience research. In particular, we invite contributions on: (1) Theory and methodology, including discussions on ontologies, modeling approaches, database design and meta-analyses; (2) Descriptions of developed databases and software tools, and of the methods for their distribution; (3) Relevant experimental results, such as reports accompanied by the release of massive data sets; (4) Computational simulations of models integrating and organizing complex data; and (5) Neuroengineering approaches, including hardware, robotics, and information theory studies. The journal also publishes independent "tests and evaluations" of available neuroscience databases and software tools and fosters a commitment to the principles of tool and data sharing. The journal is published quarterly both in print and online. The online version includes additional electronic material such as demos, animations, and internet links. All the electronic issues of at least the first year of publication will be freely available.
Instructions to Authors
Submitting a paper for review:
Submissions may be made online using Humana Press' JASPER electronic submission site at http://submit.humanajournals.com.
Criteria for Authorship
The criteria for authorship adopted by Neuroinformatics are set by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (www.icmje.org) at http://www.icmje.org/index.html#authorship
Specifically, authorship credit should be based only on 1) substantial contributions to conception and design, or acquisition of data, or analysis and interpretation of data; 2) drafting the article or revising it critically for important intellectual content; and 3) final approval of the version to be published. Conditions 1, 2, and 3 must all be met.
Acquisition of funding, the collection of data, feedback on the manuscript, or general supervision of the research group, by themselves, do not justify authorship.
Submitting a finalized paper for publication
Accepted Original Research Papers, Review Articles, Software and Database Product Reviews, and Editorial Meeting Reports (with any or all of the following: Abstracts, Index Entries/Key Words, Artwork, Computer Graphics, Color Art, Original Multimedia, Tables and References) must be formatted as follows:
Type manuscript in English, please enclose a cover letter including the corresponding author's complete address, email addresses, telephone and fax numbers, and provide full first and last names and full affiliations for all authors.Type manuscript double-spaced on one side of consecutively numbered pages with 1- to 1-1/2 in. margins. Include all figures and tables. Pages should be numbered beginning with the title page. Each manuscript should include an acknowledgments section that contains all personal acknowledgments and lists of grant support. Include a disk version of the manuscript (3.5" floppy disk or 100 mb Zip disk, PC or Mac formatted). Please indicate the word processing program, the type of computer, and the operating system used to generate the file. Manuscripts and electronic versions must match. Revised electronic versions cannot be submitted without a corresponding reprinted manuscript.
All manuscripts submitted must be accompanied by a signed statement indicating that the article is original, is not under consideration, has not been published previously elsewhere, and that its content has not been anticipated by any previous publication.
Abstracts should not exceed 250 words and should state the study's research objectives, methods, results, and significance.
Include 5-10 index entries/key words. Also include a suggested running head (maximum of 40 characters).
Illustrations: Number figures consecutively with Arabic numerals, callouts (if any) should be cap letters. All figures must be cited in text; efforts will be made to place the figure as close as possible to the first text citation. Include figure captions on a separate, numbered manuscript sheet. Define all symbols and abbreviations used in the figure. All illustrations, including chemical structures, must be provided in professional-quality, finished form ready for direct reproduction without revision by us. Number figures consecutively with Arabic numerals, callouts (if any) should be capital letters. Include figure captions. Photographs should be glossy prints of high quality and with strong contrasts. Additional specifications apply regarding Computer Graphics and Color Art.
Computer Graphics: If your submission includes Computer Graphics, acceptable software formats are: Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop versions 5 and up. File formats are as follows: EPS (Encapsulated Postscript), TIF, JPEG (low-compression/high-quality), and those native software formats listed above. Unfortunately we cannot accept Microsoft PowerPoint files at this time. All computer graphic file submissions must be accompanied by a hard copy printout. All computer figures and printouts must match.
dpi specifications: line art should be no less than 1200 dpi; halftone scans should be 300 dpi.
Color Art: Color art cannot be accepted unless the author is willing to assume the additional costs involved in production (quotes given on request). All color art must adhere to the guidelines under Computer Graphics. Color art must be prepared in CMYK color mode.
If your submission includes original multimedia, not posted elsewhere on the internet, it will be considered for publication if its content adds to the understanding of one's accepted article. The item should be submitted on disk in MPEG format, and should not exceed 5Megs. If the item is posted elsewhere, please provide a URL.
If your submission includes tables, they should be typed on separate sheets and numbered consecutively with Arabic numbers. Tables should be self-explanatory and include a brief descriptive title. Footnotes to tables indicated by lower case letters are acceptable, but they should not contain extensive experimental detail.
If your submission includes references, they should be cited in the text by author and year (Brown, 1993); multiple citations should be in chronological order, alphabetical order for references within the same year (Smith, 1991; Brown, 1992; Jones, 1992). List at the end of the paper in alphabetical order. Abbreviations of journal names should follow those listed in Index Medicus. Follow style indicated below.
