Guidelines for Abstract Preparation
Use a short descriptive title. Limit title to 10 words. Do not use abbreviations or acronyms. The abstract must meet standards for publication in a peer-reviewed professional journal.
Background: Brief introduction, statement of objectives or hypothesis
Research Design: Setting, study design, duration of follow-up, designated outcomes
Methods: Study population, selection criteria, essential features of interventions/
observations, statistical analysis
Results: Data analysis should indicate findings in narrative (rather than tabular format), confidence intervals, and statistical significance
Conclusion(s): Must be supported by evidence, include clinical relevance, and clinical applications

Abstracts accepted for presentation will not be returned for any further editing or proofing. Authors are responsible for ensuring that the text is accurate, professionally concise, and as clear as possible. For research studies, the abstract must be structured using the listed subheadings, following the guidelines for recommended content. Include any sources of funding. Do not include a bibliography or references.
The abstract should not exceed 300 words.
Include the institutional affiliation of the first author.
If accepted for presentation, research abstracts will be considered for publication in The Journal of Spinal Cord Medicine, the official journal of APS, pending review and compliance with abstract authorship guidelines. Generally, abstracts describing data-based original research are published. Abstracts for instructional courses will not be published
Avoid general statements such as “the results of the study will be presented?or “the significance of the data will be discussed.?Abstracts on completed research that do not include data analysis will not be accepted for presentation.
Case presentations are encouraged to utilize a format that includes: objectives, design (case presentation), results, and conclusions. Narrative abstracts will be considered if a concise description of the following information is included: demographics, clinical course, unique characteristics, treatment/intervention, results/outcome, and
clinical significance.
In the text, an abbreviated word or term must be spelled out at first use, with its abbreviation or acronym in parentheses.
No changes in content are permitted after January 6, 2006.

Conference Presentation Formats
Paper: Presentations may be on research or clinical issues or a case study, up to 30 minutes in length, with allotted time for questions and discussion. These are grouped in 60- to 90-minute time blocks according to topic similarities. Members of the Board of Directors and Program Committee serve as moderators. Papers presented at other conferences will be considered, provided that the material has not been published as a full manuscript.

Instructional or Research Symposia: Scheduled for up to 120 minutes, a symposium involves multiple presenters oriented around a central theme. The organizer of a symposium serves as the moderator. The Program Committee apportions symposium time slots to these sessions.

State-of-the-Art Lecture: An invited presentation established by the Program Committee. The purpose is to provide a comprehensive review of current information on a selected subject. Presentation is up to 90 minutes.

Focus Session:  A 45-minute block of time for in-depth discussion of a topic by leading authorities. Attendees are practitioners in the field and participate in a group discussion.
Donald Munro Lecture: An invited presentation established by the Board of Directors to honor the memory and distinguished service of Dr. Munro, a pioneer in the field of SCI. Presentation is up to 60 minutes.

James J. Peters Lecture: An invited presentation established by the Board of Directors to honor the commitment and dedication of James J. Peters to improving the quality of life of persons with SCI through rehabilitation, research, legislative action, advocacy, and disability rights. Presentation is up to 60 minutes.

Ernest Bors Award Presentation: An invited presentation established by the Editorial Board to honor the lifelong commitment of Dr. Bors to SCI research and education. The Editorial Board selects the recipient of the Ernest Bors Award for Scientific Development based upon a published manuscript of original work in The Journal of Spinal Cord Medicine. The presentation is given by the award recipient. The presentation is up to 30 minutes.

Poster: A visual exhibit where presenters have the opportunity to discuss with conferees pertinent issues highlighted in the poster. Viewing sessions are scheduled throughout the first 2 days of the conference. Presenters must be available during the evening viewing sessions.

APS Symposium Guidelines
A symposium contains a series of presentations on different aspects of a central theme, organized by a moderator who presents an overview of the topic at the beginning of the symposium and leads the discussion following the presentations.
The presentations are an integration of findings, theories, and concepts. Symposium participants should be knowledgeable and represent several disciplines.
The moderator must obtain a commitment from the participants to attend the conference prior to submitting any abstracts.
The moderator prepares an abstract of the overall subject of the symposium.
Individual presenters participating in the symposium must submit their respective abstracts electronically. The abstract must indicate the title of the symposium and the name of the moderator.
Each abstract should contain elements for publication: Background, Research Design, Methods, Results, and Conclusions.
The time allotment for the symposium will be equally distributed among the presenters with 15 minutes at the end reserved for discussion.

Poster Guidelines
A poster is a visual presentation of a topic using charts, graphs, illustrations, and photographs to supplement a written narrative. The topic may be research- or clinically-based, or describe new techniques, procedures, or technology.
It provides a forum for
one-to-one discussion with the presenter.
The presenter (primary author) must be available at designated times, as specified in the program, to discuss information with conferees.
The poster should be self-explanatory; the presenter may supplement particular points raised by conferees.
The presenter must be available for set-up and tear-down at times designated in the conference program.
The poster board is 4 feet high by 8 feet wide. Posters are assigned a number as indicated in the program.
Signage with lettering a minimum of 11/2 inches high should be affixed at the top of the poster board indicating:
 * Abstract title
 * Author(s)
 * Institutional affiliation of the author(s)
The abstract must contain all of the following elements: Objectives, Problem Statement, Methods, Data Analysis, Significance and Conclusion. It must also include a source of funding statement, if applicable.

Graphic materials, tables, and illustrations should be as simple as possible. Sequence the viewing of the poster with arrows, letters, or numbers so it is self-explanatory. Graphics and illustrations should be readable from a distance of 4 feet. Lettering must be at least 1 inch high and in boldface print. Avoid typewritten or freehand lettering. Design the illustrations as you would for a slide presentation.
Handouts are desirable supplements to poster presentations.
Audiovisual equipment and electrical outlets are not available.
Bring pushpins or thumbtacks for mounting the poster.

All submissions are evaluated and rated by the Program Committee on the basis of the following criteria:
Relevance to the theme of the conference
 Clearly defined topic and objectives
 Overall scientific merit
 Relevance to a multi-specialty audience
 Clinical relevance and/or practical application
Originality, including new concepts or new data
