About the journal

About the Journal of Insect Science

The Journal of Insect Science publishes papers in all aspects of the biology of insects and other arthropods from the molecular to the ecological. The Journal is published on the World Wide Web by the University of Wisconsin Library. Our guiding principle is that academic institutions should be involved in publishing scholarly work with as few impediments as possible to free access to information. Read more about this in the Editor's Call for Change in Academic Publishing.

The Journal of Insect Science is supported by the University of Wisconsin Library and is freely available to individuals and institutions. It provides an alternative to excessively priced commercial publications in insect biology. It is the vehicle of choice for the publication of high-quality, rigorously refereed reports on the biology of insects and other arthropods.

The Journal of Insect Science has an international scope with a broad constituency of scientists interested in the biology of insects and their agricultural and medical impact. The Journal has an Advisory Board that provided advice as the journal was established. Members of the Editorial Board assist the Editor in choice of reviewers, and resolving disputes about manuscripts The Journal of Insect Science uses the Creative Commons Attribution License for copyright. The University of Wisconsin Library will maintain the journal in its archives.

The on-line format makes inclusion of color figures, videos and sound possible at no cost to the author. Large data sets, statistical analyses and computerized sequence analyses can be attached to papers. Demonstration of online capabilities.

The Journal of Insect Science will offer links to the homepages of individual scholars in the field ("Scholar’s Homepages"). Published papers are included in PubMed Central and BioOne, which will guarantee wide visibility for your paper and provide reference links to full text articles. JIS is indexed by ISI, Index Medicus, Current Contents, CSA, CAB, CAS, Biosis, and Academic Info, and Agricola. It will appear in Medline. A description of these indexing services is found at "Scientific Resources that include JIS". The Journal of Insect Science is a "Leading Edge" Partner of SPARC (The Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition), which is an association of 180 academic libraries dedicated to encouraging alternatives to commercial publishing of academic work.

We welcome your comments or suggestions. Please e-mail us at JIS@insectscience.org.

Instructions to Authors

The Journal of Insect Science is accepting submissions of manuscripts for publication. There is no charge for publishing in JIS. Color figures are free as are other forms of data presentation. You can submit your manuscript electronically, as an attachment to an e-mail message, or you can submit it by post. If you choose the latter, please include a diskette or zip disk with the electronic version of the manuscript.

SUBMISSION OF FIGURES
Figures must be sent in the proper format as described below:
All figures should be submitted as 350dpi TIFFs.
Half page figures should be between 3 and 3.9 inches wide.
Full page figures should be between 6 and 8 inches wide.
Color images should be in RGB 24-bit or CMYK format.
Black and white halftones should be in 256 Gray (8-bit grayscale).
Please note that figures must be sent in as separate files, i.e., not part of the manuscript.

DNA & RNA SEQUENCES
DNA and RNA sequences should be submitted as Rich Text Format (rtf) files using Courier font. When these sequences are submitted as images, we are not able to produce quality reproductions.

SUBMISSION OF TABLES
In order to ensure that table information is transferred accurately from the time of submission to the time of publication, we require that tables be submitted using one of the following software applications:

Microsoft Excel
SUBMISSION OF SOUND AND VIDEO
If you wish to submit sound or video please contact the Editor for instructions. Demonstration of online capabilities.

SUBMISSION OF LARGE DATA SETS
You may also include larger sets of data such as sequence alignments, statistical analyses, detailed experimental descriptions, etc.

MANUSCRIPT COMPONENTS
The format of the manuscripts should include an abstract, an introduction, materials and methods, results and discussion. You may include additional abstracts in languages other than English.

CITATION FORMAT
Please note that journal names should be fully spelled out in the references.
