Submission and Organization of Manuscripts Submission: Journal of Biomedical Materials Research Part B: Applied Biomaterials is now receiving submitted manuscripts online at http://jbmr-wiley.manuscriptcentral.com.
Submit all new manuscripts online. Launch your web browser and go to http://jbmr-wiley.manuscriptcentral.com. Check for an existing user account. If you are submitting for the first time, and you do not find an existing account, create a new account. Follow all instructions.
Submit manuscript and all figures as one file if possible. You do not need to mail any paper copies of your manuscript at this time.
At the end of a successful submission, a confirmation screen with manuscript number will appear and you will receive an e-mail confirming that the manuscript has been received by the journal. If this does not happen, please check your submission and/or contact tech support at edsupport@wiley.com.
Upon Acceptance: Authors of manuscripts accepted for publication in the Journal will be asked, on acceptance, to mail to the Journal Office a printout of the accepted version of the manuscript along with required copyright and permissions forms and a disk(s) containing the corresponding manuscript file, figures, and tables. A copy of the Publication Agreement, executed and signed by the author, is also required at this time. Accepted manuscripts should be mailed to: Dr. Harold Alexander, Editor, Journal of Biomedical Materials Research Part B: Applied Biomaterials, Orthogen Corporation, 505 Morris Avenue, Suite 104, Springfield, NJ 07081, USA.
JBMR Part B has adopted a policy that requires authors to make a statement concerning potential conflict of interest relating to their submitted articles. The Editorial Board asks authors of original reports and reviews to disclose, at the time of submission: (1) any financial or employment arrangements they may have with a company whose product figures prominently in the submitted manuscript or with a company making a competitive product; and (2) any grants or contracts from a government agency, a nonprofit foundation, or a company supporting the preparation of the manuscript or the described research. This information will be available to the reviewers of the manuscript. If the article is accepted for publication, the editor will discuss with the authors the manner in which such information may be communicated to the reader.
At the time of submission, JBMR Part B asks authors to certify that all animals utilized in their research were cared for according to the policies and principles established by the Animal Welfare Act and the NIH Guide for Care and Use of Laboratory Animals.
Review Process: All original reports and reviews receive critical review by at least two reviewers with expertise in the major subject area of the paper. Reviewers may recommend "Acceptance as is," "Acceptance with modification," or "Rejection." If modification is required, the manuscript is returned to the author(s). The revised manuscript is then re-reviewed by the original reviewers, and even re-revised if necessary. Differences in opinion are resolved by submission either to a third reviewer or the Editor.
Organization and Style: Manuscripts must be typed double-spaced, with at least one-inch margins, on one side of the paper only. Original research and short reports should appear in the following order: title page (including authors and affiliations), abstract, keywords, introduction, materials and methods, results, discussion, acknowledgments, references, legends for tables and figures. Number pages consecutively starting with the title page as page 1. Abbreviations must conform to those listed in Council of Biology Editors' CBE Style Manual, 5th Edition.
When mentioning a material, chemical reagent, instrument, or other product, use the generic name only. If further identification (proprietary name, manufacturer's name and address) is absolutely required, list it in parentheses.
Title Page: List the full title of the paper and each author's full name (first name, middle initial(s), surname), department, institution, city, and state (and country if other than the United States). Indicate the name and address of the author to which proofs and reprint requests should be mailed.
Abstract and Keywords: Include an abstract of about 200 words maximum summarizing the aims, findings, and conclusions of the paper. Below the abstract, list five keywords or phrases that best characterize the subject matter of the manuscript.
References: Number references consecutively as they appear in the text. Material accepted for publication but not yet published may be listed in the References, but unpublished observations, personal communications, and material submitted for publication but not yet accepted should be cited parenthetically within the text (and not included among the numbered references). Style references entries using the Council of Biology Editors Style Manual, 5th Edition formats:
For journal articles: Alexander A, Green WS. Total hip replacements: A second look. J Soc Biomater 1989;45:345¨C366. For books/chapters: Ricci JL, Guichet J-M. Total hip replacement: A third look. Cindra AB, Franklin DE, editors. State of the art orthopaedics, vol 3, Hips. New York: Wiley; 1988:56¨C59. For abstracts: Davidson GRH. Total hip replacement: A fifth look. Trans ABCS 1987;22-341¨C345. For presentations: Goodenough T. Total hip replacement: A sixth look. Presented at the 3rd Annu Mtg Orthop Res Soc, Boston, December 5¨C7, 1989.
Illustrations: Three complete sets of numbered illustrations are required, submitted in a form suitable for reproduction. On the back of each illustration, indicate its figure number ("Figure 1," "Figure 2," etc.), and orientation with an arrow pointed to the top. Do not mark illustrations and photographs with author name(s) and/or affiliation(s). Photographs should be in the form of original glossy prints; line drawings, if possible, should be twice the size of the final reproduction (maximum final size is 12.5 x 20 cm, or approximately 5 x 8 inches). It is the author's responsibility to obtain written permission to reproduce materials which have appeared in another publication. Figure legends should be submitted on a separate sheet.
All color figures will be reproduced in full color in the online edition of the journal at no cost to authors. Authors are requested to pay the cost of reproducing color figures in print. Authors are encouraged to submit color illustrations that highlight the text and convey essential scientific information. For best reproduction, bright, clear colors should be used. Dark colors against a dark background do not reproduce well; please place your color images against a white background wherever possible. Please contact Brooke Insley at 201-748-8673 / binsley@wiley.com for further information.
A limited number of color figures that are of critical importance and that significantly enhance the presentation will be considered for publication at the publisher's expense. Color separations or transparencies (negative or positives) are optimal. Color slides are preferable to color prints. Any cropping of the color figure should be clearly indicated. Final decision on publication of color figures will be at the discretion of the editor.
Tables: Tables must be typed double-spaced on separate sheets. Number tables consecutively, starting with Table 1, and include a title for each.
Running Heads: Supply a short title of no more than 65 characters, including spaces and punctuations, to be used for running head copy.
Disk Submission Instructions
Please return your final, revised manuscript on disk as well as hard copy. The hard copy must match the disk.
The Journal strongly encourages authors to deliver the final, revised version of their accepted manuscripts (text, tables, and, if possible, illustrations) on disk. Given the near-universal use of computer word-processing for manuscript preparation, we anticipate that providing a disk will be convenient for you, and it carries the added advantages of maintaining the integrity of your keystrokes and expediting typesetting. Please return the disk submission slip below with your manuscript and labeled disk(s).
Guidelines for Electronic Submission
Text Storage medium. 3-1/2" high-density disk in IBM MS-DOS, Windows, or Macintosh format.
Software and format. Microsoft Word is preferred, although manuscripts prepared with any other microcomputer word processor are acceptable. Refrain from complex formatting; the Publisher will style your manuscript according to the Journal design specifications. Do not use desktop publishing software such as Aldus PageMaker or Quark XPress. If you prepared your manuscript with one of these programs, export the text to a word processing format. Please make sure your word processing program's "fast save" feature is turned off. Please do not deliver files that contain hidden text: for example, do not use your word processor's automated features to create footnotes or reference lists.
File names. Submit the text and tables of each manuscript as a single file. Name each file with your last name (up to eight letters). Text files should be given the three-letter extension that identifies the file format. Macintosh users should maintain the MS-DOS "eight dot three" file-naming convention.
Labels. Label all disks with your name, the file name, and the word processing program and version used.
Illustrations All print reproduction requires files for full color images to be in a CMYK color space. If possible, ICC or ColorSync profiles of your output device should accompany all digital image submissions.
Storage medium. Submit as separate files from text files, on separate disks or cartridges. If feasible, full color files should be submitted on separate disks from other image files. 3-1/2" high-density disks, CD, Iomega Zip, and 5 1/4" 44- or 88-MB SyQuest cartridges can be submitted. At authors' request, cartridges and disks will be returned after publication.
Software and format. All illustration files should be in TIFF or EPS (with preview) formats. Do not submit native application formats.
Resolution. Journal quality reproduction will require greyscale and color files at resolutions yielding approximately 300 ppi. Bitmapped line art should be submitted at resolutions yielding 600-1200 ppi. These resolutions refer to the output size of the file; if you anticipate that your images will be enlarged or reduced, resolutions should be adjusted accordingly.
File names. Illustration files should be given the 2- or 3-letter extension that identifies the file format used (i.e., .tif, .eps).
Labels. Label all disks and cartridges with your name, the file names, formats, and compression schemes (if any) used. Hard copy output must accompany all files.
